Clearly the implication is that White has outmaneuvered Black by putting themselves in check, thus psyching out the opponent into not quite taking their king and creating an easy opening for the king to take the bishop and escape.

Targi's probably my favorite 2p game. Thanks for the video review of an old game! You have effectively piqued my interest in the expansion. I read years ago that it was not essential since, well, it just added water. And probably making the Goods space not an auto-pick for the first player. You had a good point that it makes Targi a new experience due to the additional complexity.

Another great review. Gotta say I'm actually happy they called it Targi the expansion. I know its not the most glamorous name, but could you imagine buying just the expansion without it having the name expansion in it. Then needing to go buy another game or return the expansion just to try to find the base game. headaches and frustration cause a lot of people to give up on games. If like you said in the review it is a more simple and toned down euro game I could see this being recommended to newer players who want to try euro games out? and yes that last one is a question. I bring this up because I once got a Dominion expansion without owning the original game, only to have to wait for a week to get the base game because I missed the small box on the bottom saying "Not a complete game" plus the first edition of intrigue came with base components, second edition doesn't. The store clerk didnt know that they removed the base components in the second edition so ensured me that the game contained everything I needed. Honest mistake on everyone's part.... anyhow now that I have rambled for wayyyyy to long. TLDR: I like the name being Targi the expansion, its easy to understand.

I thought this game was too dry for me, at first-but after about five plays, I got really into it. Now, 13 plays in, my husband and I are very evenly matched and can bang this game out in about 40 minutes, so I actually get hankerings to play this game, and it just plain feels good to explore every time. I guess that’s another way it’s like chess; the more you play it (and with the same person, I’d argue), the more rewarding it is. In my opinion, this and Fox in the Forest are the two 2P games in my collection with the most staying power, for these reasons.

Oh weird... I was just watching The Dice Tower's review of this yesterday and checking it out to suggest to a non-gamer who is looking to play a 2-player game with her husband. I ended up suggesting some other ones (Lost Cities, 7 Wonders: Duel, Ticket to Ride: Nordic Countries), but this was close to making the list.

While I would love to see you guys review Warchest. I suspect the most chess like board game to be reviewed is Onitama.

Nice. Honestly though? Your review of Western Empires captivated me. That game sounds absolutely fantastic. Any more games of a similar vein you can recommend? Specifically elements like it being a longer game, group of people, multiple paths to victory, all playing at once, even the separation to the point where you might not realize what's been going on over the last hour on the other side of the board? Obviously if I want all of those at once I'll go grab WE, but I was curious of any similar games you would also recommend.
