    The oud player is the humble Palestinian musician Simon Shaheen, born in the village of Tarshiha in Palestine. He has many albums and thousands of soundtracks for international films such as "Sheltering Sky" and "Malcolm X" and a music for many documentaries, Arabic music with jazz, Western classical music and Latin American music. Musician Simon Shaheen, in addition to the oud, is violinists with the same professionalism and beauty. His first artistic appearance was at the age of four. Shaheen was considered as a unique musical school, so it is no surprise that Former US president Bill Clinton honored Simon Shaheen at the White House.

    According to some theories of the etymology it comes from Persian word "Setar"(which means 3 strings) or "Zither" from Egypt.

  • @alwizardus

    @alwizardus

    @@qatari84al-qahtani81 not exactly, the word "Guitar" comes from derivation of indian and persian lute called Sitar or Setar and Tar. And unlike oud, they have frets or bars to guide the sound of the strings.. Gui-tar may be short for guia del tar.. Guia in Spanish means guide. The word Citharrra comes from Greek and Roman times, but origin again is from Indian and Persian. Spanish guitar has a direct ancestry from the Arabic oud or Persian Barbat, and also Persian Sitar or Tar. All of them were brought to Cordoba, Spain, in the 9th century by a muscian called Ziryab, who was of Persian origin but born in Iraq. And the true pronounciation of the name is Zaryab, in Persian or Kurdish, which means "liquid gold" or of "wealth and richness". Does not mean "blackbird" as some writers claimed.

    39Thorns I love its deep sound. Underappreciated? In terms of playing on it in western-style music you are probably right. But hey, it's a Middle Eastern instrument so no wonder that is so. There are other instruments from that region (kanun, ney...) that are facing the same situation, but I don't find anything wrong in that. I guess this makes the whole world music more interesting. That way I can choose between Arab music, Hindustani Classical, Balkan, Scandinavian folk, African music or whatever. I have a choice not only because of different musical traditions but also because of different instruments used.

    its the music scale tonality that is definitely, Middle Eastern/ Oriental, in origin. the Guitar incorporates Steel components in the construction of the instrument, with the frets and eventually strings these instruments don't have frets and all the materials for these instruments are organic, wood and 'gut' strings (Catgut, literally made from the intestines of animals) its that Harmonic-Minor scale that has that Spanish middle eastern sound there is history there btw with spanish Al-Andalus (Muslim Spain) its world music Baroque music from Middle Ages europe into the Renissance has alot of middle eastern sounding stuff, especially with Bach, even into Mozart. Church music will alway relay back to Jerusalem and 'Israel" and Middle Eastern Cultures.

    not sure if you know or not, but the arab empire once was the epicenter of all cultural heritage spanning from spain, to africa, and the entire persian empire. the reason arab music sounds like spanish, is because spanish music is fundamentally, arabic music.

    No it isn't, if it was then why is it necessary to delineate between Arabic and Spanish music, moreover is Arabic music essentially Persian? The oud was inspired by a Persian instrument and music from there? Or is Turkish Music essentially Greek? The Turks took a lot of inspiration from the Greeks when making their music. They may have evolved from there but the music styles are inherently unique.

    @@danielk3919 You're wrong, dude. Persians aren't arabic, they're persians! They're totally different ethinicitys. And yes, spanish music derivates directly from arabian music, altough they have different aproach into the musical subjct, their base are the same, very different from the ocidental music aproach. Also, its impossible not to realize this kind of influence, if you have in mind that a large part of Europe undergoed arabic domination for, like spain, 600+ years. Hope i helped. @@rafaellima5429 I was making an example with the Oud being of Persian descent since OP said that European or Spanish music is essentially just Arabic music... My point is that you can make this derivative claim of any kind of music, I can trace Arabic music back to Ancient Greece and Persia. That's what I meant. Of course Persians aren't Arabs lol. This kind of comment where a person tries to say that one cultures music is actually from another is extremely stupid.

    انه سيمون شاهين. صاحب انقى ريشة على الاطلاق. انتقائه للاعواد مميز. مهارات عزفه اكثر من رائعة ولا يحاول ابداً اظهار عضلاته العزفية بالاكثار من التكنيك البغيض الدارج عند معظم عازفي العود في زمننا هذا. لم يتخلى ابداً عن الروح الشرقية الطربية التطريبية لانه عليها نشأ. عرفت من ايام تلمذتي عنده من اننا تشاركنا بعشق وتقدير عبد الوهاب. افضل عازف على الاطلاق سابقاً وحاضراً.

    I love his sound and his playing. He throws in the Flamenco pieces every once in awhile which fit perfectly. One time he started to bring in the Flamenco and the Flutist came in and broke it. That's ok though, it still sounded awesome. I purchased an Oud and started to learn but after a shoulder operation I couldn't play due to the pain. I still pick it up every once in awhile but mostly just look at it.... Great piece of music and great sound as well Thank You from Idaho, US

    +Malcolm Loveless The spaniards got their spanish typical sound from arabic influences (flamenco for example) before they kicked the fkkk out all of them. Many arabic influences remained in Spain, for instance the pronunciation of many words (like the "J" sound) and eventually they brought it all to us in South America.

It has such a beckoning manner you want to dance to it and be it. His instrument has no frets. So no way to know where you are on the neck. I'm grateful I'm not dealing with that unbelievable challenge while I study guitar. I would give up.
