"Poem" is the first song I ever heard from Taproot. This entire album is amazing. What stands out the most to me about Taproot is the vocals. I'm surprised you never mentioned the big, flawless harmonies. That's a signature Taproot thing and the thing I've loved the most about the band. I really like what the bassist plays in the chorus as well. And no, he doesn't scream more than this in most of their songs. The scream/growl thing he just really sprinkles on the songs here and there for "flavor."

Awesome, you don't see to many Taproot reactions on YT for some reason. I recommend checking out "Calling" it's a step up from this song musically and vocally. Plus it makes an excellent ring tone for an ex to remind you not to pick up.

Awesome song. The singer, Stephen Richards, also guest stars on Linkin Park's second album in arguably the best song on the album, a remix of Pushing Me Away.

I really liked Taproot in my late highschool years around 1999-2000. I saw them on 120 min on MTV. I emailed them after I got their address somehow and said I liked them and hope they get big. They sent me free a demo cassette with the song "Again & again" and a couple others on it, some bumper stickers and other stuff in a manilla envelope one day. Super cool.

Loved their first 2 albums.... very reality based and relatable for many. Sadly, Layne Staley, a very obvious influence of there's, was supposed to appear on a very chains style song, but passed away.

One thing you'll notice if you listen to more Taproot is Stephan uses that BREAK! line a lot in their music to designate the Breakdown. Almost like a trademark of his. It's almost a catchphrase with some Taproot fans.

It's about escapism. Using poetry as a third person letter to yourself. It's about breaking through the horrible and neglectful upbringing he was going through to break the cycle of that lifestyle.

It was neat to see when you realized the poem is the song itself. The house abandoned because it was burnt out (you also see scorch marks when the character steps out at the end) and the couple making out's bodies are covered in soot (not ink) with their sweat a la "In case of fire..."

Its interesting you brought up a few things but I am not sure you quite connected the dots the I think the artist was trying to convey. You mentioned "everyone's covered in ink" thinking it was in reference to the song being a poem and that the house looked abandoned. My interpretation is this. The person writing the poem in the paper in anger is him before he is able to move on. It is the poem that allows him to breathe and eventually move on because everyone and everything around him has been burned down by the people he had around him. Its not ink they are covered in. It is ash and the house is not just abandoned it is burned and its not until he is able to get this poem out that he is able to move out on his own.
