This is a good presentation by Cody. I do timber cruising. We measure tree diameters all the time, so there are Spencer tapes with the diameter measurements on the back. You may want this. (Always measure tree diameters 4.5' above the ground, for consistency.) We also measure tree heights all the time. We hook the end of the measuring tape in the tree bark, then walk out 66 feet, or for tall trees, 100 feet. The tape reels out while we walk out. Then we use a clinometer to measure the tree height. Tip: take some black electrical tape and wrap it around the yellow measuring tape at 66 feet. Just a layer or two. As you are walking out, let the tape slide lightly through your fingers. As foot # 66 slides out, you will feel it. So, if you wanted that measurement you will know it and stop there. These tapes do come in 50' and 75' as Cody said. But I always get the 100' filler. I go overboard to be prepared for things that come up. And besides, I do use the hundred foot distance regularly, which some guys might not. Anyway this is the best tape out there. I have had mine since the 1980s. Now my sister wants to learn these things, so I will show her this and some of Cody's other videos as teaching aids.

As a professional timber cruiser, there is an easier way to replace the tape. Remove the masking tape from the logging tape refill and place the refill in your front pant pocket with the tail of the tape sticking out. Secure the tail onto the reel stud like you demonstrated. Then, while applying slight pressure with the palm of your hand over the refill in your pocket, let go of the reel and allow it to wind in the refill from your pocket. The speed of the winding can be controlled by the pressure placed on the reel with your palm. Doing this prevents the tape from bird nesting. Tight hipster pants are ideal for this method because it requires no pressure from your hand.

Excellent video. I added two horse shoe nails to my logger's tape, one pointing each way. When I am tallying timber, I use the one side, and when I am measuring logs, I use the other side. The nails I used are small, Capewell RN 4.5, Product Number 10005. They leave about a 3/4 inch long point, which works fine for eastern hardwoods.

Good video ! I repair Spencer’s for local loggers here in NW Oregon . Just for information because at times I get tapes that are missing screws . The Replacements from Spencer are $$$$$ ! The sizes are 3-56x1/4” for attaching the tape to the spool, and 3-56x5/16” for the aluminum Spacers. . I bought a box of each from McMaster Carr . These screws should also be available at any good hardware store . One other thing I have learned about the nail , if you give the push portion a half twist in the vice , the nail will pull out easier and you are less likely to snap the end of the tape off. J

Wranglerstar, here's a couple of tips from a logger on how to get your tape fill on without it exploding into a tangled mess. First, remove one of the two pieces of tape to give yourself a little tail to hook onto your loggers tape screw while still containing it. Second, once your tape fill is attached, loosen the rim screws, hold the tape in your off hand with your index finger on the spool to keep it from spinning, wind some tension onto the spring and tighten one of the rim screws to hold it in place. Third, break the second piece of tape and put the entire tape fill in your shirt pocket (preferably a hickory shirt if you want to dress the part) this will contain the filler. Lastly, place your hand over your heart, holding the tape filler in your pocket gently, remove your finger from the spool and let the tape reel from your shirt pocket directly onto your loggers tape, wind more tension onto the spring when necessary. Hope this is helpfull

Here's a couple of tips for you when you're using your tape. First when you are changing the reel and don't want the tape to get all tangled up put it in your shirt pocket. Next when you are sawing logs and have your lengths picked out wrap the measurements with electrical tape so you can feel when you're at your measurement.

Hey Cody, I end up having to refill my tape probably every two months due to how hard we are on them at work. I’ve found that the easiest way for me to do the refill is start by getting the spring loaded and then just breaking the top of the first tab of masking tape before putting the tape on the screw. Then I’ll put a sharpie or a pen through the center of the new reel and hold it with both hands then let the tension in the housing reel the tape in without having to completely unroll the new reel. Kind of tough to explain but hope it helps

In addition to what I wrote before about the Spencer tape, I want to put it out there that these tapes come in: •Metric •Feet and inches •Feet and tenths •On the back of the tape may be the diameter of the tree. (In forestry and arboriculture I want this.) You won't find a better tape. And don't forget the horseshoe nail. I got a few extras.

I agree with the silicon spray. I do the same with my Spencer! Also was doing some height measurements one time and getting right back to the 30 foot mark and the nail came out, before I could grab the tape fumbling with my other equipment, it 'nailed' me right in the thigh! So yes, it will bite you if not careful:) Great video, thanks for showing how to do repairs at home, it costs to much to send them back unless it's really jacked up badly which is hard to do to a Spencer...:) 🇬🇷☮️
