Tantallon Castle - East Lothian fortress of the earls of Angus, the ‘Red Douglases’.

Tantallon Castle, Stronghold of William Douglas, 1st Earl of Douglas. One of the most formidable East Lothian fortifications. A castle attacked by Kings of Scotland, James the IV and V, and English invader, Oliver Cromwell, and later described at length by Sir Walter Scott in his 1808 epic poem Marmion. The castle is now run as an attraction by Historic Environment Scotland.

I think it is a disgrace that such historical monuments to our history are allowed to rot away like this when there are plenty of funds available through tourism to repair restore and rebuild these places in the interests of our heritage education and civilisation.

I agree but I'm betting that the castle will still look the same 300 hundred years from now ...... And with Iran getting Nukes who knows how long the world has anyway .

Too many castles and not enough people to look after them. I live near 6 I can think of all within 20 minutes drive from the one I literally can see out my window right now 😂

Conserve yes, but restore and repair? I'm not confident that it's a good idea. Once you do such things you can never go back to the original again. Think about early "archeologists" in the 1800's who did huge amounts of damage to ancient sites, even though at the time they were using the most scientifically advanced techniques available. Sites like Newgrange are theater for tourists.

@@Lord_Warden_of_the_Marches I do agree it has to be done properly like the Tower of London. Which generates more than enough money for it's own maintenance.

I am grateful for your castle videos because of the symmetry of the elements you include. You would think by now that others would catch on. Instead some still bypass the history in either voice over, captions, their video descriptions or even the description plaques they just walk by. Then there is,shaky cam, focus on themselves instead of at least doing just voice over while showing what they are talking about (pet peeve) and mostly terrible music. I love how many amateur videographers there are now covering history so many more than when I was doing it way back in the day but videos like yours show how easily its done when you have your audience in mind. I love that you created a Scottish castle series too. Clever guy/gal ??

Yes, it’s pretty hard to get a bad angle isn’t it. The whole setting is so dramatic.
