It really is.
We visited the castle years ago with my mother who grew up in Dumbarton. She hadn’t been back since she was a wee girl and had emigrated with her entire family to the states. This area was her playground and it was so special to share this time with her. She has since passed but memories of our visit to the castle will stay with us forever.🏴

I've been there many times. It's an amazing place to visit and deserves to be more famous. So much history in one place.

I totally agree with you. Seems to be a wee bit forgotten compared to other castles.

It is not so famous cuz the original builder of the wall, Emperor Antoninus Pious, has been condemned by the senators in Rome.
I live right next to it, very atmospheric place to visit

Always amazes me, how we Scots were our own worst enemy. But putting the infighting and diabolical double dealing aside.. Robert the Bruce might be a Scottish hero, but dont mention his name on the Isle of Man 😳. I lived on the IOM for 12 years or so, and as a Campell was deemed ok 😂. Still legal to shoot scotsmen below high water in the isle of man.. I was told. Mannan interests me though. Clackmannan, Slamannan. River Annan. Any connection ? Mannans mist on Isle of Man. Is Mannan celtic or Viking ? I know I could google it.. but I bet you know 👍😀

Manau, or Mannan, was a sea god who was worshipped throughout the Celtic world, so I would think it comes from that. There is another local legend at Clackmannan about Bruce and his glove being left at the then hamlet but I'd go with the sea god story as the Forth as much higher in days gone by.

@@scotlandshistory I was born in Airthdry castle.. brought up in tullibody and later falkirk.. and it seems I can never escape Bruce 😳. Strange thing is... I dont think I have ever known anyone with surname Bruce. Personally I mean.

I've known a few people with that surname but it's not really common.

And yup. I remember as a kid going up Dumyat with my uncle in the 70s. Similar to Dumbarton rock, at that time the legend was of a celtic fort with hunting teams dropping to the mudflats scavenging whales. We might be the last oral tradition generation really.. ☹️
its across from ma house but tbh idc lol
