    There is a big difference between wet cleaning and soaking, during a wet clean the cover of the comic is dampened on one side, if you feel the underside of the cover it will generally be dry to the touch. Afterwards a steam and a hot press is generally used, the air drying generally takes less then ten minutes. On the other hand when I soak a comic cover I absolutely let it dry in a cold press and that can sometimes take anywhere from 4 to 8 hours depending on the thickness of the paper, though I will generally let it stay in a cold press for over 24 hours.

    Paper fibers also want to weave together like fabric fibers generally in one dimension. When it air drys, it gets the chance to shrink/pull in one dimension and you get ripples and warping. The cold press and blotting works to help the paper to dry evenly and remain flat.

    Thanks for your question. The amount of water I initially added I did not calculate. I add just enough water to dissolve the powder. My bath tub is 5 gallons. I filled up a little lower than half way so the estimate is about two (2) gallons of water. The process is not an exact science so give or take some water is ok in my experience. Thanks again.

    Always educational. Out of curiosity, does the Remay paper have any wicking action to assist in the drying process, or is it all just natural evaporation from between the glass?

  • @jerrythejitterbugcomicbook4098

    @jerrythejitterbugcomicbook4098

    2 жыл бұрын

    The Reemay paper I don't believe has any wicking action (I looked up what wicking is Hahaha). The Reemay papers purpose is to protect the cover. The drying between the glass is out first blotting by the pressure of the glass and weights and then through evaporation. This is why I change the paper towels frequently. Every time they are changed the less wet they feel and the more dryer the cover looks and feels. The key is to let the document dry under pressure and naturally. Thanks for your question.

    Thank you for creating this tutorial, I found it very informative. If I am not mistaken methyl cellulose is only soluble in cold water, but I'm going by memory and may be wrong. I have a question for you in regards to #1 How long of a rinse do you provide, and #2 How long is your typical dry time under your cold press? Thank you in advance, and keep up the good work.

    Thank you for stopping by. Depending on the period of book the general rule is about ten to twenty minutes. When I dry my pages I do so until completely dry. Some times it can take up twenty four hours. It is very important to change the paper towels frequently as well as using reemay paper.

    Is there anyway to do this process without removing the cover and soaking it fully? Possibly using less water and making more of a paste with the chemicals. And then wiping it down with water and a makeup pad? I'm trying to clean a comic with a primarily white cover that has some shadowing around the edges. But would like to avoid disassembling the cover. Your thoughts?

  • @michaelmayrend313

    @michaelmayrend313

    2 жыл бұрын

    Hello Jason. It depends on how aggressive you need to get and what issue you are trying to solve with wet cleaning. With very light strokes, you can use a damp makeup pad with just water to remove surface dirt, then cold press to dry. Jerry is soaking to try to lessen browning from general acid effects in the paper, lessen or remove past water/liquid staining, and to reduce/neutralize the remaining acid in the paper. Always practice on multiple similar 50 cent/dollar bin books to learn what works for you.

    Thank you. I am uncertain. I have a few books at CGC now that were cleaned with this process. Anticipating the results hopefully shortly because CGC is quite fast in their turnover. 😉. My educated conservative prediction would maybe a conserved label. CGC guidelines state that cover cleaning and deacidification is allowed for a conserved grade provided the work is an “A-1” designation.

    Thanks Gary. Always a little concerned about the longer uploads because we are all busy with life and there is so much great content out there.

    This is an amazing technique. However anytime you are trying to do a restoration of a paper product and you are introducing chemicals into the equation, your primarily ingredient is water. That needs to be the purest form of water you can use. Using ordinary tap water is subjective at best. Why? Because each County City, state uses different methods to purify water. I believe in this instance using Distilled water may have been your best bet, using paper towels is good but a more lint fee solution like heavy duty shop towels might be a better solution. As far as your press is concerned, this may require a little more experimentation, possibly a slightly warmed sheet of glass? or maybe a small heating element? The weights are a cheap way to keep the pressure on but glass does flex and placing more weight in the center might be achieving an uneven weight distribution, but who knows it might be the ideal way to funnel the moisture out.

    Wow you provided a lot of information. It is greatly appreciated and I thank you for stopping by. Please take a look at more of my uploads and I am sure they will answer your questions and comments. In the past I used distilled water, but proved impractical because of the water volume I use. Also I have a state of the art whole house filtration system which helps the process. In relation to the paper towels they never come into contact with the paper I am working on, rather the Reemay paper that is over and under the comic. Finally my cold press is just the first step to a long procedure which is followed by heat pressing and then once again cold pressing. Thanks for stopping by! P.S. My glass plates don’t flex. They are over 1 inch thick.

    If you were to place the paper towels directly on the cover. I have the cover sandwiched between Reemay paper which prevents that. Thanks for stopping by.
