Taniwha ( Get in the water )
/!\ ( Edit ) /!\ I noted a lot of similar questions in the comments, so here’s some answers :
- You can find more about the story/context with the graphic bible I made for this project ( www.artstation.com/artwork/Za... ). I was not planning anything when I started this short, just animate something with a cool music... But I really enjoyed create these characters and work with them, so maybe I'll try to do more of it 😊
- I take inspiration from the New-Zealand/Maori water creature, the Taniwha. But it’s important to clarify that my goal was not to be representative of the original culture, I prefer create my own lore/story to not be too dependant of myths and disrespect them… ( but I invite you to be curious about the real stories and legends, I really enjoyed discover them ).
- If the artstyle remind you Wakfu, it’s because I worked on the season 4 as 2D animator and I wanted to experiment/applied the things I learned there ( and because I absolutely love this artsyle ^^ ).

EN : There you go !
It's been a loooooong time I've wanted to do a little animated project, and even if there are still things I could improve ( perfectionism, I won't fall into your trap this time ), I'm glad to finally publish this short ! I hope you'll like it 😊
I still have a lot to learn in Drawing and Animation, but if you're curious and have questions about these topics, don’t hesitate !
Be well, and see you on a next project ❤

Taniwha are often depicted with maori stylized carved features it's a siren style mythical creature that mostly inhabit rivers and lakes. There is a lot of diversity when it comes to modern interpretations of Taniwha but mainly they are a pretty unique mix of lizard/mermaid like features with a very unique head shape that often looks very human while also looking quite lizardlike or feline due to the artisic style of maori wood carving. They are genuinely quite creepy as they are often depicted as being very sentient and conversational, very charismatic while being intentionally malicious. They were somwehat used as a wives tale to warn children about bodies of water, often depicted as trying to tempt solitary children to join them in their underwater domain much in the same way that Pennywise talks to Georgie in the start of Stephen King's IT. Of course this is a very basic understanding of the Taniwha. My knowledge of them is just from tales I heard when I was growing up rather than dedicated study. Maori and pacific islander culture and folklore is facinating and I honestly appreciate that I got to grow up around it.

I think my favorite part was when she pulled out the knife and the water was blasted back. And the splash of water obscuring her transformation was so cool! 0:38 Also, how the camera looks down on the man and pulls backwards and upwards, then cuts to looking up at her showing how she has grown while her wound closes almost instantly. Really showing off her power, and how much he fucked up, timed perfectly with the crescendo of the song. Just fantastic! 0:42

This caught me off guard as a Kiwi, of course I noticed the word taniwha and was curious if this had to do with our Māori legends. It's funny because years ago it felt like the rest of the world didn't know we existed but now I witness more and more people becoming interested in our culture and country. I am glad you found inspiration in our legends. It's fun to see the stories I grew up with impact your artwork. Beautiful animation! you animated the waves so well and really captured the movement.

@@cam-art I can relate. I am also an artist but I specialize more in concept art rather than animation. And I've always adored myths especially Celtic stories, it's cool there are other artists out there that draw from such inspirations as well. Keep up the incredible work I am excited to see where your ideas take you. Additional note: If you would like to read about more Māori legends my two favorites are Ngake and Whātaitai the taniwha of Wellington Harbour, and How Māui brought fire to the world.
The chills I got as the water circling around her stopping in it’s place before she transformed.

Yo that's so cool, i immediately got the wakfu vibes and congrats on working on season 4.
Fantastic work on this! It's amazing to see the OG version of this song is about Odysseus and Poseidon and you've transformed Clae's cover into a full story. The latter is an artist who focuses her work on telling the stories of powerful women, so I really love how the heart of that still beats in your take on this song. Your story bible was a real treat to read, so thank you for sharing it! (tl;dr: It's just me gushing about this animation XD so good!!) The look on Mart's face is amazing. You can tell this is the moment he failed to understand the legend properly, that he thinks *this* is the moment where he was successful in his efforts to "control the sea". You can feel his desperation here to "win". The idea of control and victory plays bitterly brilliantly in discussions of women in abusive situations or assault of some nature often being victims of a man they once trusted or at least knew rather than a total stranger. I love that Tani backs away and looks at the knife in her chest. I think the only thing I'd note here is their proximity. It looks like he's just stabbed her but her single step back is already at a large distance. I'd suggest having Mart's hair move in the first few frames to suggest he's stepped back as well and to have Tani's braid have more movement to it to suggest the force knocking her further back. The two shot frame where they are both full-bodied is lovely 0:02. I love how the sky is blue and mostly clear on Mart's side and violet and cloudy on Tani's side. It suggests she's the storm and he's the calm. There's some really fun ways light gets played with in Nimora that subverts viewer expectations- allowing the bad guys to be adored in white and light which appeals to the narrative of the story being that people don't realize the good guys are the ones in the shadows. That same vibe get reflected here with Tani and Mart. One expects the "monster" to be Tani but she is really a woman who would've been Mart's victim if not for her own power. Something else to note, purple in New Zealand was the color of the Suffrage 125 logo and has a deep personal connection to women being granted the same political rights as men. I'm not sure if this was an intentional color theory choice on your part, but it really came out stunning. The fact the sky gets swallowed up by Tani's background color that's also reflected in the sea? It would've been so easy to just make it all blue, but you really went the extra mile here and it shows
