I used to drive for a construction supply company. Got into movies even deeper around that time. Came across this obscure masterpiece. I was floored. Best movie I've seen. My truck was the worst one in the fleet, old, decrepit, and smoked like a chimney. Every morning when I first put it in gear this started playing in my head...

My brother Dan and I in the late '70s had a chance to salvage an abandoned railroad track. We had both seen this movie. With the big flatbed truck, I had rented, we drove the gravel path, littered with railroad ties both rotten and some well preserved. I had a job that required 20 or so good railroad ties for landscaping a driveway. There were 100's to pick through. We drove the path recreating the scene from this movie. Danny walked in front of the truck guiding me around opticals and picking out the good ties. At times I would then get out of the truck to help load those ties. My brother was a superman of a guy, he could lift a tie from the bed of loose gravel onto his shoulder and throw it in the truck. He was 22 and as strong as an ox. We collected 60 or so ties. Sold them to a landscaper. We sweated like pigs, laughed as we joked about hauling nitro to put out the oil fire. "watch that bump, we could have blown ourselves to smithereens" Dan and I made good money that day, he was proud of me for putting that opportunity together for us. I was proud too that he was my brother and such a superman. NYE 2021 his heart gave out. We will always have these stories and the Tangerine Dreams.

@@smotnick Friedkin was a badass but Exorcist was and will always be, to me at least, silly. French Connection is a great movie sure but somehow Sorcerer is that rare *perfect* movie. Here in the real world Satan doesn’t possess 13 year old girls to projectile vomit pea soup and rotate their heads 360 degrees. But we have an abundance of bad men with guns causing trouble. To Live And Die In LA was also great.
@smotnick
3 жыл бұрын
@@TheRealCaptainFreedom "The Exorcist," which was recently named in a British survey as the best or greatest horror film of all, is far from silly. After seeing it four times over a period of forty years, I would say that once you know where the jump-scares come, it becomes less effective. That said, the cinematography (Billy Williams shooting in Iraq and Owen Roizman in the US), is nothing less than brilliant. The performances are above average--especially Burstyn, the late von Sydow and Miller (a theater vet in his first film role). Blatty's dialogue, like I said, is smart and even touches on philosophical themes, UNLIKE most of today's horror. Friedkin's choice of music is not nothing short of genius -- and far more effective than the classicla music in 2001, because it never takes over what's on the screen.. As a cinephile, I would say "Connection," "The Exorcist" and "Sorcerer" are his three best. "The French Connection," "Crusing," and "To Live and Die in L.A." could comprise an unofficial cop trilogy.

Traveling across Japan with my brother, so tired we could hardly walk so we stepped into a matinee and sat down surrounded by locals. What came next was the best film experience of my life. Read the original "Wages of Fear" and the movie novelization, and played the crap out of the soundtrack LP (with cassette version to enjoy on the road). Then the movie fell off the edge of the Earth!

@smotnick

Read the original "Wages of Fear" and the movie novelization, and played the crap out of the soundtrack LP (with cassette version to enjoy on the road). Then the movie fell off the edge of the Earth!
