Tamiya TT02 vs TT01 Comparison - Which is Best? Pros & Cons!

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

Hi Guys! Well - My good friend Rob has just finished his Tamiya TT-01 chassis build, and we thought it would be interesting to compare it to my recent TT-02 chassis - the TT-02D. We enjoyed a good chat about the similarities and differences between the two chassis - seems they are more alike than different. But there are a few important differences, I hope you enjoy seeing and hearing what out opinions are. Whatever we think, both Tamiya chassis are awesome!
Many thanks to my friend, Rob, for filming this and adding his excellent knowledge to the commentary. Please take a minute to visit his fantastic channel here: / @robbrennanrc

    Such a great comparison. You know I love this 🙂 Some surprises there too. I would have expected the TT-02 to do a lot better compared to the TT-01, just like a TT-02(B) compared to a DF-02. Will have to go back and double check the play in the steering and suspension now. But great job both of you. I think you covered it all. Excellent!

    Hello Mikael, I hope this message finds you well. Really glad you enjoyed this little waffle between friends! Yes, the TT01 is a well designed kit, and especially in this "E" version that has the chassis brace and the metal pivots in the steering. I think both cars are excellent, but the TT02 will probably just get my vote after a little fine tuning and little upgrades. It will be fun to see how they perform together on the road, I am looking forward to that. All the best to you my friend! :-)

    This was a well-reasoned and balanced comparison. I think I´d be seduced by the TT01 if I wanted a pure road car, for the slop-free suspension and steering setup. I do like the TT02´s versatility, though, as well as the user-friendly front end design.

    Thanks very much Del. Well, we had fun chatting about the 2 cars anyway! With any video like this, in the Tamiya community, it's bound to spark off a few debates, as there are a lot of people out there passionate about their choices! Yes, the TT01 looks to me to be a good on-road choice, but others are disagreeing! However, I stand by my comments in the video, from an engineering standpoint, the TT01 does have some plus points. You can't go far wrong with a Tamiya! All the best, mate, hope your weekend is going well. :))

    I am almost finished building my first TT02 kit. I love it. I already ordered another! One thing Tamiya can definitely improve on is screws labeling. I nearly wrecked the differentials by screwing in slightly screws than necessary, piercing the diff case and interfering with the gears. The screws are so small and similar, but a simple mistaking the screw type can almost ruin the build.

  • @MarkBryanRC

    @MarkBryanRC

    4 жыл бұрын

    Yes, they sure are great kits! I agree, Tamiya are not specific enough about the instructions regarding some of the screws, especially ones that are very similar. It took me a few builds to work it out, as it is not stated anywhere, but where screws are similar, they are made of different colours, either bright silver or a dark grey. The parts are shown to the left of each build step in the manual, and if you look, you can see where some of the screws in the diagram are shaded. If you place the correct screw over the diagram, it should match exactly in size and colour. Glad you rescued the diffs! All the best from Mark... :)

  • @taimaishu-nao1922

    @taimaishu-nao1922

    2 жыл бұрын

    Yeah, I wrecked the diff case on my RWD drift converted chassis too. The long bumper screws like you’ve mentioned are 3x13mm and are actually too long to fit inside the hole it was made to slot into, partly because the bumper takes up some of that length. I screwed it all the way in while waiting for funds to get some sanding stones and I went too far and locked the diff up. The good thing is that I didn’t completely damage the ring gear. Yeah, a bit of a learning experience but the good thing is that I can always get a new bathtub if I need it, though let’s face it: the amount of modification required to fit the Yeah Racing drift conversion isn’t worth it. Besides, I could always patch the holes with a bit of Tamiya diff putty so it’s not a total loss.

    I have a couple of both 01 and 02, and I'm positive that you can increase the 01's ground clearance by nibbling a few millimeters off the B6 parts, front and rear. Then ofcourse you want to use some taller dampers with softer springs. It has potential enough for a decent off-roader.

    Hi Mark (and Rob). Well that was wonderfully nerdy viewing for a Friday afternoon with a beer! Very useful actually as I have never owned a TT-01 although I did overhaul one for a friend a while back. I did notice the low ground clearance and really that makes it no good for me. I have got a couple of road cars but they don't get out much due to lack of very flat surfaces around. The TT-02 with rally suspension however is high enough to run on short grass as you know so a lot more versatile. The TT-02 does have those issues of play in the suspension and steering like you say but I think if you are just messing about off roading then it's not so much of an issue. I guess for on road racing you need a better set-up but I think people doing that aren't really using cheap Tamiyas. Anyway, my weekend has got off to a good start as I've received half of an eBay purchase I made which was a built Sand Scorcher and Wild Willy 2. I've got the Wild Willy which looks great but the Sand Scorcher is the main thing I'm looking forward to. It's got alu wheels and front bumper and looks lovely in the pics. Hopefully it will show up soon. Other than that haven't got much planned this weekend other than having a few beers and the Strictly final tomorrow. Hope you have a good one planned matey 😀

    Hello Pete! Glad you liked this bit of nerdyness! Rob and me in full nerdy flow! I think the TT02 is the one for me, too, as you know that I (like you) enjoy a little off-road action! Gotta say though mate, when you get rid of some of that sloppiness, like with the Type-S or XV-01 setups, you really can tell the difference (not that it makes us better drivers though!) As you say, blasting around a wide open space it makes no odds, but on our little track or on those rally tests we did around cones and obstacles, it's amazing at how much more accurate you can be. Anyway, sounds like you got a couple of good reasons to listen for the doorbell! Ohh that Scorcher sounds nice! Enjoy beer, strictly and RC in equal proportion this weekend - I have a quiet one planned, trying to get over this unwanted second helping of man flu I picked up at school again - could you hear it in the video? All the best mate! :))

  • @PeteWylieRC

    @PeteWylieRC

    @@MarkBryanRC ah that's very sad about the man flu 😩 I guess that you can't really avoid all the germs at school. Hope you are better soon. Anyway it's a good point you make about actually doing a circuit with a rally car as it's not something I've tried. We tend to just blast around the place so it doesn't matter how sloppy the steering is. We really ought to try making a course. I do try to weave around the little pegs on the golf tee area but that's about it. Anyway the Sand Scorcher arrived and it looks great. Few bits of slightly wobbly painting but the lovely metal wheels and bumper make up for that. I'm going to do a little video about the new purchases soon. Also I have the second part of the video from last week to edit which is the Lunchboxes. Anyway enjoy the rest of the weekend as much as you can with your man flu. I built a TT01 chassis about 6+ years ago, and just finished a TT02 this morning (both stock,, no upgrades). I found both the be extremely easy to build, but found the TT02 to be super easy. The plastic bearings though (BB2 vs BB3) are so difficult to tell the difference though and had to do rework to swap bearings, but aside from that, the TT02 was a fun build. It's all plastic, so hopefully it holds up well, but I mainly build shelf queens and run them non-competitively , so i think they will be okay long term.

  • @MarkBryanRC

    @MarkBryanRC

    Hi Mike. I agree with your comments, the TT02 is a little easier to build and those bearings are so easy to mix up, I've done it many times! I have a 7 year old TT02 that has been used tons of times and I only ever broke one part, and that was after hitting a tree at full speed! Great chassis and very strong. Have fun!

    Great comparison! I'm a bit late seeing this but it told me everything I needed to know 👍. You mentioned the tt-01 doesn't have an off road body. I've found this version which is the Subaru Impreza WRX 2004 (TT-01E) 47372 kit. Also with the TT-01E in the description it says it has improved steering components and TA-05 steering posts. Even though it's an older chassis it seems to have some benefits over the newer TT-02. I think I'll get one and convert to rally spec. 😁

    Believe it or not, some upgrades for the TT-02 are shared with the TA, TB, TG and even M chassis! I wouldn’t say the TT-01 is better but as Mark pointed out, it’s more purpose-built whereas the TT-02 tries to be as versatile as possible.

    Hi Ken - gotta say the best is probably the XV-01 for rallying, a bit expensive though, the TT-02 Type S is a close second (NOT the standard TT-02) The Xv-01 comes with a body, but yes, you need a body for the Type-S. The kits usually all come with a motor and ESC, but not a receiver or servo. Hope you get one soon my friend! :-)

    @@MarkBryanRC hi mate and thanks for the reply, I do like the TT01 chassis but as you guys mentioned it's only good for a smooth flat surface, those vent holes with help cooling and weight but yes no good for gravel and especially sand 😬 Definitely worth doing the steering upgrades on the TT-02 the kit comes with ball race bearings like on the TT01 but is still only screwed into the plastic chassis post for those 2 inner steering arms, much better response/control, on the top parts to tighten down more like Rod mentioned "too tight and they won't move" on mine I've sanded them down slightly to get that better fitting/tightness, I've done the same on my alloy set too, My own made TT02 chassis strut brace come from me seeing a TT01 in person, now I'm not sure if it does the job intended but it does looks great 👌😉🚗💨

    I want to bash a bit, but keep the option open to race in the Tamiya cup in the future. Seems like the TT-01E is the best pick. TT-02S and SR are not allowed, and going by this vid the steering of the TT-02 doesn't convince me. And I don't want to spend too much on upgrades like full alu steering et cetera. Does the TT-02R have the same sloppy steering?

    EXCELLENT Comparison Boys!! I was looking forward to THIS! 😊 From what I've seen, the TT02 was designed to be more versatile. You've shown that. The TT01 Suspension looks far superior, tight and more efficient. From my experience (on the Armchair anyway😜), you COULD trim those plastic bits under the Control Arms - and fit Yeah Racing 65mm Dampers - to get 18-20mm of ground clearance. Should you want to enter it in the Rallye Competition!! 😊 Also, no reason why you couldn't Cement a THIN sheet of Plastic, Inside the tub, closing those holes... (I've seen the "LED Wheel" do all of that on his). Funny, those holes are there, because the TT01 is SO old a design, that the Batry Tray was designed to use NiCd Racing Packs!! 😳 Anyone remember THOSE? The vents under the Motor was because the Motors then (9T triple, 12T double and such) ran HOT🔥!! Really hot. That period of time was my heyday of Semi Pro Racing for Team Associated.... You guys know how OLD I am!! One question.... If you look side by side at them, the TT02 has holes, unused at each end of the Propshaft. It APPEARS that the Chassis Brace from the TT01 SHOULD be able to be fitted there! It also appears that the metal posts and Ball Raced Steering Arms from the TT01 SHOULD be able to be fitted on the TT02, with minor modifications... *I'd be willing to try that!!* 😉 EXCELLENT content as always Mates!!! 👍👍 Carmine ✈🚂🚙🎄🎅

Good idea about the TT01 steering parts, I will see if they fit the TT02 at some point when I get the time. Thanks for always leaving a constructive, interesting and POSITIVE comment my mate! Depends on what you plan to do. If you’re unsure, best to get the bog standard kit and slowly upgrade over time. However though… Mark is right. If your aim is to have “THE BEST”, in which case I second getting the Type S chassis. The biggest differences between the two are massive and I recommend doing your research before putting any money down for one. I will say though that hop-up parts for the TT-01 and TT-01E chassis are getting really scarce, even through the aftermarket. It’s not a very old chassis (first sold in 2003) but the support for the chassis isn’t quite as good as the TT-02. Whatever you decide, it’ll likely be awesome. Cheers.

    The center drive shaft is more solid in the tt-02 i think, by far. Also the TT-01 needs modification to take lipo bricks, since the battery compartment is shaped for stick & side by side. The better component cooling in the TT-01 might be an advantage when running onroad competitions. Also the front and rear crash protection in the tt-01 seems to be energy absorbing by deforming around that hole.... probably better crash resistance than the 02. I would be intrested in how much the weight diffrence is and how the diffrence in stiffness is?

    Hi Nick - yeah, the TT02 shocks will fit the TT01 (55mm eye-to-eye length). I'd only increase the travel if I wanted to run off road, gravel and dirt, etc. As for the spur gear, I think the plastic is fine, it tends to give the pinion gear an easier time and reduces wear. That's my opinion, for what it's worth! All the best from Mark...

    Hi guys, I just purchased the E version of the 01. I would like a small rundown if possible, please of which parts you feel are the weakest. I purchased a metal shaft and the cups at either end, I purchased the shock towers front and back which are identical, I also purchased the uprights both front and rear. Obviously oil dampers and the aluminum motor mount. . They sell an aluminum main gear and I was wondering should that be purchased. I'm staying away from purchasing the upper and lower control arms front and rear because I've noticed that during a car accident or a crash all of the energy is directed towards the mounting points and or the gear boxes and or chassis and usually it's a more horrific crash than if you just had the regular plastic arms and they would bend and give.

    Hi there! Well, after reading your list of modifications I have to say I think you have been very wise and have made all the best upgrades already! We have not had any issues or breakages of the standard kit parts, but you have upgraded the parts under most stress. I think the stock drivetrain, including the main gear, is very strong and doesn't need to be replaced (except for the propshaft that you have already upgraded). Have fun with your TT01E!!!! Cheers!

    As a racer I would not put any aluminium arms or hubs on the TT01/2. Not worth it. The plastic is lighter and cheap to replace and if you have a crash it generally flexes or breaks. Aluminium bends - sometimes not enough to notice it - and can screw up the handling. Also, once the anodising gets scuffed it looks terrible. For a shelf queen or a drift car where looks are apparently important alloy is fine. It also has a place on high end chassis too but that is generally much higher quality alloy.

    Hi, I think a 13.5T brushless is the ideal motor for this chassis, it's much faster than stock but won't rip the bevel gears apart! Plus much longer run times. Well , interesting to compare those 2 classic chassis and thank you for the video 👍 BUT you forgot a few aspects : No upper plate on tt02 but it doesnt mean tt01 is stiffer because tt02 chassis is thicker , with no openings , and made of better plastic as mentioned , + lower center of gravity Much better accessibility to differentials on tt02 , ok More important , you get much more gearing ratio options on tt02 with optionnal spur gear , whereas it s limited on tt01 Another big difference you ve forgotten is the differentials are metal on tt01, and reinforced plastic on tt02. People often think metal is better , wich is not true . plastic is lighter and gives a more efficient and less noisy transmission. And the soft metal gears produce abrasive powder with time wear. Tamiya plastic gears are bullet proof. You ll quick need to upgrade the center plastic driveshaft of tt01 to metal because it bends too much . On tt02 it s shorter , thicker and stronger . no need to upgrade if you keep reasonable with motorisation. Tt02 is a more MODERN chassis . EVERYTHING is better than tt01. Accessibility , Tuning , Transmission efficiency , Versatility rally / off road with no need to dremel your chassis like on tt01.. I got my tt02S for 99 bucks on Tamico special offer. included bearings , cva shocks , metal outdrives , improved front drive train , etc ... even decent tires and torque tuned motor . Just need a body and esc to start racing . Impossible to beat for the price . ( and far better than all the cheap chinese crap kits 😉 ) Your slop in the tt02 steering isn t normal to me, and in the A arms, just need little shim . I own both chassis in many versions ( tt01e , tt01d , tt02 , tt02S ) I love my tt01 , and sorry to disagree with lots of comments here, but make people think tt01 is better than tt02 is just NON SENSE or lack of knowledge .

    Well, Praxitèle Nicolas, I want to thank you very much for your detailed and informative comment, I appreciate you taking the time to write such a helpful message, it is fantastic to debate about our love of RC cars. It is very difficult to cover every aspect of each chassis in a short video and we were trying to outline the basic pros and cons of each kit. I do agree that the TT02 bathtub is thicker and stiffer, and said that was why Tamiya added the brace to the TT01, in an attempt to stiffen it up. As for the diffs, we have never had a problem with the metal gears in years of running Tamiya RC's, but I agree the plastic gears are quieter. Saying that, I have had problems with diffs in both my TT02B buggies - but they have got upgraded motors! Thanks for the heads-up on the TT01 propshaft (we haven't run the TT01 yet) so will keep an eye on that for problems. You got a fantastic deal from Tamico, the hop-ups you got included for the price is amazing! I think there is an issue with the slop on the steering as you mention on my TT02 and I'm looking into how to sort that out, other people have commented about theirs being tighter also. We will be comparing how the 2 chassis run and will be making a video about that. I will try to incorporate some of your comments into that when we make it. I still think that, as I said in the video, from a design perspective, the TT01 does have some good points. But in my conclusion, I didn't say it was better than the TT02, both chassis are good and if you are purely after an on-road car, you would not be throwing your money away if you spent it on a TT01 kit. If you want a little off-road action, it's a no brainer, the TT02 would always be my choice! Thanks again for your input - best regards, Mark...

    TT02 can be fitted with TRF suspension arms. TRF arms are much longer than regular TT02 suspension arm but the wheel base remains the same. longer arms mean the movement of wheels are more directly under control of arm geometry. stock TT02 has shorter suspension arm but same whhel base, that means the wheels are just off-set from the control pivot of the arm. TT01 is a onroad car design, the suspension is even limited in a small stroke, this bottom of the platform is flat and wide, in deep truning the edge of the platform just touches the ground, see TT02 does not as it has a v-shape platform

    Good morning, congratulations for the reviews, very exhaustive, but I wanted to ask you for advice, in your opinion better to take a TT-01 E frame, at 70 euros shipped and already assembled, or a TT-02 D to assemble at 150 euros shipped, in the sense, apart from the price the tt-o2 d and much better as construction and performance? Thank you.

    Hello and thank you for your comment and question. It really depends on if you would rather build the kit or not. The plus point for the TT02D is that compared to the TT01, it comes with metal bearings, oil shocks, a Sport Tuned motor and alloy heatsink. These cost a fair bit when you add them together, and give a good performance advantage. Saying that, the TT01 is so cheap it's hard to ignore at that price and is also a good chassis. If you can get the extras that the TT02 comes with for less than 80 euros, it's the one to go for! Best regards from Mark...

    to me ...the front suspension of TT01E is better...I like both....but TT01 is more stable on strigh runs...( the steering hack)
