Tamiya Super Sabre Restoration Turns Into a Re-Release Build

Ойын-сауық

#dustyfingersrc #rccars #vintagerc
I make video's of vintage RC's from the golden era & in this video I restored a 1987 Tamiya Super Sabre using re-released HotShot parts & show the many differences when compared to the originals.
I include backstory to the Tamiya Hotshot family of buggies which all share the same chassis and gearboxes.
The various Hop-Ups and re-release part numbers are listed throughout the video. Fortunately, Penguin Custom Body Shells make a reproduction body shell and I picked up some decals from eBay but the quality caused me some issues.
Be part of the Thumbs Up Support Squad if you like the video and I hope to see you in the comments.

The video production is as high end as the resto-mod build. Was never a fan of the Super Sabre until now. Your knowledge and attention to detail is second to none - fantastic work again mate, Tamiya have to bring this back now!

Thanks for that comment. I totally get it too cause back in the day the Boomerang had been out then this came along and wasn't really any different other than red parts and the body shell. Don't think it sold as well. My mate had one and I just really liked it. I think I like the Kyosho Turbo Optima too for the same sort of futuristic body style. If the idea for my custom shell works I think it might be the ultimate look and you could love it more. Going to take some time and dedication of hours though. Not looking forward to some of the masking but I hope it works. Did you like the black bit at the back of this shell? I think that works for me.

Well, Damian, I for one am mightily impressed! Awesome work to bring this buggy back to life! Your attention to detail is laudable in both the build of the car and the editing of this video. I was with you all the way, especially feeling your pain about those decals! I've had similar experiences with reproduction sticker sets, nothing touches the quality of the original Tamiya sets. Hope you can get it sorted because this creation deserves to look it's best! Hats off you you my friend! 😎👌👍

Mark, really appreciate that comment. I struggle with OCD vs. my skill level but those decals are a big let down as the colours seem good. Think I need the MCI decals. They are apparently thicker than Tamiya ones but still work well and nothing like these I picked up. The ones I have seen as thick as a credit card lol

Oh... I almost cried when Andy said no... And then I almost cried from happiness, ha ha! What a cool video, and an awesome result in the end! Of course I would love to see if you do another version also, that'll be great! Funny, I have just been cutting lots of holes in lexan bodies, I recognised your frustration with it. After I did 8 of them (2 bodies), I realised it was easiest with score and snap, not drill at all, and just a minimal bit of sanding needed... And the video, that is so well produced, Damian! Your voiceover has great authority and it fits so nice to the clips. You said it took you some while to get done, well worth the effort, buddy!

Yeah, Andy got me, his actual words where, no I won't sell them to you so as.I was reading it I was like oh OK and he went in to say he had been gifted so much that he wanted to put something back out. He wouldn't even let me cover the postage. Really nice thing to do and for the Super Sabre it really completed it. The wheels are really nice and over the moon with them. Not looking forward to cutting out the second shell tbh but I think it will be really cool. I sketched it out like a 3yr old and even then it was cool lol. Thanks for taking the time for such a great comment, truly appreciated 👍🏻

What an amazing journey, and so informative. The results are out of this world with classic sci-fi vibes for me. Kid's school glue stick works well on reluctant stickers, but I dont know how it holds up long term (fine for a year or two) and I wouldnt expect it to hold up to dusty and dirty driving. Good thing it's very non-destructive.

Wow what an epic production on the video and this restoration/re-release. Love all the little bits you put in your vids. Looks like you really put some thought and effort into this build. Looks epic. With the stickers I have only ever used super glue on the end of a paper clip to sort that issue. You need to be very careful not to get glue all over the body like you say. You only need a little bit and then to be able to hold the sticker down without gluing your finger to the body! Good luck mate 😁

  • @DustyFingersRC

Thanks Pete, you know what, I think I will make things worse with Super Glue, I see myself getting it on the shell and not just behind the stickers. They are so think and the adhesive is a bit crap that when you lift or handle the buggy and catch the edge of a sticker you pull it up. I think I will end up trying MCI decals in the end, just trying to get some money coming in at the moment. Appreciate the comment, took me a while to make but I learned a lot making it.

Appreciate you watching. I think the only part which is a problem to get is the shock tower. Someone was making and selling carbon fibre ones in eBay. If you search for it and it doesn't come up, Google it and the ended auction turns up and you can drop him a line as he makes them to order. Yeah, might get the MCI decals, people tell me they won't lift so should do the job. I have had them taped down with masking tape to try and train them to stay stuck lol. Thing is, they are that thick that you can end up lifting them when handling the buggy. Thanks again and nice to see a Sabre fan in the comments, first proper RC too 👍🏻

I've tried all the ebay decals and they suck. Correct, they are too thick, poorly printed, garbage colors and the lift before the project is even done. The best repro decals I've used are MCI. I stick with them only. You did a nice job, glad to see a pistol grip radio I know you English guys like those 2 stick AM jobs haha

Great comment! Appreciated. The only decals I have found which are good have been sponsor decals by screenprintdigital. Now an official re-release has been announced I will wait to get those I think. Otherwise, MCI would be the first choice for sure, I actually used them for vintage motor decals and have been 👍🏻 Re transmitters, yeah sticks did seem to be more popular in the U.K. and maybe the trend changed with all the RTR releases which came with triggers. The old school Tamiya guys still found or find it hard to let go, reliving our youth, capturing the same feeling we had as kids being the deciding factor. Couple reasons I switched over. My son when he was 5 couldn't use the big bulky stick TRX so I bought one for him and after trying it for a few minutes I liked it. Now I wouldn't go back as I can use one hand to drive and the other to film. 👍🏻
