Tamiya Lunchbox Painting Guide

Ойын-сауық

I make video's of RC cars from the Golden era.
This painting guide shows the 6 steps I take to paint a plastic hard body shell. it includes preparation of the surface, what grades of sand paper to use, how to make the paint more resilient, how to get an even coat of paint, how to paint the smaller details on the body shell and finally, applying lacquer to complete the paintwork.
I also give advice on decals and when to apply them so you don't ruin your project.
For this demonstration I am using matt spray paint and lacquer as in my experience it is the easiest way to get started.
A hot sunny day is the best time to spray paint as the paint disperses better from the can if it is warm. just don't let the aerosol get too hot by leaving it in direct heat.

    Great video fella, very comprehensive. 👌 Done many lunchies over the years, like you say- such a great canvass to go to town on......the more effort you put in, the better the result. Of course the only downside being the lunchbox spends more time on its roof than on its wheels..... nothing worse than flipping it over on the first bend after putting so many hours into finishing the shell! 🤣 👍 👍 👍 👍

    Thanks for the feedback. One thing I have learned over the years is to not get too excited and drive it on the road and wait till you get to loose dirt. Less harsh if it rolls over. The road can take chunks out of the hard body. Would like to see how it drives with a lexan shell one day.

    Great tip on using a paint pen, I've recently painted a lunchbox and found doing round the windscreen was the hardest part! Also wish I'd bough more paint - I used TS-64 dark mica blue and 2 cans was only juuust enough on top of the tamiya grey primer. Have now read that the mica colours are fairly transparent.

    I did a lot of research before I did my first hard body after returning to the hobby. This guide is the result and hopefully clear and concise to help someone like yourself. Gloss paint is a bit harder to do imo and the final stage has 2 options regards the lacquer. You can apply it like I did in this video, when the paint is dry but not fully cured or, you can lightly sand the paint with a high grit of at least 2500 I would say. It feels strange removing the shine of the paint but after you add the lacquer the shine comes back. That stage made me nervous the first time lol

  • @rivierarc

    @@DustyFingersRC Unsure which to 'practice' on... lol.. I definitely want to take my time and go the gloss route to begin with. Then there is the lacquer then decals, or decals then lacquer options too... I think it'll be late summer when I do my first, possibly the Monster Beetle or Subaru Brat. I have an original NIB CC01 Honda CRV and that one I definitely need to get right.

  • @DustyFingersRC

    @DustyFingersRC

    With the gloss paint, follow this guide as it will work the same. You can add the lacquer to the paint before it is fully cured. Just do very light coats as with gloss I have found the risk of making the paint run by adding too much lacquer is higher. 3 coats of lacquer is good. Leave it a week and then you can polish it with normal car polish. It will look great. I don't like to lacquer over decals. It is risky as it can ruin the decals. If the decals are good they stay stuck down. If anything, just trim them if there is too much if a boarder on them. The only reason people lacquer over decals is to stop them lifting but I have never had that issue and lacquer in top of a vinyl sticker can go wrong and even if it doesn't, I don't think they look as good. We all have different options though so good luck with your choice 👍🏻

    No problem, and one more tip. If something goes wrong at any stage of painting like a drip for example. Don't sweat it, let it dry, sand it back and continue on. All it does is slow you down, it won't ruin a paint a job cause you can fix it. Good luck with it 👍🏻

    Thanks Andy, I do like to try my best to get a good finish and this process was pretty quick to do on a hot day. Just not adding decals due to the fumes from the lacquer needing to fully evaporate requires some patience. If I paint the body first before the build I don't really notice the wait time. Tamiya acrylic paints are designed to bond directly to the plastic so I’m not sure the primer step is required with their TS paints.

  • @DustyFingersRC

    @DustyFingersRC

    5 ай бұрын

    I heard that too from a guy in the hobby shop. Tamiya sell it though so I don't know. Black on black you could likely get away with it. A white primer if you want to give a colour a better chance at coverage. What I do like about using primer though is that you can easily see the surface imperfections and pay attention to proving a better base with light sanding. Appreciate your comment, valid point and thanks for sharing.

    Gana Market Paint Pen. I bought a red one which seems good. I think there are many available now and this particular one only has a round tip so may not be ideal for detailing. I like the chisel tip ones myself. Montana paint is used for graffiti so pretty good stuff which is why I went that route.
