Very interesting results! I love the nimh packs for my Tamiya fleet. They are just reliable and worry free! The batteries now are so much better than the ones we had back in the day. I agree the lipos are best for the higher powered vehicles and the nimhs are just fine for regular run of the mill kits.

Hiya Addam. Yeah I tend to use lipo for everything apart from the Tamiyas that have old non lipo esc's but this shows that there isn't that much difference if I use a big capacity NiMH. Many thanks indeed for watching 😁👍👍

Hey Pete, I am amazed how much time you got out of the NIMH pack! The brushless motor must really help with the run times. Shows why there is still a place for the simple tech in the world of LiPos. Great video pal 🙌🏻

Hey Pete! Any video that features Vanessas box (ooh er!) is always going to be entertaining.... but this one was particularly interesting to an rc nerd like myself! 😁 Your findings pretty much reflected what I have experienced.... which is obviously different from what we were always led to believe in regards to the linear curve of discharge between NMH's and lipos. I now use a mixture of NMH's and 2s/3s lipos, dependent on which vehicle I am using....obviously there are pro's and cons to each style. People tend to forget that the modern good quality 5000MH NMH'S are a far cry from the 1200MH NICADS that we used to use back in the day, where a 5 minute run was all you got, even less if the battery had been fast charged,or you had a modified motor fitted! As you correctly stated, the run times/speed gains between a good NMH and a 2s lipo are marginal....especially when dealing with vintage /tamiyas! But things definitely start to separate more once you start upping the power......and things start to get really fun once you start adding a 3s! Great video fella, and great to see the lunches back out again!! 😁 👍 👍 👍

Hi there. Yeah it was interesting to do this test and it's certainly different to what I thought. I think that NiMH battery I have is a good one and like I was saying it hasn't been used that much compared to the lipo. One other reason I got the NiMH is fine if I want to take an RC on holiday or whatever when I don't want to worry about the whole lipo thing. Oh yeah those old 1200mah packs and the 5 minute run time 😬 You could never go far from your full sized car because you'd need to get back and give it a fast charge from the charger attached to the cigarette lighter socket. Yes 3s and above certainly mean that you can run bigger cars at higher speeds. Many thanks indeed for your great feedback as ever. Best wishes mate 😁👍

@@PeteWylieRC Very true fella, but we were happy with that back then wasn't we? Those old fast/trickle chargers with the manual timer and the switch to select 6/7.2/8.4 or 9.6v NICADS that used to run off the family car!😁 The fond memories are flooding back mate...... My parents used to take us camping in the new forest in their metallic brown cortina estate, complete with poo brown interior!! 😁 Unfortunately the cigarette lighter didn't work on what I used to refer to as the 'Dagenham log'!! Clear as day I can remember the ten year old me popping the bonnet and connecting the Crocodile clips directory to the battery in the Brockenhurst stream car park in order to get a few more runs out of my midnight pumpkin along the sandy, shingle river banks!! Seem to remember doing similar at Bucklers hard and Hengistbury head to! Happy days for sure! But,times move on.......never thought I would be using lipos regularly, hell, even Robs got one now! 😁 Luckily, the New forest has remained pretty much the same though! All the best mate, keep pumping out the great content! 👍 👍 👍

Yeah, if there ever was a RC car that dont need need the extra power and less weight Lipo can provide, its the lunchbox. The chassis is seriously struggling to use much power at all, hence no benefit of more being availible. So why not stick with what you like, I agree. The terrible handling (compared to a typical buggy, even of its era) all round is what makes the lunch box fun even with low power. Bouncing and doing wheelies everywhere with less than 100watts of max power. I ran a fully stock one with the original silver can, just on 3s lipo and it was more than fast enough for everything I wanted mine to do.

  • @PeteWylieRC

Yeah you don't need huge power in these but I do enjoy the 3500 brushless one more than the silver can brushed one. I only use 2s lipo in them. That is interesting for sure. My problem with nimh is/was that I always had to reanimate them after some weeks of storage. Charge them, drive a little charge again and after few cycles they would be ok again. Is that still the case? That was the main reason for me to switch to Lipo. Just charge and they are ready but a little dangerous which I do not like a bit.
