Tamiya Hilux High Lift Complete and 1st Drive

The Hilux High-Lift is complete and went out for its first run. The lights and sounds add to it, I really like the motor sounds with the GT Power sound kit. It did well on the run, but the open diffs are a hinderance, so they are getting locked up! It is a very cool truck, a bit on the pricey side but it is an enjoyable build and a sweet looking truck in the end so I can’t complain. A few things I would have done differently, mainly the dinky little tires, those are just plain terrible on there!
I felt like crap running it so the run footage was a little light, I will get it back out and run it again with the diffs locked and hope to get some better footage of it out in the woods.

Thanks Fil, it turned out looking sweet. Especially with the new wheels and tires, they are a lot more appropriately sized and much more realistic. I did get the diffs locked now and will get it back out for another run at some point, I expect it to do a lot better not getting hung up when a tire or two comes off the ground.

LOL! Yeah, it takes up some space too! They are a fun one to build and it drove better than I expected it to. They look amazing but are definitely more looks than performance. It definitely screams 80s/90s show truck! Mainly the ones that had thousands into the paint, lift and tires but barely had enough motor to move it all around! LOL! Occasionally you ran across one with 350 swap in it and those were a real treat but mostly was a 22r motor pushing about 113HP! Ahhh, the good ol days! Thanks, I am glad you like it!

It looks great Addam!! You won't be getting any flack from me with changing those wheels/tires! The original tires are way too small for that truck! The lights and sounds added to the fun and the motor sound really made my inner little kid very happy!! I really hate turn signal on off-road cars and trucks. I think there is nothing we are going to say or do to keep them from putting them on them though. If I could disable it and only turn them on when I wanted them that would be different but these turn on at the slightest steering input and it was going to drive me batty! LOL! I am glad you enjoyed the run, I have locked the diffs and will get back out with it again and see how it does. I am sure it will be a lot better and not get stuck the moment a tire comes off the ground. I had to try it unlocked to see first though. It does look just like a real show truck from the 90s!!! Take care Robby and have a great week!

Thank you! I am glad you are enjoying the videos! I enjoy them too but mainly enjoy all of you folks in the comments! That makes the videos fun for me! I like having the builds and run documented to be able to go back to and rewatch things any time I want. Tamiya really failed on the tires on this but the replacements look pretty sweet and are much more fitting for the size and style of truck it is. I was a bit angry sitting there looking at it with the stock tires on it and I stuck these on and it just came to life and looked so much better! Yeah, a cheat or shortcut here and there is fine and often sets yours apart from the countless other made strictly to the instructions. I had to point them out in the video, if not then I am sure someone would make a long point about all the things I messed up on it. Normally everyone is super supportive and i appreciate it but every now and again the "expert" shows up to point out all the things I "did wrong" LOL!! I just cut them off before they can start! Thanks for the well wishes, I am feeling a lot better.

Wow! That thing turned out superb matey, I'm LOVING the look of that, great job Addam. What were Tamiya thinking with those stock wheels and tyres? Totally agree, it just doesn't look right..... those ones you added are spot on. The paint job is soooo cool, I don't think a lot of people truly appreciate the amount of time, effort, and cash that goes into finishing a hard body to a very high standard. Primer, sanding, many coats of paint, top clear laquer coats, attaching body parts, polishing up, decals etc etc. It's a lot of work, but at the same time a very rewarding process. Loving the design of the wing mirrors that fold back just like the real thing, great touch man. I think a light poodle around the garden on a dry day is about all that I would be able to do with one of these, it's too nice to get filthy and scratched up! Certainly looked great in action though. Hope you're feeling better now mate! 😊 👍 👍 👍

Thanks James! It turned out looking pretty slick! It is so much better without the silly small stock tires, these look much better and way more realistic. The paint was not too difficult, I just could not get the clear down without some duct ending up in it. Now that it is fully cured I can hit it with some buffing compound and try and get them out. I was not going to try it earlier with the fairly fresh paint before the video. I have locked the diffs now so it doesn't get stuck trying to go over small stuff or whenever a tire comes off the ground. It will only be driven carefully to make sure it does not roll over and damage anything. The sounds make it more fun to just creep around and enjoy it for what it is instead of trying to climb over anything and everything. It is still too much fun to drive over stuff but in a more restrained manner! I am feeling better, thanks for the well wishes. Take care James and have a good week!

I wire up the turn signals on their own channel (5) and use a cheap dumboRC which is a cheap 6 channel controller and use channel 3 to toggle head lights. With the light kit I had I also had to drill out some of the light mounts to make the LED's fit.

Yeah, I need to get a couple 5 channel receivers to have on hand for kits like this. unfortunately wiring is my absolute least favorite part about building and I made do with what I had one hand. I will probably go back into it at some point and add more to it but I really have to to be motivated to to do it! LOL! I think of the 150ish kits I have only 4 or 5 have lights added to them.

@@AddamsPlaygroundYeah I totally get that wiring is a pain and I don't tend to built any of my RC's light kits. I tend to add them to the Crawlers and trail trucks I use most as part of the upgrading I tend to to after the original build to the RC's I use the most. My solution of choice for the wiring it to use cable ties to bundle the cables then hot glue them to the RC body. That way the wires are kept out the way but its still easy to remove them again in the future if needed. That works well for hard bodies kits, with lexan ones I use aluminium tape on the inside of body to stop the parts that rub from wearing through the paint and to hot glue my wires to without damaging the paint. What I like most about adding light kits is getting working tail, brake and revers lights, as they not only look good but are actually functional if you take your RCs out with friends as you can see if when they slow down suddenly ahead of you or start reversing reduce the chances of running your RC into the back of theirs. Most of my RC's have ended up simple LED headlights either wired into a spare unused always on channel or the programming port of the 1080 esc's, but its only my higher end ones like my TRX4 deluxe builders kit, RC4WD TFT2, Tamiya high lift and Bruiser clone. I am still trying to decide what to but in my genuine Tamiya Busier, but the official tamiya one is to expensive for as I would probably yet it wet and kill it quite quickly, that and the amount of wires it has are off putting even for me, as I am sure I would just end up burning myself a lot while trying to hot glue stuff in place. That cheap Bruiser clone turned out to be a very expensive purchase, not due to it being badly built, but because it turned out to be so much fun, I ended up buying a lots of other Trail trucks and crawlers including a genuine Tamiya bruiser 2011 re-release (by far the most expensive Tamiya I have ever purchased). As I not only find a lot of fun to build they get me putting on winter jacket and gloves if needed and taking them out for a walk in the Scottish winter at the weekends and turning the rain and mud that comes with it into a feature to be enjoyed something to be avoided.

@@douglasv4266 In some cases I can enjoy the lights on them but in most cases it really doesn't feel worth it and adds more stuff to go wrong. I do like them on here and the motor sounds made it fun. I am not sure why I dislike the wiring and dealing with it so much, it is not terribly difficult. I just is the least fun for me. I have thought about getting the Bruiser clone a few times but have not pulled the trigger. Now that I have built this one it is bit more appealing. They look so pathetic and small on there, it took away from the look and stance of the truck! I am so much happier with the bigger and more appropriate styled tires on it. I have cheated with the sharpies before and works well. better if they are just lenses without lights but still worked fine with the lights. You can get sharpies in almost every color of the rainbow now. I could not handle the tiny stock tires and the replacements look much more realistic and proper sized. I am glad you enjoyed it and it looks so real in the photos! I am not sure what the issue was with the dust, I normally don't have that issue if painting in the garage. This time every time I put a coat of clear down it looked perfect and I would sneak out of the garage without making any fast movements and still ended up with dust in it! I will take some car buffing compound to it and then buff it out, that should fix 90% of it. I was not confident in the paint being cured hard enough before the video to try it. I did not want to wreck the paint by rushing it! The lights and sounds did add to it and made it fun to crawl around and listen to the motor sounds! Thank you! It turned out great looking once I tossed the stock tires to the side. Those looked too silly and I felt bad for the truck looking like that! It is running the stock motor in it and in second gear it does very well runs over things with little effort and goes fast enough to get from point to point without taking all day. In 1st gear it is really slow and has a ton of gear reduction to crawl over almost everything. Other than getting hung up on stuff it would probably go wherever you want it to. This is on the stock motor and I am sure on a slower motor it would be a stump puller! There is a lot of gear reduction in the gear box.

I bought one of these around a year ago, great truck to me as I'm not really into rc just something I saw as a kid on youtube and wanted to buy and got a pre assembled unit. The one thing I need to know is how you managed to add these new tires and rims. I have seen some things online about needing adapters. If you could clear that up and possibly show what kind of rims/tires and/or adapters you bought and where that would be great,

I did not need any adapters, everything went right on. The truck has the 12mm hexes and is the same thing the after market wheels take. There is not issues of rubbing at all with the wheels and tires I got. Here are my Amazon links to the ones I bought from them. for the wheels amzn.to/3TW0AQm and tires amzn.to/3xEygL3 (those are my affiliate links so if you do buy them I get a tiny bit from the sale at no extra cost to you, I just get a small bit of Amazon's profit! LOL!

I got the Tamiya Ford 350 truck. It is basically the same thing as your Toyota truck. I did get the Tamiya MFU unit. I think it is called the MFU unit. This module does everything. It has sound, it is an ESC , it does have turn signal indicators. However, it is very difficult to set up and it is very expensive too. Thoughts?

  • @AddamsPlayground

Yes, the MFU or MFC (they go by both) is a really neat controller but it is kind of dated and way over priced. Tamiya has always had over priced electronics. I have one in my grand hauler and I like it but they can be tedious to setup. I am going to get a Beier light and sound controller for the new semi truck. No more expensive and I can customize the lights and sounds on it to suite what I want so a much better setup.

@@AddamsPlayground I agree, way over priced. I had another one for my Mercedes box truck. I decided not use it. I sold it on eBay and instead just put in LEDs. Much easier to do. Thoughts?

Is it just me or does it seem like the sound is off on low end throttle response? I have a Sense sound mach9ine on mt clod and it does the same thing.

  • @AddamsPlayground

    @AddamsPlayground

    3 ай бұрын

Yeah the sound is not perfect, it is linear with the throttle but somewhat limited in range so at very low speeds it can sound kind of flat depending on what gear you are in. In 2nd gear it is not going to change pitch much at low speed but in 1st it will change more as you are using a bit more range in the throttle input. My tanks and the MFC in the grand hauler do the same thing. Just a limitation to the way it handles the inputs from the ESC. It still adds to it and make the inner little kid all excited and entertained!

  • @AddamsPlayground

No worries, it is not a common thing! The gear box has a servo linked to it and on the radio I have a 3 position switch. I have it adjusted so a click back and it goes into first gear, then a click forward and it shifts into second and then the final click shifts it into third. It basically is servo turned left is first, servo centered is second and then servo turned right is third gear. Instead of it moving like it would in steering the truck it just goes to those 3 fixed positions by clicking the switch on the radio.

Yeah I rarely put lights on things as it is just an extra things like headlights and stuff but for this one it was fun to have on there and hear the engine sounds. I will baby this one and I have the other crawler to beat one and bang around, this will be more of a show and shine rig. The wheels and tires are the same on CC01 but most of those are no where near as tall as this so they don't look quite as odd.

These look pretty appropriate for the truck so I am good with these. They a re a huge improvement over the silly small stock ones.
