So much nostalgia! My love for RC started in 1989 with a Tyco Turbo Hopper and then my neighbor got an RC10 and I knew I wanted to get serious. I would constantly check out issues of RC Car Action at our school library and I’ll never forget seeing the full-page ad for the Blackfoot with the front of the truck smashing through a wood floor- that simple ad made me want that truck so bad! Then they did a review on the Tamiya Nissan King Cab and they customized it with a wild (very 80’s/90’s) yellow paint job and See’s aluminum wheels and the scale looks blew my mind and I fell hard for that truck. But THEN they did a write up on the Tamiya Bullhead and that became the one I had to have and I got it for Xmas ‘91 and my brother got a Traxxas Sledgehammer. The absolute best of times!

Great video! Also, I don’t like the plastic that Tamiya uses which is abs plastic which gets brittle and crack over time. I think nylon composite type plastic would have been better for most of their rc cars, buggies and trucks. That’s why I think Kyosho and Associated went the other direction with their race pedigree cars of which I think uses better materials. I’m sure Tamiya could have went that route, but at a business stand point I can see why Tamiya used abs and still continue to use abs on most of their RC’s. As for the suspension parts, if you have the money I would get the aluminum arm parts for the black foot abs monster beetle from eBay.😂. I got the rere’s of the Blackfoot and monster beetle I’m using the stock esc and a Tamiya BZ motors for both. They both have filled shocks, but I feel that the spring rate for front is to stiff.

Gorgeous old cars, Chris! Great information here, I totally agree, anything to improve the strength and durability of these rigs has got to be a good thing, it really doesn't matter if it's not "purist" - just cool to "keep 'em running"!!! And thanks for the mention! I think I broke all the same parts as you did on the Monster Beetle! I came up with similar solutions, too. You know I dig those old radios, man! Take care, dude! :O)

I like the rubber grommet to protect the shells, good to stop vibration too. I use a plastic disk on mine but I am currently restoring a King Blackfoot and there is no space to put the disk and still get the pin in. I need another solution, maybe some clear protective tape or I will sand the disks down a little. I t needs to be think whatever it is.

Great video, love seeing the vintage stuff 👌 I have a vintage Blackfoot and a re-re that I use as a runner.. All the upgrades you are talking about take me back to the 80's and my original Blackfoot and the make do attitude we had back then of just get it working:) I have made my own side plate supports for the gear case plates and no more crunching gears even on brushless and lipo.. I also bought some vintage crp rear trailing arm supports and that helps with the rear drive shafts from poping out as in it no longer happens.. I also run the Tamiya dirt tunned motors as they are so cheap and give just enough of a speed increase

I am currently building a Monster Beetle, among other Tamiya Kits, but as I haven't finished it yet, I thought it would be a good chance to do a few upgrades before the completion of my Monster Beetle. Excellent tips! Thank you Chris. The monster beetle is a favourite of mine so any ideas to keep it running are appreciated. You also reminded me of the way we used to make do with what we had during that golden era. Here in Australian, most cars had bits of bent wire and the odd wood screw keeping them together. It all just made the cars more 'yours'. Seeing them survive another run also gave a sense of accomplishment. Thanks again mate!
