Tamiya BBX Thoughts and 1st Drive

The Tamiya BBX is done, and I like it. I really like the metallic purple I chose for it but overall, it is a nice buggy. The run got cut a little short as the ball diff started to slip and I did not want to keep running it like that. I need a gear diff option for this! I am not a fan of ball diffs!
I may have sounded a little down on it, but I am still a little bitter it took so long to get here and all the issues with Tower/Horizon Hobbies over the last few months I lost the excitement for it! It is a nice buggy and drives nicely, but it does have a few quirks! They all do, I guess!

Very much so, it is a new spin on the classic Tamiya style of scale vehicles. Overall it is a great buggy, juts a few quirky things I am not sure if they really did their best effort in. The front springs make no sense to me and should have has a few more coils to them to make them right. The trap door for the battery compartment could have had some changes to make it better. I wish I could be a QC tester for them! LOL! Don't see that happening though! LOL!

I would live to see an old school tamiya promo of this buggy. Undercranked video with the drawling accent of Bud Voss giving the commentary like the fast attack. “It’s almost too realistic” and “this buggy will go where you want it to.”

I just want you all to know if I had a problem or trouble with something so you are not surprised by it or are aware of it later if you get one. It is a sharp looking buggy and I am glad I went with the purple, it looks cool. I was annoyed the diff was slipping as i was having fun with it but had to call it quits to keep from ruining it. I really prefer gear diffs, so much easier and I am not refined enough to appreciate any advantages to the ball diffs! LOL!

So it's not all sweetness and light, eh, Addam?!??! 🤣🤣 Sounds just like almost every Tamiya I've built! They say Tamiya moves in mysterious ways and here is your proof! I agree, Tamiya should listen to us guys that buy and build all their products - hell yeah, even send us some pre-production kits and get some free and useful feedback! I can work from home too! 😅. Great overview, I'm sure this will come in handy if I ever get around to buying one... knowing the "little issues" is a great help to us out here! But anyway, I agree it's basically a lovely buggy and love your colour choice. Nice rip around the track, too. Take care, buddy!

It is a cool buggy. Other than the electronics being a bit tight to get in (depending on what you use) it is a fairly straight forward build. It drives well, a bit squirrely like any 2wd buggy but it it pretty controllable. I hope you get on to build and run this summer!

It ran some pretty respectable lap times out there; that 17t HH motor definitely seemed like a good choice! I agree, give folks a gear diff option; I know that’s what I prefer! A ton of great information and insight you supplied us with Addam! When it was announced, I knew I wanted it, but the longer the release wait was the more my excitement died down. I imagine I’ll still get one at some point, it’s just not at the top of my list anymore. Yours looks awesome!👍😊

It ran times right there with the Gorgon! LOL! Not sure if that is bad for the BBX or great for the Gorgon! LOL! It did right around average for first run of a 2wd buggy honestly. If the ball diff had not been slipping I would have pushed it harder and it would have done a bit better. I get there is a appealing stigma to "Oh it has a ball diff so it must be a race buggy" but I am not a fan and I want to build the trans once and never have to think about it again!! Tamiya needs to stop announcing things 6 or 7 months in advance! especially when they could not deliver them in time. Then the whole mess with Horizon/Tower made it worse! I am still waiting on my Boomerang... Seem like the most recent stuff has a shorter arrival time so maybe the learned but I doubt it. I am sure at the beginning of 2024 they will announce more stuff we will have to wait 6 months for.

Great recap and run Addam. I like that you went the brushed way. This was essential for me to know and one of the reasons why I put this buggy on the long line. With the 5th wheel I'm complete with you, and I never understand why they promoted it, but didn't put it into the kit. Your rear cover looks good and is an awesome idea.

  • @AddamsPlayground

    @AddamsPlayground

    9 ай бұрын

Thanks Dirk! I am still old school and prefer brushed motors and it runs well on the 17t. The buggy is geared low so you do need a faster motor to get it going. I would say the 15-17t is just about right for it. Anything lower and you are just going to be fighting wheel spin the whole time. The extra tire being promoted but not included was kind of dumb but at least it was not on the box like that and just an "option". I like the smooth panel on there and make the white flow from the front to the roof to the rear nicely. Glad you enjoyed the video!

Thanks John! Since this one is a bit more of a pricier kit from them I expect a bit more thought and refinement and for the most part it if but there were a few things that confused me on why they did it like that. As always all of the kits have their quirks and oddities to them that makes us scratch our heads, so this is no different! Maybe if the release something else on this chassis it will make more sense! It did turn out nice in the end and I am very happy with the looks of it! It drove well but the pesky ball diff cut it short. Thanks! I have seen quite a few different color schemes that look really good on this buggy. Not too many you can get away with that but it works with this one. It is a nice kit and it looks and run really well. It is a on the pricier side but I am glad you found a deal on one. The only issues I have with it is the tight quarters to get the electronics in and remain hidden and the need for a battery lead extension when using most ESCs as it is a pain to try and hook it up without one. Once you get the electronics in you are good and power the lead extension is a minor thing. Have fun with yours!

Overall yes, a very good buggy. Of course with any new kit there are some quirks and I do think I was kind of harsh on it some as I really had a hard time getting excited about it. The long time getting it and then having to watch everyone across the world build and run theirs there was little excitement left when doing mine. I still have a smile one my face out running it until I could tell the diff was slipping. I cleaned it up and it is waiting for me to tear it down and tighten that up. I am not a fan of the ball diffs! I am glad you enjoyed the video and I do like the rear end with the cover plate on there. The spare tire thing wasn't doing it for me. Take care Pete!

This is an excellent review. The car looks great. I like the purple and modified wheels. I thought it look great after the run with a little dirt on it. I think pointing out the issues you had with the car will be helpful. Out of all the things you pointed out, the front springs are baffling to me. I am sure Tamiya has many, many springs it could have chosen. Like I have said and heard from others, I don't understand some of the things Tamiya does. You did an excellent job on the build.

I am glad you enjoyed it. I do like the way it turned out and it looks nice out in he sun. Sadly when I took the pics of it the sun was nowhere to be found! The metallic looks great in the sun! When I am recording these I am just going off the cuff and telling you all what I think, never thought out or scripted for sure. Some times when I am editing it I realize I am kind of down on things and seem to be overly critical of stuff. I guess being an all new kit and a modern release I figured they would be able sort stuff out properly before sending it out the door. The springs were silly, they could have easily fixed that issue from the start by adding a few more coils to it. I have seen springs made, it is not difficult to add in a few more wraps! Overall it is a cool and good kits, just like all of them it has its quirks and oddities!

Great review Addam! Tamiya being Tamiya I'm afraid, something we are used to by now.... Just can't work out how delayed some of their releases can be, it's certainly not a good business model, but hey, we keep buying them non the less! Loving that livery, and the custom body panel on the rear mate. It's great to see so many people straying from the standard box art, and getting creative on this one. Seems as though electronics space is a bit of an issue with many of their new kits, which seems kinda weird as these days all the electrical components are smaller, and there's less of them! (no longer needing a MSC, second servo etc) You brought up a good point regarding the battery lead clip, and the allocation for a commonly used switch.... something that bugs me to, and I'm sure pretty much everyone else who builds their kits to!! You joke about offering to help them with these design flaws, but in all honesty they have been doing this 47 years now.... surely an organisation as large as Tamiya must have many, many staff in research and development that would have flagged up these issues many years ago?? 🤔 Don't get me wrong, I love Tamiya, but their logic on so many of their business modules just doesn't make any sense!! She looked great around the track, posting some nice times..... but boy I don't envy you with the clean up on that one!! 🤣 I thought those mud guards on the TD2 /TD4 were awful..... but, maybe I'm seeing some logic now! 😉 Cheers for the very honest, and factual run down on this lovely model..... I'm still tempted to say the least! 👍 👍 👍

Hey there James! Tamiya certainly marches to the beat of their own drum and always has. You are right though, we are kind of a slave to them as building kits nowadays is very limited to them and some from Kyosho and that's about it. I still wonder why the do so many odd things. I m sure they have plans for something else on this chassis where the choice here may be explained there. All kits have some oddities and quirks about them that make you wonder why it was done this way so this one is no different! It is a cool looking buggy and it drives nice, too bad it start slipping the diff and cut it short. I ordered the gear diff and the slipper clutch son once both of those get here i will tear it down and replace the diff with one I don't have to worry about in the future. The slipper clutch is one of those since I am in there upgrades! Take care my friend and enjoy the rest of your week!

Good luck with the gear diff and slipper fella, it's nice that we have the option to be able to mess about with these kinda things. Being able to fine tune things to our own desired specs/preference is one of the reasons I prefer kits to all these ready to run things that you see so much theses days! Well, long story short, she went to a local hobby shop where we live in Orange County New York and told the hobby dealer that her grandson like to build models and did he have any big ones and he sold her that saying it was just a kit car. Needless to say I was ecstatic. Every birthday after that was a total let down. But I it took me about 2 weeks with my dad and brothers it was the best gift ever. Like I said I still run it. I run my cats like you do👍🏻 I don’t best on them or use ramps like the average basher enthusiast it doesn’t make sense to me. Why would you want to break it you just got it. Oddly enough, it might have helped the handling, not too much rear end action, it did some decent lap times, probably comparable to the Gorgon, ha ha! I agree with you, I also much prefer gear differentials. But I think I am that single one RC enthusiast who doesn't love the HW1060, ha ha... Great to see you finally got it and got it going, I have same syndrome as you, the hype drops after a while... Was a bummer with that hobby shop and stuff...

Yeah it was a mess after the run, It seems the track is always either too dry and dusty or too wet and muddy. It is hard to get out there in that perfect in between times! I wish it was the slipper, but I did not put one in it. Balls are frustrating and I don't really see the point unless it is a legit race buggy to have one. I think 99% of the people that have cars with them wouldn't really notice a difference in performance between a ball and a gear diff. Sadly it was getting times in line with the Gorgon! Funny but kind of bad too. I like the 1060, and I think so many other folks do as for $20-25 you cannot beat it. Now there are a lot of knockoffs out there on places like eBay that will go up in smoke in a heartbeat so you do have to be careful where you get them from. The excitement of getting slowly disappeared as the release date got pushed back and then the hobby shop snafu pushed it another month. By the time I had gotten it, I had already watched dozens and dozens of unboxing, build and run videos of it so there was no magic in doing mine. same thing is happening with the Boomerang as I still have not gotten that and no idea when it will be here.

If you wanted to upgrade it and to go with brushless then you are probably going to sink more into it anyways so that is an expected expense. Never tried that one, the degreaser is just too simple to not do it this way, the hardest part is rinsing them off! LOL! I have seen lots of different colors and they all look pretty good! Yeah I called it quits before I ruined it, I am not a fan of the ball diffs at all! I wish I had a gear diff for it and could just toss the ball one out completely! I am not refined enough to be able to tell any improvement with the ball diff so gears are good enough for my hack driving skills! LOL!

LOL! Maybe one day I'll be asked to be on their team! I am sure it is very hard to get everything right and make everyone happy. The bad thing is the do tend to put form over function in same areas and it can impact them negatively. Sometime they just make horrible decisions but I guess we all do from time to time! Congrats on getting one and you will enjoy it! Just take the steps one by one and double check everything before moving on and you will be just fine. Tamiya has probably the best instruction out there. It is only once in a while they make you scratch you head. Make sure to read all the text in the steps as occasionally there is important info in them the picture does not show. Mostly they are general tips or info on upgrades but it is best to read them all. Have fun with it!!

It is not normal for them to make a single use chassis, they have built an empire in reusing and recycling parts and chassis of almost all their stuff. I do speed up the speaking part of the videos some, so that may be some of it. Being overweight, having asthma and usually running around getting stuff ready before sitting down may be some of it too...

Yeah.. Tamiya makes questionable decisions with stuff they make.

I think it is tradition at this point LOL! They have been doing it on all their kits for decades so it seems like it is a feature not a bug! LOL! The too short front springs really got me though, it is so easy to wrap a few more coils on them to make it right instead of good enough. Overall it is a cool kit and a much better release than the flop of the TD4!

@@adrianharrison5208 After the initial buzz of it and the first round of folks getting found out there were lots of issues to address it kind of fell off the map. I personally think it is ugly as sin too but I have seen a few that are not awful. The body shell that Owen from Revive RC did for it does help it out. The diff nuts failing, the axles popping out, the difficulty getting in electronics and the looks all made it extremely unappealing to me.

@@AddamsPlayground the electronics is a real pain that's true, I had mine as soon as they came out and I never had a problem with those plastic nuts. Running 2s and brushless. I think with us Tamiya lot so wrapped up in the classics Tamiya is always going to have a hard time with something new 🙂 personally I love the way they drive. Loving your channel, it's come on along way and always one of my favorite channels to watch 👍
