Tamayo Perry, a talented surfer and actor known for his role in the fourth "Pirates of the Caribbean" movie, tragically passed away at the age of 49 after a shark attack while surfing off the coast of Hawaii.
According to Honolulu's emergency services, the incident occurred on Sunday, June 23, 2024, at 1 p.m. while Perry was surfing near Goat Island on Oahu's famed North Shore. Tamayo, who also worked as an ocean safety lifeguard, was reportedly taking a break from his duties when the incident happened. Shayne Enright, a spokesperson for the Honolulu Emergency Services Department, confirmed in a press conference that authorities responded to calls of a surfer being attacked around Mālaekahana Beach on Oahu’s North Shore just before 1 p.m. local time.
Despite swift response from emergency services, Perry succumbed to his injuries. His fellow lifeguards and the entire surfing community are mourning the loss of this esteemed waterman. During the conference, Honolulu Ocean Safety Acting Chief Kurt Lager described Perry as “a lifeguard loved by all.”
Born on the east side of Oahu, Hawaii, Tamayo had been a professional surfer for over a decade, conquering some of the world’s most challenging waves. His infectious personality and love for the ocean made him a beloved figure both locally and internationally.
In addition to his surfing career, Perry gained recognition for his role as one of the buccaneers in the 2011 film “Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides,” starring Johnny Depp, Penelope Cruz, and Geoffrey Rush. Beyond Hollywood, he appeared in TV shows such as “Lost,” “Hawaii Five-0,” and “Blue Crush.” Perry famously won the Pipeline Masters surfing competition in 1999.
His death has sent shockwaves through the surfing world. Friends and colleagues paid heartfelt tributes, emphasizing his infectious personality and love for others. Fans on social media have expressed their condolences and remembered Perry as someone who died doing what he loved. One Facebook user commented, "I think he went the way he loved in the water 💦💕," while another wrote, "He left this world like a true water legend." Another added, "You guys just can't stay away from the water 🤔 BUT HE DIED DOING WHAT HE LOVED."
Tamayo is survived by his wife, Emilia. Just four weeks before the tragic incident, Tamayo shared a touching tribute to his wife on Facebook for her birthday. He wrote, sharing some photos of them and friends:
"TAMATO says, 'Bad days are always canceled when you’re hanging out with this beautiful & wonderful mermaid 🧜‍♀️! I never want you to forget that I absolutely love & adore you. Thank you for always pulling me out of my box, & instigating & sharing so many wild & crazy adventures with me. You are a wild child & it will be an honor to share many more birthdays, surf sessions & journeys around God’s glorious planet together with you my darling. Happy Birthday my gorgeous wife & I hope your day is an absolutely special one for you!!!'"
As we bid farewell to Tamayo, we honor his memory and the joy he brought to people's lives. May the waves carry him to eternal peace.
