Great information! We're currently living in Nicaragua but are thinking of spending a few months in Costa Rica. Tamarindo looks like a nice place to spend some time. 😃

I’m a New Yorker born and raised. I just get by. I can afford this. I’m looking at places to live a better life. Mexico is Intresting but I hate the bars on their windows everywhere. This is the best video on a more modern way of living in CR I’ve seen. It’s been hard to find videos like this. Thank you.

Great video. Straight to the point. I'm a travel agent and just spent 3 weeks vetting luxury properties, but I like Tamarindo and considering going back there for a while. Thanks good info.

Few things wrong: - Taxis wont charge you 1.10 dollars, those are colectivos and they will beep at you when you are at the street and ask where you are going to. Usually from town to town each colectivo charges $1. If you ask a Taxi to take you somewhere, they will charge you nearly 4x what the colectivo charges. - There is no uber in Tamarindo, it was implemented but barely any drivers decided to drive so it was cancelled. Apart from that, nice video! :)

Costa rica is the MOST expensive central american country (fact) and still expensive among all latin american countries. Goes to show how people rationalize their emotions about something. Having grown up in CR in the 90s its sad to see how expensive things have gotten and shocked to see how expensive tamarindo is

@james dean Yeah Costa Rica has gotten pretty expensive. What do you miss most from living there?

It is possible for a couple to live in Tamarindo on a monthly budget of $2,000 to $3,000, and unique from many other Central American destinations, Tamarindo also offers luxury living, should that be what you're looking for. Aside from housing, the two most costly budget items will be electricity and imported goods.

Eternal Summer Rising - Yes, it's very possible. It's best to negotiate your rent during the offseason to get a good rental for the year.

@@eonian9784 On the first trip we covered about 900 miles in 6 days but primarily the central valley, La Fortuna and Arenal, Guanacaste (Tamarindo, Brazilito, playa Flamingo, and Playa Coco, across the Ferry to Puntarenas, Jaco and Quepos and back to SJ. Last January to Grecia and Dominical/uvita when deciding where to live. The southern zone is what I settled on. Love it here😊

Excellent video, however you undershot virtually every expense by at least 20-30%. Costa Rica is no longer that affordable.

@@eonian9784 I am actually stuck in the US until the beginning of the new year, but will then be back in Costa Rica for the first 6 months of 2021. I have previously lived in Heredia and near Puerto Jimenez, and have additionally spent a considerable amount of time in Playa del Coco, Samara, and Drake Bay (at least 6-8 weeks each), as well as having visited just about every town in Costa Rica at one time or another. In my experience, I have found some areas to be a fair bit more expensive than others, and this more or less is directly relates to how popular the spot is as a tourist destination. When it comes to this, I would argue that places like Tamarindo, Flamingo, Nosara, Santa Teresa, and Manuel Antonio should generally be considered to be on the most expensive end of Costa Rica's towns. In the middle price category I would include places like Samara, Jaco, Uvita, La Fortuna and maybe the nicer areas of the Central Valley (e.g. Escazu - I say maybe because you don't really need a car or air conditioning nearly as much in the Central Valley). For middle to lower cost, I would include the Osa Peninsula and the Caribbean side. And finally, for the lowest costs category, I would include all of the non-touristic areas, and specifically the more inland non-touristic regions of the country. Overall, I have found living in the Osa Peninsula to be roughly 80-85% of what I would normally spend in California for a fairly comparable lifestyle (e.g. similar quality lodging, having a vehicle, groceries, eating out, excursions, health insurance, etc.). On the other hand, I have found the Tamarindo area to be a bit more expensive than this (not a lot, but at least 5-10% more). Every person has their own comfort level for spending, and for me (although I have lived in Costa Rica for under $1000 per month), my baseline estimate for comfortable living is roughly around $2700 per month for two people, and it can go up significantly from there with the family (especially if you pay for private schooling, use the air conditioner very much, and have your own vehicles). Granted, for the same price I couldn't imagine being on the beach in California.

Interesting we’re living in Los Angeles and from your analysts we would still be saving over 1000 usd on rent alone even living in Tamarindo! Question for you about how far from the beach do you need to be to not have salt damage to the car, and belongings? Estimate?

@Darren Ring There are actually two golf courses near by Pinilla Golf Course and the Garra de Leon Golf Course. There may be more that I am unaware of. I dont know the prices but the Pinilla Golf Course was very nice and let us film all over it!

The Nicoyoa Peninsula is nice to visit, but it’s has no medical care, government services, public water or sewage. At this safety/adventure level, you have just cheaper opportunities at Panama’s Los Asientos Peninsula which has few hotels, bars, and tourists but more unspoiled beaches. The beach towns and cities of NP are almost entirely foreigners. Costa Rican’s live on the central plateau because there are less mosquitoes and historically less malaria. La Fortuna is the place to go for a less degree of bugs than coastal areas. Tamarindo, Montezuma and the other Nicoya Peninsula cities are similar to Bali Indonesia, but with drier climate. This CR is not a realistic place to live in light of the total absence of medical infrastructure. In CR, you have to be within 2 hours of the capital, since traffic will double the time to the country’s only hospitals. Lastly, Panama charges no income tax on seniors who retire in Panama, and obtain dual citizenship, for income earned outside the country. CR charges double income taxation, upon dual citizenship, except for investments registered for tax exemption at time of residency application. CR gives squatters rights to any home you leave behind unattended.

This post was from three days ago. The cost of living information was verified last week. What you are wondering is if this is current with Covid because much of the footage was shot before masks were a thing. The information is up to date, we try to make these videos fairly evergreen so they can still be viewed in the long term. Some things to think about if you are planning a move now. 1. Check out Airbnb month-long rentals. I have found some during covid that are the same cost as year-long contracts pre-covid. If it is a possibility for you try and negotiate in person for longer stays. I target the hotels/hostels that have higher prices listed online. There are some that have not updated cost for covid and have low occupancy. 2. I notice some restaurants are having to charge a lot more because they are having far fewer customers. Hope this helps.

There are not much lifeguard, you are on your own. So if you want to go surfing just be careful. There are people drowning every year without being reported. I was there and almost died.

Notice the big muscular war-dogs. Back in the day packs of big dogs roamed the area, and you better be carefull not pissing them off. The late night Phuket dogs that snap at your heels as you hump to photolocation can't compare at all.

Costa Rica is no longer an inexpensive place like it once was and Florida may be a better choice for many Americans looking for the comforts of home. I feel that what you are getting in Costa Rica is Amazing adventure, nature, and less crowded surfing.
