Yeah, I most kits I see for sale either have B8s or SBRs. B8s are definitely better than SBRs, but alot of drummers don't know that AAs are not bad on the wallet. I was able to pick up most of mine like my AA thin for 150 CAD used and hats for 230, with no key holing whatsoever. Pay mind a B8 pack is I think 180 retail, so it's not horrible, but for a couple extra bucks I'd go for the AA and build on it over time.

I bought exact kit, so it appears, except silver, same black bass drum hoops, 12, 13, 16, and 22. Says made in Japan. Excellent condition $150, no heads, but well worth it. Does anyone have information on this kit? What year, and most of all, what is the wood? Is it the birch or mahogany?

Check out the old TAMA catalogs on their website(s). This series of Rockstar was made in the late 90's / early 2000's before they brought back the Superstars. There was also an earlier series in the late 80's also with long lugs but are more square/angular lugs. The Rockstars had mahogany / basswood shells. Basswood is a fairly soft wood like mahogany but these TAMA drums, even though "low-end" are well made and sound great. At the time they were the mid-range kits (before Superstar's came back circa 2004) Some of the Rockstars which had a lacquer may have a single outer layer of basswood or birch which stains nicely.

@@oldowl4290 wow. Unbelievable. I wonder why the little info i found said initially asian mahogany, later birch/ bassswood. And dont get me wromg, i totally believe what youre saying. I had nought a set of mapex-rebels. Which wete for sure, all poplar. Poplar wood itself is real white or pale looking wood. And yes, very soft. I drilled mounts in a 14x shell using a screw screwdriver. .

Jacob Walker I've read they are poplar, at least in the later years, but the early ones do have a mahogany core. I think the original Rockstars of the mid to late 80's may have been all Mahogany. Some Mahogany is also actually very hard on the janka scale but in drums its typically a soft wood type used in cheaper drums. But.. this is also great for jazz kits because of the warmth and softer tones. Some companies make mahogany kits with maple reinforcement rings which is really the way to go as it gives warmth but a really strong shell where the heads mount. Lastly, most Rockstars of the late 90's-2000's will have a made in China or Taiwan badge so if a Japan badge that's an early Rockstar made in the late 80's or a very rare kit when first made in the late 90's.

@@jacobwalker925 yeah not bad at all. I updated and retracted what I said earlier. I initially found people saying these were a poplar mix but agree that they are a Basswood/Mahogany mix. Even DW makes a Maple / Mahogany mix so while these are cheaper drums you can't necessarily say Mahogany is cheap. TAMA is known for making great shells and at the time these were a "mid-range" kit.
