Talyllyn Preservation The Early Years : A volunteer reminisces.

Фильм және анимация

When working on our documentaries. We typically prototype a bunch of different edits.
Most of the time they are deleted as the final narrative takes form. However we've decided to tidy one up and share it with you.
It contains footage from various scouting trips, shoot days and from our time as new volunteers at the Talyllyn.
The narration is a test piece we recorded. The audio itself is a reading of an article published in a magazine around 20 years after the birth of the Talyllyn Railway Preservation Society.
It outlines an early volunteers experience working at the railway in its first two decades
This is our way of saying thanks. Thanks to our supporters. Viewers. Our new vibrant railway loving audience. And to those volunteers who work throughout the year to keep this important slice of Welsh history alive.

Thanks for a reminder of my own extensive happy volunteering on the TR in the 1960s - pre- block cabins and a blue Douglas.

I hope the film has helped reignite some old memories of the time. As a relatively new volunteer (Started in the traffic dept in November 2023) I find the stories that get passed down from volunteers a source of great inspiration. It's exciting to know how far the railway has come and how it will grow going into the future.

There is mention of an important broadcast re the railway in 1957 - what was it and can it be seen anywhere? Thanks.

Hiya. I think the broadcast in question was for a BBC series called 'Now'. It used to be available but it doesn't seem to be available at the mo. The behind the scenes footage is available on bfi player (search for cader Idris & Talyllyn). What I'll do is ask my friend who works with the narrow gauge museum and T.R archive to see if its still about 🙂

Hello again. I've just spoken to one of the volunteers at the narrow gauge railway museum in Tywyn. He is responsible for archiving and collecting video relating to the t.r etc. here's what he had to say.... The live BBC broadcast was on the 22nd May 1957 at 17.25 presented by Huw Weldon and Wynford Vaughan Thomas. The BBC broadcast was repeated the following day and excerpts were used in the BBC programme “The Golden Age of Steam Railways - Small is Beautiful” first broadcast in 2012 and still periodically repeated. The BBC broadcast was “archived” by the BBC using a process called “telecine” where in this case a cine camera recorded the footage of the live broadcast on a TV monitor. The BBC kindly gave a copy of the broadcast to the railway some years ago for us to include in our archives.

@@HiraethFilm - thanks again. I'll do a more detailed search (and it's possible I have subsequently seen this). I went down a few rabbit holes and saw a number of old films of the railway. I did all this visually only (as I was working on/listening to some music at the same time). In fact I'm pretty sure I DID find it - but now need to go back and LISTEN! :)

Can you make your content inclusive by formatting the auto captioning into closed captioning please? it is extremely hard to watch it relying only on the auto captioning sadly (I'm Profoundly Deaf)

Hi again. I've made a new set of subtitles. Had a little trouble synching some bits but it should all be in place now. 🙂
