Today, we bring you the second episode from HODINKEE Japan, featuring Naoya Hida. Before jumping into the world of watches, Hida was active as a professional modeler creating original cast models for garage kits. In the 1990s, Hida started his career in sales and marketing for watch brands including Eterna, Jaeger-LeCoultre, Vacheron Constantin, and Breguet. He was also behind the launch of F.P. Journe and Ralph Lauren Watch & Jewelry in the Japanese market.
Virtually everyone in the Japanese watch industry knows Hida, and he finally launched his own brand to create his ideal watches. We have featured the brand’s debut piece NH Type 1B (on HODINKEE Japan) and this year’s brand new NH Type 2A. I must admit, we expected a somewhat dress-centric collection before meeting him, but his personal lineup turned out to be quite diverse. Let’s look into them.

The Hodinkee Japan episodes are very interesting. Not as much of the same run-of-the-mill brands you see usually and that's refreshing.

Breath of fresh air!
He has Patek and Vacheron but the most beautiful watch he has is his own
Damn, this one was stellar. I love that he didn't just bring out his flexing pieces or all of his brand's watches! He ran the gambit from a Swatch to a Vacheron. A true watch collector who can appreciate all the different levels of watch design and mechanics. This one was an absolute joy to watch, I'm excited for the next one!
This interview gave me chills. Not only is his technical knowledge of watches profound, his passion and appreciation for the art of watchmaking are inspiring. Thanks for the interview Hodinkee, this is up there with John Mayer
This man has a beautiful collection. Honest and humble person as well.
So much more interesting than watching 400 Rolexes in row

Lmaooooooooo true
Way better than discussing the same Pateks/Rolex/AP, he’s got real stories behind his watches, fascinating, more!!
The humble ones always make the best episodes ;0
I don't speak a word of Japanese (just English and so-so Russian) but the connection between both the interviewer, and his subject, and their shared interest in (and passion about) watches really came across in this video. No translation was needed!
That's what talking watches is about. Really interesting watches and stories!
This gentleman is a collector I can connect with. I love his taste and thoughts on watches, what a wonderful collection
We need more hodinkee japn
This man is a true collector. I love the reasoning behind his collection and the passion he exhibits.
The best talking watches episodes are from Japan for sure .
"When you work for a brand you end up loving it" is the most Japanese thing I've ever heard.
The selection of watches chosen is very genuine and honest and reflective of the steps most of us got took when diving more into the world of watches.

The watches are excrement - old and shabby. I want new Patek & AP
Now THIS is a Talking Watches episode! Not a Parading (the same 3 brands of) Watches. Thank you Hodinkee!
Passion always beats somebody just trying to buy a collection by checking off boxes on the checklist of typical collector watches.

Really hoping the Japanese series continues. Great stories, great watches .. from seiko and swatch to patek .. this was a fascinating episode and collection.
The Japanese episodes give me the vibe of depth and emotion, really interesting! Really dig it!
Not surprising this fella made it to the top, intelligent, humble and an incredibly enthusiastic employee, he becomes the brand he is affiliated to, a lesson to anyone trying to make it in the luxury lifestyle field, great content
A true watch enthusiast. Well done Hodinkee JP!
What an episode!! The interviewer asks the right questions at the right time. Very good pacing and love Mr. Hida’s diverse collection. Like come on, he has patek & vacheron in his collection and his latest acquisition is a KS! “Clap Clap” respect.
Glad theres a good episode now not full of rolex. Just real watches
Hodinkee's Japanese guests > everyone else
Man, I would kill to have a beer with Hida-san. Such a cool dude, a great taste in watches and super approachable and interesting.
A different view in watch collecting, far from the Rolex hype. Very interesting.
Long time I haven't been enjoying TW so much, Hodinkee Japan is bringing some fresh air to this channel. Good to see people actually talking about watches, and not countless collectible versions of the same watch (and their barely disguised value).
What an episode! Hida-san is clearly extremely knowledgeable and experienced in watches. He had such great stories/facts about every timepiece.
Yes! Please more Hodinkee Japan! I loved the host and a collection that wasn't the same old rolex, patek, whatever!
I always get caught up in reading the subtitles that I have to rewatch it to see the watches. Not a bad thing. Not a bad thing at all.
Nice to see a unique collection. And not just the same usual 12-14 Patek watches every random „watch collector“ owns.
Wonderful video. You can really see the love and passion he has for watches and their history. Kudos to Hodinkee Japan for their consistent quality and video craftsmanship.
this episode will be a classic 👍👍👍

@@michaelbishop9157 Actually Hida-san's Seiko "Speedmaster" is equally eclectic as his other watches, and not the usual run-of-the-mill Omega Speedy people typically associate with the Speedmaster name.

@@Ins3rtN4m3H3r3 can you explain how it's equally eclectic ?
@Ins3rtN4m3H3r3
4 жыл бұрын
@@michaelbishop9157 Sure, and this may be just my experience of course. The Speedmaster name is typically associated with Omega. Hodinkee did an indepth reference of it here kzread.info/dash/bejne/qWxhpsauosWye9o.html. It's classic, mass-produced with a long lineage and many variations, made famous (and somewhat cliché) by its Apollo moon exploits. More often than not, quote-unquote collectors have one (even I) or have had one at one time. In contrast far less people know the Seiko Guigiaro even exists (kzread.info/dash/bejne/eaKH1ruJgMu-eMY.html) let alone it being the other "Speedmaster" (I didn't before this video) or plan to have one in their collection. So, especially when compared with the Omega and personified by its shape, it's eclectic. My longwinded 2c :)
Finally I have a watch that is featured in a TW --- the 45KS that is, which I also bought last year in Ginza
it's always the artists and designers on this show with the most thoughtfully curated collections
That Ralph Lauren with Piaget movement is incredible
MIH watch rocks! :) Nice chat guys!
This has to be the most interesting collection this show has ever featured.
Fuck this is a good one! Such a balanced and varied collection!
Es muy acertado utilizar el idioma japones en su serie talking watches. Japón es tan importante como Suiza en la historia de la relojeria. Enhorabuena.
Mr. Hida seems like a pretty cool guy with lots of fun "watch world" stories to tell. I love how his passion for horology reflects on his brand. A Naoya Hida is in my dream watch list.
Solid collection with a solid collector!
Really enjoyed this episode. It's always nice to listen to passionate people taking about the things they love.
Best and most thought out collection of the series - delightful to watch
I'm so glad to see no Rolex.
What a humble man!
Humble Guy.
This is so good. I was already going to comment this before he got on board with the KS at the end, and then it really made it top quality for me. Love that Seiko era and how the KS and GS used to compete back then, but we only hear about one now so the value proposition on the names of the vintage watches is so different. I'm at a completely different spot in watch collecting than him but he made my Seikomatic-P feel amazing at the end of this pleasantly Rolex free Talking Watches. More thoughtful vids like this please.
Love this and hope to see many, many, many more Japanese episodes.
Brilliant! I think this might be my favourite episode. A true personal, meaningful and diverse collection reflecting someone's evolution of interests over time, and not a Royal Oak or Submariner in sight ;)
Great episode, hopefully we see more Talking Watches from Japan.
These are beautiful watches. Thanks for the interview.
Excellent video, always interesting to hear the perspectives and choices of people who know their chops.
62 dislikes are from Rolex employees.
Really enjoyed this. A really interesting collection and I thought the interviewer was perfect.
Sick collection. There isn't a watch he has that I would enjoy wearing. They are all incredibly balanced, well thought out, beautiful (or fun) and have an incredible story. I was at Chaux-Du-Fond and somehow missed out on that watch... now it is a huge museum and I spent 6 hours there and still didn't get a chance to take it all in, so I am not totally surprised, but I definitely want that MIH watch now!
after seeing so many talking watches, seems like watchmakers love Ebel. the founder of MB&F also has one
I would love 1000 more talking watches episodes please
Great. One day I hope to be able to buy one of his watches.
Loved this. Thank you.
That Ebel is such an underrated design, really refined for such a masculine design with exposed screws.
Finally a good episode of talking watches.
“The King seiko is not as sought after.” I want to know where this guy buys seikos hahaha
fantastic collection ..really classy and sought after
Great watches, great knowledge and great inspiration
The story of how he used to change watches when he was at the shows reminded me of Wei Koh, i feel like i remember him doing the same during the many interviews he did with Revolution Watch
such a unique collection, love it

Agree with lots of the sentiment on here...really refreshing to see an interesting and well considered collection - much like the episodes with David Williams, Phil Toledano, David Daniel Dae Kim, Jeff Stein, Fred Savage etc. the passion and genuine love for the craft of watch making just oozes out. It's a r nice change from the often crass parade of unobtainium (Goldberger, gets pass just for picking up a cheese knife, wiping it on his sleeve and popping the case back of a rare and valuable vintage piece - masterful insouciance). Maybe I'm biased as I have finally lived to see the day when three watches I own feature on one episode of Talking Watches, but, Hodinkee, please, please do more like this. It's unpredictability and thoughtful consideration make it so much more enjoyable and interesting. Your viewers will thank you. Leave the gauche nonsense to the undisputed heavyweight champ of watch trash, Producer Michael.
Elegant collection
Please do a video on Kimura Takuya’s watch collection, he’s a huge name in Japan and his watch collection is untouchable.

Anyone know the model # for the King Seiko? Only reason I ask is I want to confirm it actually has a beat rate of 36,000 vph. I have a King Seiko 5246 from the early 1970s and although it says "hi-beat" on the dial, it's 28,800vph, which was a higher beat rate then. The seconds hand on the KS in the video certainly doesn't look like a clean 36,000vph sweep.
