Talking Watches With Julius Randle, All-Star Forward For The New York Knicks

Ойын-сауық

From Rupp Arena in Lexington, Kentucky, to the bright lights of La La Land (alongside the late Laker legend Kobe Bryant) to Madison Square Garden as one of the faces of the New York Knicks, Julius Randle is no stranger to the spotlight. He spent a crucial part of his NBA career in New Orleans, playing with fellow former Wildcat Anthony Davis, who served as a mentor to Randle in terms of the lofty responsibilities that come with being a franchise player. But in addition to basketball advice, Davis set Randle on a new trajectory - that of a watch collector.

The purple dial? There's actually no diamonds on it, just a "frosted" finish they get by hammering the metal!

I was initially expecting a dull chapter when I saw the list of watches, but I ended up thoroughly enjoying it. I greatly admire Randle, a humble watch collector. His deep connection to his watches, viewing them as integral parts of his life, and the meaningful memories they hold is truly inspiring.

I think more interesting than the pieces (that we’ve all seen) are the stories behind each piece, the love for collecting and actually wearing them. Unless it’s a piece unique, we’ve all seen these. Doubtful a celebrity or athlete is going to have a $700 PRX or Baltic so no surprise what they pick. Seems like a genuine guy!

Some righteous people in the comments that know better, knocking the guy and his collection. So what if they're hype pieces, they are his pleasure. Snobs. Hodinkee released a great video yesterday with Ben and John talking about Patek, I had to pause it a few times to look up the references. Both vids were enjoyable for different reasons. Lift the man up for his success, don't comment if it's negative, it's a reflection of you, and your sad little lives.

Agree with you. We, on this channel, all have this hobby in common and we should be happy for him. I loved the stories behind each piece. These watches are absolutely stunning, and he wants to better understand how they are made.. He is willing to go to Le Brassus to learn about the brand, the craftsmanship.. You can’t say that he’s not an enthusiast. Is he going to buy other brands in 5 years? Maybe.. people’s tastes change and it’s fine 😊

I own A LOT of different brands like GS, Seiko, Baume & Mercier, Mido, Citizen, Hamilton, Luminox, Bulova, Alpina, Orient and several microbrands but I also have a few Invictas that i wear to work so I don't have to worry about damaging my higher end pieces. Buy what you can afford and like, YOU'RE wearing the watch not the people who have nothing nice to say

If there is one thing I could communicate to these athletes is yes, the Swiss are well known for their craftsmanship and ultimately, we pick what we like/see, it is like everything in life. However, putting aside the prestige of each popular Swiss brand, it could be A.P, Patek, Richarde Mille, Vacheron, Lange etc They all differ in one way or another but what they all have in common is technicality. I say appreciate what is on the outside but every now and then, take some time out to appreciate the intangible aspects such as AP using a historical calibre from JLC and now producing it in house or the history of Patek; how Stern Frere was a dial manufacturer for the house and has adopted it, leading it to be one of the oldest independent brands, how the brand is well known for some of its innovation and hyper classic distinctive design language etc There is so much horology trivia in these items that we must always revisit academic material and remind ourselves of the intricate side of watch making. This is the main reason Hodinkee crowd have frowned upon athletes and the uber rich talking about watches.

I collect swiss watches, really quirky ones and I mostly collect soviet tool watches. Every collector has their own budget and tastes. sometimes, budgets will affect tastes. therefore, a wealthy athlete purchasing some of the most expensive commercial pieces is not to be frowned upon. I am here for the stories, educated collectors is what speaks to me not the watches. Hodinkee audience which I grew up with, I am slowly separating myself from you/them because when a collector does not own quirky entry level watches or classic Pateks, they are not worthy. Collectors grow up eventually and learn. hodinkee should in my opinion, look into the hype pieces and educate ppl why they should be buying them. the other day, I sat down and explained to a Rolex collector what should be their main reason for purchasing a Rolex, simple, effective engineering and years of perfection in and out, it's not just about the bling. Guys lets please support collectors and help educate whenever we can, rather than hate on someone for wearing an RM, which are also very great pieces of Horology if you look past the marketing,

Both, collecting watches is an objective, personal thing. Personally, I can’t afford any hype, ultra expensive watches but I’m not that critical of those people who can and have these type of watches, they can afford it. I appreciate it even more because in this case Julius seems genuinely passionate about watches and I love that many of his watches have dings & battles scars. Respect.

I should have known there'd be a bunch of negativity in the comments. Rich rock musician buys Rolex, AP, and Patek? Everyone fawns over them. Athlete does the same? "Boring, no taste". Hmmm.... I thought this was an enjoyable episode, and you certainly can't accuse Julius Randle of babying his watches or even simply bringing only the most hype pieces - I see plenty of sneering at the Datejust in watch discussions but his clearly holds a lot of personal meaning. I might not have an AP, but did a similar trip to Italy (minus Rome) and my SKX is the featured watch in those memories :)
