Talking to Kids About Their Autism Diagnosis
Over the years being a mom to four autistic kids I've had a little bit of experience telling kids that they are autistic and explaining that diagnosis to them. Today I share a little bit of what that has been like in case it can help anyone else out there.
Welcome to Someday I'll Sleep Autism Vlogs! We talk a lot about autism around here because as a family with four kids and one mom on the autism spectrum we believe that autism acceptance is extremely important. We also post family vlogs daily, about our lives. You'll get glimpses of what's going on at the moment in our lives, usually in a little town in Michigan, or in the city that Paul works in and where we have about a million therapy sessions each week.
This schedule isn't super strict but generally I am trying to stick to it:
Monday- Autism Sit Down Video focusing on Parenting and Autistic Kids
Tuesday- Day in the Life
Wednesday- Fun Activity with the Kids
Thursday- Day in the Life
Friday- Adult Autistic Perspective Sit Down Videos
Saturday- Day Off or News Videos (or sometimes random videos!)
Sunday- other (random, depends on what's going on)
We are a family of 7, with a Mom named Cammie and a Dad named Paul. Sadie is 11, Maggie is 9, Patrick is 7, James is 5, and Tessie is now 3!

Glad Patrick has his brother to get into Pokemon with. It's nice to have something to share like that.
I’m going to the psychiatrist tomorrow to get evaluated for ADHD. I’m in my 20s and a female. I think I’m going to throw a party if I get diagnosed because then I can get help. (I think my boss will also throw a party if I go on medication. I’m a teacher and my lesson plans and classroom are so messy and I forget about everything. But I’m happy I work somewhere so supportive. I have other diagnosis and it’s hard being a teacher but my school is so supportive of me) I feel proud to be a neuro diverse teacher.
I love those reactions when they found or why they are so different.

Me and my siblings except my older sister love Pokemon. 😊😊😊 Like I have no joke a Pokemon bed set in my house
I was diagnosed old enough to be told myself from the professionals but this is an amazing video I love your sons reaction 💖
I wasn’t identified as autistic until I was 31, in 2002, but I had other issues that put me in special education such as dyslexia and dyspraxia though it was called something else then. Just last month diagnosed with ADHD so I’m a full AuDHD with other things including aphantasia, another thing I didn’t know was unusual until recently. I know this is an old video. My parents didn’t try to hide things from me as a kid, and that was certainly the best thing, not that my speech issues and poor motor planning could remotely be unrecognized by me and everyone else. Being straight with your kids in such matters is the most respectful thing you can do, and I applaud you for that.
My mom thought getting me an autism diagnosis as a kid would have destroyed my self esteem even though she shamed my autistic traits. Discovering my autism as a young adult saved my life!
