Australia’s relations with China are at a new low after the formation of Aukus, a new security pact Canberra has made with the US and the UK - widely seen as an alliance to confront Beijing. In the second episode of Talking Post, SCMP chief news editor Yonden Lhatoo speaks with Kevin Rudd, former Australian prime minister and now head of the Asia Society global think tank. They discuss what Aukus means for the region and how it factors into the risk of war between China and a US-led Western alliance.

@@springmustend4853 The Chinese have more rights than people in many democracies. At least, they don't have to be homeless or go without food. Their poor even get free houses or otherwise highly subsidised. Their government don't give them a vote and do nothing when they become homeless and forced to live by the streets in tentages. If this is the human right you mean, it's a farce really. Human rights should guarantee decent living at the minimum. Stop bragging.

The “universal declaration of human rights” was decided and signed by everyone. China has not eradicated poverty, they just lowered the bar for what counts as poverty. Countries like Taiwan and the Netherlands on the other hand, nearly have. And they’re democracies. As expected,Kevin was not honest in his replies. Regarding the changes in Chinese posture in Asia, he purposely left out the main change which was the dramatic growth of China which threatens to overtake the US alarming the West to take action collectively to stop it.As for Australia and other Western countries raising the issue of human rights against China as they are just honouring the Human Rights Convention, then why are they so quiet when the US helped Saudi Arabia to bomb Yemen to pieces,Israeli oppression of Palestinians, his own soldiers slitting throats of Iraqi children, UK refusing to return Chagos Islands to Mauritius despite ruling by the International Court and many others. Come on,Kevin,be brutally honest. The West is hardly bothered with human rights but are just using it as a pretext to abuse China.

First of all Taiwan is a (former Republic of China) is a part of China mainland. Second one is China is facing so many different types of difficulties created by United States of America I guaranteed if these things continuously happened for years then China will give a strong reply to USA without a single war and after that USA will be surprised by Chinese attacks (Excluding war). The third one is after a trade war held between America and China both sides suffering losses specially America facing more losses. Because the 05 objectives of trade war was- 01-To decrease the import of Goods&Services from China and Increase the Export. But America was failed in this aspect. 02-To increase the price of Chinese goods&services and make American goods cheaper infront of them but the result is opposite. 03-To reduce the chances of security risk through Chinese goods and services but Here also America failed. 04-To diversify the American companies from Chinese markets but except some Companies majority of American and other one is choose to stay in China. 05-To increase employment in America but the result has come to inverse of this also. So finally how America has been Won and China loose the trade war? The winner is The people's republic of China not The United States of America.

@@chubasco8647 To say that Hong Kong and Taiwan are assets but to label the people liabilities is a bit too harsh and out of touch. China should never allow its sons and daughters to go against the motherland on Chinese soil. Lee Teng-hui since 1988 changed history and literature textbooks in Taiwan to poison the younger generation into believing they were different from Chinese mainlanders. Successive governments, from Chen Shui-bian, Ma Ying-jeou to Tsai Ing-wen, continued the political indoctrination through education to cut off the bloodline connection between Taiwan and China. Ma Ying-jeou won the 2008 presidential election with a majority mandate but he never attempted to rescind the textbook changes in his 8 years in office. This period in Taiwan history took a similar resemblance to the teachings by the colonial government in Hong Kong under British rules where Hong Kong youngsters were taught about human rights, personal freedom and the rights to choose, among others, which erupted into mass protests in 2019-2020 for freedom and Hong Kong independence when the fuse was ignited by foreign powers. Imperialists always sowed seeds of discontents through education in order to retain some forms of influence when they finally leave. The Hong Kong SAR government could have easily permitted all 3 million British National (Overseas) passport holders to migrate to Britain if they wished. However, China didn't allow that simply because the Chinese leaders don't want to abandon the majority of their citizens due to some mistakes not of their own making. My argument relates to the kindness to bestow upon the Chinese people on both Hong Kong and Taiwan.

Kevin Rudd, yet another thoroughly affordable mouthpiece. A more accurate analysis of intentions could be made comparing their military capabilities. The incredibly expensive US military is bristling with long-range attack capability with its nuclear carriers, subs, missiles and long-range bombers. Apart from enough ballistic missiles to ensure mutual destruction should some war-monger in the pentagon press the button, China has little or no long-range capability. Their military is bristling with far less expensive and probably much more effective defensive capability. Who wants to go halfway around the world attacking people and who doesn't? Who makes money out of war-mongering and been in an almost constant state of war since WWII as their economy collapses? Who hasn't been at war for 70 years and has a rapidly growing economy? War is hugely profitable for a very few but disastrous for the many. Peace is economically superior in every way for everyone.

He just wondering around parroting the same narrative as reported in the western press, of broken promise not to militarise the island, of the dispute with Japan and India. He conveniently overlook the fact that US did not accept China’s proposal, that Japan move to nationalise the Island breaking a promise with China, and India’s aggressive actions at the border.

Truth is, despite China's military power now, if the ruling party in Taiwan cross the line by creating de facto independence, China will take action no matter the cost. The primary consideration on mainland China side is on how to govern Taiwan if the takeover is through military action, instead of whether military is strong enough, or what cost of military action is. Kevin should know this well...disappointed

Fundamental point from Kevin Rudd that is flawed in his chain of argument however, is his focus on analyzing the so called change being the job of a strategic analysis. It sounds fancy, but for me, assessment of change is much more tactical than strategical. 1) strategy requires depiction of vision and direction 2) understanding change can be interpreted in so many layers and differs in different perceptions. I was expecting a much more insightful exposition of what's happening than merely recounting what's happened in terms of changes that have occurred. A truly insightful discourse would require him to take sides, to argue the rights and wrongs or mistakes with these changes. But he took pains to skirt over that path. Worse, he presented those changes in a way that would leave his hearer with the distinct impression of wrong by China, and by inference nothing wrong by the opposing forces.

I am truly shocked that he addressed that Hong Kong crisis as human rights issue rather than a threat to China's sovereignty from a section of the Hong Kong people who worked with foreigner powers to detach Hong Kong from China's reign. There were allegedly more than 1000 CIA agents working behind the protestors at the time of the chaos. But they have all fled immediately to Taiwan after the introduction of the National Security Law. Can this be a human rights issue? The people he talked about were not innocent. They were traitors. Rudd shows his political bias by mentioning China's promise not to militarize the islands it made in the South China Sea, but hopes that no one knows enough to point out that, after that promise was made, the U.S. started sending lots of warships to their shores and even sending bombers almost directly overhead in order to threaten the troops stationed there. This forced the PLA to militarize the islands in order to protect themselves, and it is the reason why warships and bombers no longer visit those islands. Next, he claims that it is China which altered the conditions at the Line of Actual Control (LAC) with India. This is obviously false. Even western media companies, like the National Post, reported how Chinese commanders immediately agreed to and implemented a removal of forces from the LAC upon an agreement that Indian troops would do the same. Then, as they were leaving, 55+ Indian troops immediately broke the agreement and crossed the LAC (proportedly to "check" to see if the Chinese troops were keeping their word); and when they encountered the Chinese supplies and tents, they immediately started lighting them on fire. This led to the clash at the Galwan Valley, which caused the deaths of 4 Chinese soldiers and 20 Indian soldiers in hand-to-hand combat. Rudd is obviously a U.S. propagandist in the guise of a neutral analyst.

Could conflict between China and the West be avoided if the Taiwanese people, for those so inclined, were allowed to migrate on mass to Australia and possibly other countries? After all, Australia needs to grow its population for developmental reasons. I support the One-China policy and recognise that some Taiwanese are happy to accept mainland rule while others are not. For those that are not, they should have the option of leaving Taiwan for Australia, or somewhere else, especially if that will help prevent conflict between China and the West. The US will not defend Taiwan because it supports the One China policy which means it recognises the territory of the former as being an indivisible part of China. This means the US believes that China is not committing an act of aggression against an independent or foreign nation by asserting its authority over the island. So, the question becomes, what chance have the Taiwanese got in a fight against its vastly larger and better-armed neighbour? The outcome is obvious and so it is really a matter of saving as many lives as possible that is the real issue here. That can be achieved by allowing those who do not wish to live under the rule of the Communist Party to leave and become citizens of some other democracy, such as Australia. Upholding Chinese sovereignty does not have to result in a massive loss of life on both sides of the Taiwan Strait in a military conflict that would also result in significant material destruction and environmental damage to both sides, and to any other nations choosing to involve themselves. A peaceful outcome that is in line with the beliefs of the democracies of this world concerning the sanctity of human life can be achieved in a manner consistent with allowing the democratic aspirations of the Taiwanese to live on, all be it, in another country or countries who are similarly committed to the same way of life. There does not have to be armed conflict between the West and China. There is another way to resolve the Taiwanese matter.

Kevin Rudd forgetting a simple fact is that who initiated those changes? Yes, China changed because someone change first and China has to respond to that status change. Japan first announced that the island is privately owned by Japan which this started the change. Philippines sent a sinking boat with soldiers onboard in order to station on those islands which China has to respond. India has crossed the agreed ceased line for the first time in years, which caused China to respond. All of these changes came when Obama said US will rebalance their forces and station heavier might in Asia. So who is the one that instigated these?

Kevin Rudd, the former prime minister of Australia, is trying to project a view that his views are impartial and objective. The listener must understand that he lives in Australia and the Americans and the current Australian gomen had turned the whole of Australia against China, he cannot afford to stick out as a sore thumb. Whether he likes it or not, he has to live in Australia and he needs friends in Australia. What is worse is Kevin's daughter in law is a Chinese, though not a Chinese National. So don't expect Kevin Rudd to say that what China did was in response to what US is doing all the while. I find it futile to interview Kevin Rudd any more as his reply is very standard. If you want to listen to a truly un-bias opinion talk to someone who is not an Australian or an American or anyone who lives in the 5 Eyes.
