Talking Pianos + Playing Mozart with Steinway CEO Ron Losby | Tiffany Vlogs

Why are Steinway pianos so expensive? New York or Hamburg? What about digital pianos?
Special thanks to Steinway's CEO Ron Losby and his team for making this special 100th vlog possible. To have started from the outside of a closed Steinway Hall to chatting and playing Mozart with Mr. Losby was a special milestone for me. Thank you all for being with me.

I remember walking into a Steinway store in Tokyo, they let me play and listen to the sound as much as I liked. I honestly told them I am not a paying customer now, but would love to get one when I am older, and the staff told me, the store is exactly the place for people like me. He said, it is enough for me to hear and fall in love with the sound and the craft that goes into it. They were extremely nice even though I am not a professional pianist but merely a enthusiast. Really appreciate their hospitality and made me like the brand even more.

What you thought was right. Human yes, genuine no. Just their remarks about digital pianoes, which are a huge threat to acoustic manufacturing but not to music!!, unfortunately reveal that. I dont know so many not wealthy people being able to afford an acoustic grand:) Yeah if you are concert pianist or are either supported by a manufacturer or over many years take a loan, then maybe. But the many people who are jsut under the level of concert pianists, like the CEO himself, they could have benefitted with lower prices. I know the philosophy. We at Steinway need being able to communicate with wealthy people or famous concert pianists, why we need to show off in an equivalent standard. Well:)

@@solbriller1 Rubbish. Handcrafted instruments made from the best materials and methods cost a bomb to produce. If you want cheap then get robot / cnc made synthetic stuff. All the hands on craftsmen from the timber getter to the final regulator deserve a descent living wage commensurate with the skillset and contribute significantly to the cost of a Steinway. BTW Steinway have endorsed Pianoteq modeled software pianos. Go and buy an Steinway Essex or Boston

@@PeterWalkerHP16c Neither of the last two commentators are wrong, Steinway is not responsible for the consequences of mass production that have devitalized and caused the extinction of efficient and masterful woodworking. Steinway uses plenty of automated machinery in their workshops but they stop at every step to verify every piece by hand which is an very inefficient process to build a high quality piano. 1 year to build a high quality piano, it's way too long. Back when Pleyel had his factory in Paris in 1820 his workers were virtuosi of woodworking. They built masterful instruments in only a few months. The difference is they understood woodworking and how woodworking relates to the building of an instrument. Today i don't think they do, they just think that "perfection" is getting parts cut to 0.00000 accuracy and completely lost touch with music making. They follow an old proven blueprint recipe of making a steinway very rigidly but certainly do not understand the possibilities and ecosystem of woodworking. But that is due to the dissapearance of high quality furniture and carpenters too. A good analogy would be a meticulous scientist who does not know the culinary art of cooking but was given a successful recipe and is following it with scientific accuracy (very ineficiently too as a result) and sure enough the result is a milionth steinway piano that sounds like a Steinway. And cost a fortune because it's build with rocket ship approach instead of by a group of highly prolific and talented woodworkers.

To link tooth brush, piano, and classical music in the same sentence and let people smile about it while brushing their teeth is quite an achievement. Whether it is giving your fans musical tips or bringing them along while "vlogging" , you give them your philosophical insight. For example, the "duckee philosophy" for reducing stress; the "squirrel philosophy" for keeping a cheerful attitude; the "little stuff animal philosophy" for keeping inner calm and forgetting about isolation; the "personalizing practice piano philosophy" for bringing out the inner affection and emotion while doing sometime dreadful practice. These are just a few examples. You have no idea how far reaching your influence is. God bless.

Johannes Ostenfeld-Rosenthal Sorry, i already wrote that one time here, but vey relevant to your comment:) I might be very critical, but then thats it. We can not all be only positive. My attention was at the beginning of the vlog where you use philosophy to argue for your mix of classical piano and vlogs. The missing human connection as you refer to. It has always been like that and the great artists has always communicated the interesting, namely their amazing interpretations and skills. So when you speak about the music being more interesting (the way i understand it) by a larger human interaction, that would be truth if it went both ways. It does not. What you eat or think or how you look or do - does NOT make the music better. The effect is a commercial for your self, nothing else, because you have an obvious talent about documenting or making documentaries. So - people like you and by that your playing. That does not make you and your interpretations better. I also see your arguing as indirectly supporting the idea about: pay, then you get more of me. The superficial social media trend i am afraid. So - the tooth brush is interesting when its in my mouth, not when something i watch in a vlog:) The CEO and Steinway - well yes. Not actually interesting as they are not the best today, where prices differ far too much from the best digital instruments that today directly can compete with the most expensive concert grands to a maybe 1/20 of the price. And now we are at it: digital pianos. Qutes here from Tiffany and understandandable from the CEO at Steinway. They have no soul, they sound wrong and you have no connection with them. Nonsense. In 95 % of comparing they sound far better, some Steinways sound directly awfull and then acoustics are mostly out of tune . I sat at a Steinway Dealer in Denmark, that also sell digital pianos 4 years ago. There was a Roland LX 15, now 3 years later both the LX 17 and now today an even better model. With 8 special designed loudspekers for best possible result. They are not trying to make the acoustic sound. They take the best there and makes it better. It sounded far better than any of the present acoustics including Steinways, Kawais and others and was far more easy to control. Both the repeats and the dynamics. With rich overtones and the acoustic elements present that you can even regulate your self making your own sound. So saying that loudspeakers and sound moduling systems today are without soul and no contact, makes it directly embarrassing for the people present talking. Your motives are too obvious. You Tiffany are supported by Steinway and Steinway and the acoustic piano producers are kind of desperate - it does not sound right or honest at all. Dont you think that advanced producers with todays technology can make soul or sound?? :) I am sorry to say so. I challenge eventual readers here that are not tied up on money. Try for your self. Go and make a comparison. You will be happy to see that i am right at the same time you get always tuned instruments with your own sound, which you can make with the high ends like the Roland Then there is Bösendorfer, Fazioli, Yamaha, Kawai and some other amazing acoustics too which are more or less in the same quality as Steinway (The brands all are too expensive) And here i talk about the provision to the factory and the dealers. Around 50%. Thats not fair to the musicians who would have the possibilty to be a real artist on a quality instrument. So lets kindly forget the CEO's touching words. We are here for and because of the artists. I seriously doubt that. Personally that does not matter to me, but i have thought it many times. Hard words here, but i think needed. You are a talented pianist in the high end Tiffany. Which is the most important. You or the music i might ask? I respect the piano maker tradition and the music it has made possible. I love it!! But today they have been competed out. And will be even more in the future. No soul, no contact, sounding wrong:)) Sorry i laugh here. Btw i am NOT a Roland agent or sell digital pianoes. I just love music, for everybody also performing artists. A few high end igital pianoes could replace every Steinway in any concert hall with even better result. The conductor and pianist could get just the sound, responsiveness - and soul they wanted! Not an instrument that the artist probably not like or that is out of tune after the break. Horowitz who could afford it, broght his own grand to concerts by the same reason. The future digitals will probably be even better - about the design only the fantasy set the limits:)

Your comment is out of context. Electronic music has plenty of soul. The problem is digital pianos, trying to mimmic acoustic ones and failing miserably ( Roland RD2000, or Yamaha CP5 or Kawaii GrandPiano). The reasons are easy to explain. But be afraid Steinway, because if you look at what happened with film photography it was made obsolete in only about 20 years by digital photography. The same threat exist on the acoustic piano.

@@solbriller1 I respect your argument and agree with many of your points. However, I would just like to point out that, owning an electronic piano and a real piano myself, the touch and feel of the two are vastly different, and there are indeed techniques that cannot be accurately replicated on an electronic piano. In addition, the electronic piano sounds extremely cold and "souless" when playing slower, quieter, more emotional pieces. By this, I mean that digital pianos do not accurately reflect the softness of notes that a real piano can show. Indeed, pressing down gently on a digital piano yields a quieter sound, but it is in the same pitch as the note would be if played with much strength. On a piano, you can create unique sounds by playing with different forces and techniques, on an electronic piano, you can only create the same sound at different volumes.

@@crazyworldwelivein349 it's all dependent on the recording of the digital sound, if you have 5 samples per note, you will not get the same dynamic range as a real piano of course, but there are digital piano libraries with millions of samples for 1 single piano, at that point it starts to become difficult to hear the difference. In regards to the feel, that too can be mimicked down to the minute detail, and even changed to your liking on some digital pianos.. But those things cost money, so if you want all of this in a digital piano today, you might as well buy a real piano.. But give it time...

He took quite a risk playing alongside you and did a great job, so all respect to him for doing so. Listening to your performance and contrasting your pianistic styles I could not help thinking it was rather like watching ‘two horses being ridden along the same path’ the left one being ‘older and more stately’ and the other ‘a young filly’, agile and full of energy. Thanks for the "toothbrush" trope. Although the Japanese concept of "mottainai" has been sort of co-opted in a way by the environmental movement, it embodies what you mean about appreciating the full experience of the toothbrush. Co-founder of Sony, Akio Morita, many years taught me that mottainai suggests a full appreciation for the "thing." I preach to people about the paper napkin -- to fully appreciate this object, you must appreciate the forest that nurtured a tree that enabled the paper of the napkin. You must appreciate the humans who harvested, transported, processed the wood that became that napkin. You must appreciate the education of the people who designed and created the machinery/tools that enabled the processing of that raw material into a napkin. You have to appreciate the labor of those who transported the napkin to a place where it was accessible to you -- not only those folks, but the families who support those folks. Obviously, the list goes on. We are connected to every aspect of this world; the appreciation of it is ours to embrace. I appreciate the wholeness of the Internet that brought you to me. Thank you!!

No words to express how much I absolutely loved this vlog! It’s rare sometimes to have a CEO of a piano company to be such an accomplished pianist himself. It is more common to find an individual who is a great businessman but Mr. Losby appears passionate and well-versed in both. It was such an honest and straightforward Q & A. I truly enjoyed the Mozart for 4 hands-what a treat and fantastic way to conclude this vlog. As I have been a long-time fan of Steinway, to listen to his answers to the various questions about the history and continued quality of their instruments was fascinating. One interesting point was about not compromise the quality to keep the same selling price. Another was his take on the digital piano. A third was one day being able to play on my piano and having it broadcasted on was having a close relationship with the piano thus humanizing the relationship and lastly he agreed that ultimately we all need to find what we’re passionate about and do that because at the end of the day, money can only bring happiness to a certain extent. It is the passion that keeps us going, that keeps us striving, as you always remind us to do. Thank you for doing this great vlog!!!

Congratulations on 100 vlogs! You’ve done, and continue to do, such a wonderful work in promoting/making accessible the classical music arts. Loved the interview! Thank you to Ron Losby for sharing his time and encouraging us. Thank you, Tiffany, for an enjoyable 💯. It was really cool how you did a quick flip through the previous 99. Fun! And it’s amazing to think that 200k subscribers is around the corner :)

Usually not with mass produced items like toothbrushes, but definitely with individual works of art including including gourmet food, wine, whisky, beer, tea etc... as well as hand crafted items e.g. musical instruments. Also, love the question about pianos of the future. I've love reading about and listening to its development from even the earliest hammered dulcimers. Really love reading about the types of pianos some of the great composers (Sweelinck, Buxtehude, Scarlatti, Bach, Mozart, Beethoven, Brahms, Chopin, Debussy, Bartok, Rach, Jelly Roll Morton, Ellington, Cowell, Cage, Carter etc...) played on.

Fantastic vlog! I really like how you have been thinking about the human element of piano and music (and other things too). I also agree that in spite of - or perhaps because of - the advance of technology, the human element of everything will become more and more important. Perhaps the future of music is back to the good old days where playing music was much more common and something many, many people did. It's not easy when just listening has become so much easier, but it's something to aspire to! I hope this will be a topic you'll cover more in the future! Congrats on your 100th vlog!
