In the morning my voice is “normal”, but by night the bottom drops out and it’s actually relaxing on my voice to talk down there as well.

Same here. Whenever I get off of work in the early morning, my relaxed speaking voice will drop to around Bb1-C2, but reside around D2-E2 on the bottom during the peak working hours.

Don't judge a book by its cover = don't judge any singer based on their speaking voice . :) Although I am a bass with a rather deep natural voice, I have been purposely talking "higher" pretty much since my voice dropped many decades ago because it was easier for people to hear, but when i relax more and don't think about it, it often drops to a more comfortable natural voice spot without even realizing it, and thankfully over the years, teaching, presentations, theatre, singing or trying to carry a tune, narrating, voice over, and voice acting, all helped me learn to project it better when i do speak in a more natural comfortable range, so its like i have multiple natural comfortable speaking voice ranges to some extent, but i don't and won't purposely make an effort to go to the absolute bottom and stay there for no good reason, for those same reasons your vocal coach told you and you shared here. Good job yet again good sir. Stay safe and stay awesome. 👍👍🙃✌️

True. Speaking in the lowest part of your voice leads to exhaustion and lack of volume due to little to no projection. Made the rookie error of trying to speak low all the time when my voice changed. Now , I'm trying to speak at the more natural pitch.

Avi Kaplan said that he has to talk higher because it was hard for anyone to hear him clearly when he talks in his lower register. It must be the way that the tone vibrates and how the ear can pick up the sounds.

It is true ..when you gotta a low voice , it is annoying to repeat everything you say because people can not heard you 😒 but when you are in closed room and you start speaking how you like to speak ..it is always a suprise for them 🤣 but it is exosting for your vocal cords to always speaking in higher register .. gretting from croatia 👊🍻😎

@@UnityCZ maybe it's because they're bass Baritones in general there's nothing wrong with being a Bass Baritone they still are basses unlike opera voice teachers who try to claim they are Baritones. Not to mention there's plenty of Bass Baritones or Bass cantante that can go as low as profundos maybe not octavists but the problem Bass singers need to understand the more you utilize the low notes the less important you'll be to a group unless your interested in quartet singing. Non traditional choirs won't hire basses because it's too much work to balance out that much sonic space with other voice parts. Your better off becoming a better overall singer like kaplan or foust than to focus too much on low notes. It may sound cool for solos but in a context of songs you won't get that much recognition for solo work in music.

@Diego Mendivil well I would agree with you friend but unfortunately to truly be a Bass according to "Experts" they say to be a true Bass you have to sing comfortable near G1 and that's where the fach should be found around placement you and I both know that as basses you can still be a bass singing near G2 but not according to vocal coaches they consider that the Baritone register. I just think we need to stop making sub category groups because a Bass Baritone is no where a Baritone in sound or pitch but people believe they are but they are not. Because according to music theory w true Baritone should have no problem singing second tenor parts near first tenors. So a true bass singer sounds nothing like a Baritone. Most basses can only belch an E4 untrained. What I believe is this if you can sing resonant around an A1 or G1 your aa bass. If you can sing those notes in chest that's puts you in another voice category.

@Diego Mendivil I guess you can consider vocal coaches to be incorrect which I figured. Because I'm a Bass Baritone and I can sing in the same register as kaplan. That why I don't like taking vocal lessons even Matt Spriggs talks about how vocal teachers miss classify bass singers as Baritones.

Yeah he was super humble describing how he never did any training and still turned out successfully. Training is always good, but focusing on the career part early on is how you really make it. It was interesting reading how such a small fraction of professional musicians are truly supporting themselves fully from music performances alone.

George Younce usually did not speak in an exceptionally lower register. You were given good advice. My voice teacher told me to talk at about 1/3 of my total range above my bottom register. It depends on the situation of course. You certainly don't want to talk at your lowest notes as you could potentially exhaust your voice. Your low talking segment in the video clearly showed you have the natural range to match your singing. George didn't care about impressing anyone with his speaking....he impressed on stage singing!

My lowest note is an F#1 which i can not sing, just reach... My lowest note im able to sing is Bb1 right now (im 21). I speak on C#2-D2, though i can sing up to E4. In your point of view im talking too deep, not at an optimal range, however its my natural, that does not exhaust me. What exhaust me is speaking at the wrong place, i mean speaking from throat...not from the chest. When im watching soccer in a pub and im talking loud in my excitement from the throat, my vocal chords will hurt, at least i feel they dont like what im doing. Actually these times i speak on a higher pitch than usual (Around A2 instead of C-D2)

@@gyetvaimarcell I don't know but possibly speak a bit higher than the C2 but the point is to make sure you are not forcing or pushing your voice lower and fatiguing your voice. Some think a singer has a specific number of times they can sing a certain note at their extremes.

@@alexgfer123 Thanks for your reply, and hope things are well for you in Chile. Too many basses try to "low talk" trying to impress people with how low their voice is. Let your singing do the impressing. According to my teachers the upper part of the lower third of your range. You have to determine that for yourself. For me, it is a bit of a challenge. I have performed a Bb4 and reached a B0 during an Elvis tribute concert so my range can be interesting in determining my speaking register. It is typically much higher than notes I can reach down low which causes some to speculate I fake the low notes but I have carried vibrato down to a D1 so that should dispel those accusations. Just make sure you are not low-talking. Matt Fouch is perfectly on point with this as he is about other things bass singing oriented.

@@richardharristhelowbassman well i agree, pushing is really bad and harmful on the long run. About singing the extremes, i heard it too, but they also said it goes only to the high extremes. Its logical, because low notes needs relaxed, gentle positioning and perfect ajr control, while highs need power and pressure (in a positive way).

Hey Mat, thx for another great video. I actualy watched another video about findingand talking in your natural pitch earlier today. This was by vocalgeek (or singinggeek?). Anyway what she said was the importance of finding the pitch you were most relaxed to avoid fatigue during the day. Still, you made a valid point for us bass-singers, to talk in a pitch were we can be heard better. My natural pitch is around G2-A2, but if i need to talk louder in noisy places pitch goes up. In the age of 47 i restarted my singing after a 20 year break, and your channel has been my best source for bass related info 😊

I have to sometimes make an effort to keep my speaking voice out of sub-bass range, over 60 Hz. so people hear the message and not just the pitch. When I do this, I can use the contra octave for emphasis once in a while. Always catches the listener's attention...

Study Inalare La Voce, or CVTs Curbing or breath stop in general to speak lower with actual projection. In my experience (which is mine and nontrasferable), I found that Inalare La voce actually levels the breath pressure and makes the projection and pitch actually audible in many manners while being healthy (if done properly). But it is my observation and empirical note, do whatever the hell works for yall

I recently found myself getting back to my calling and love with singing with southern gospel. Yes I have been away from the Lord for 20 years. but praise his name I am back were I need to be. "He Made a Change". Any ways I have a very unique vocal range but my comfort zone is bass. My Lows even scare myself. My normal speaking voice is the same as yours. My dream and prayer and if it's God's will I will have the opportunity to join a quartet. My biggest struggle is what microphone to use? Cheap??? Any advice?

Well, I think that in most cases they actually do. I mean if I'm not mistaken, that's a part of what defines this voice type. And actually, not only basses, but most people in general talk in a lower part of their vocal range. Yes, some people can go significantly lower than where they speak (I have some friends who can), but I think that isn't typical for basses. And if it really was this way, that wouldn't be surprising to me, 'cause if they didn't talk using technically their lowest chest notes, how would they be able to project them while singing? At least that's my experience, but maybe I'm wrong.
