WOW, just what I needed, thank you for this tutorial. Started out with leather about a year ago, after a few months I bought a diode laser but not really got a grip on cutting out on it. Probably because it’s hard to find time to learn both leather and laser at the same time 😅 Now it’s late so tomorrow I will download you wallet file and give it a beam in the laser. Oh, also...braided fishing line (I use 60lb to make bowstrings so I had a ton around) comes in ALL sorts of colors, is very cheap, and is literally Dyneema (kevlar like material). It does NOT break, melts nicely on the ends, and comes in varying thicknesses. It also lays down super nice and has a great, unique look.

I only use plain old veg tan leather for my wallets...they turn out beautifully. If you're having issues with smoke or dirt smudges, you'll need to learn how to appropriately clean it. I usually just use water and a soft cloth. The biggest issue I have with veg tan leather is that I wet it to cut it (Neje A40640), and the thinner inside liners can shrink in odd directions when they dry. My solution was to stop cutting the holes in the liners, that way I can simply poke my own holes using the outside holes for the guides. Nice video though, and thanks for sharing.

I would love to know the settings you're using on the Atezr L2 36w machine to cut without leaving soot. I generally use a slightly thicker leather for my wallets, but my L2 just arrived today, and it would give me a great starting point for my testing. Not just cutting but marking too, your logo looks fantastic on those. So far everything I've cut or engraved on my xTool M1 has come out a dirty, sooty mess.

Testing is the only way. I am sure your leather is different than mine. I would start at 30 power and 700 speed and work the up or speed down as you need. Also try air vs no air.

@@ValleyForged thanks. Miine is actually very similar, it's the Wicket & Craig American Vachetta from Buckle Guy. It's about as close to the Italian Vachetta you're using as you can get. At least I have a starting point now. I really had no idea where to even start, so thanks.

is there way to get the leather power guide to test the strength and speed. i just got a creality falcon 2 22w and still testing it out on leather

There are too many variables in my opinion. Testing is the only way. But perhaps someone else may be able to help (Facebook?)

Hi. I bought an Elegoo Phecda 10 W with air assist and try to cut out leather which was 2-3 ounces or 1.6mm max. yet I can not even cut the 1mm cardboard sure I am doing something wrong. I am using the lightburn and checked all parameters and focusing, power speed settings, additionally I am using honeycomb with air assist. did you get a chance to try out the Elegoo Phecda?

@ValleyForged thank you soo much for advice...I will reassemble the Laser and check all the wires and so on ....because 10w is easy to cut 7-8 ounces leather.

Have you worked with pull up leather? I'm using Atomstack X20 Pro, and i can't seem to cut this piece of pull up leather nicely. I tried different settings, even tried doing 100% 300mm/min at 3 passes that almost go through with really bad scorch and charring. This is the first time i work with leather. But I've been working on mdf projects a lot and it works just fine. Is pull up leather not suitable for laser or there's certain factor i'm missing about it? I do want to try vegtan leather, but i'm kinda worried about facing the same issue with vegtan later.

I only use veg tan leather and nothing over 5mm. Even my 10w would do 5mm without issue. I am no expert on this subject, perhaps someone else can help you more.

just want to update, it was purely my mistake. i do maintenance on my laser weekly, and last time i didn't screw my lens tight enough so the power doesn't come out properly. my bad 😅 i also tried veg tan leather and it works great, and pull up leather do work with slightly higher setting than veg tan. but i wouldn't recommend it to laser since it is chrome tanned.

What about marine vinyl with a diode?

Is there anything you can do about the disgusting smell when cutting leather with a laser? I do vent outside but my whole backyard stinks horribly when cutting even just a small piece.

If you have seen my latest video, I build a filter. I will update soon and let you know how it worked for leather. It is a pretty hard small to get rid of.

I would imagine 2mm veg tan should work, but I have not tried.

I have a longer ray5 20w laser i ran a material test was unable to cut 2mm veg in one pass even at 600mm/m 100% power.

That sounds very strange. There are so many factors, so of course I cannot say what the problem is. When I had the very same laser I had no issues doing that.

@@ValleyForged I got it to cut 1000mm/m 80 percent it took 12 passes it still didn't cut it completely free though, finished the cut with blade.

@@ValleyForged last attempt I tried was 600mm/m at 100 percent didn't make it through 2mm leather. scorched. the machine is only 2 months old.

@@dragonshoarddesign3094Well, if your lens is clean, I would start checking the Facebook forums and customer service. Any change in how it is cutting wood? Are you running air?

Is it not possible to mask the leather to keep it clean?

I have found it leaves a little bit on the leather. I would say try it! I still use it for doing color letters etc...

Have you ever tried to wet the leather ?

I have. It worked well for thicker leather that was not dyed for me. But you MUST use distilled water or it can stain it. As for the Italian leather I use, it is not necessary at all. It just seems to work perfectly every time.

I've seen so many different views on whether or not to use a laser on chrome tan leather. But no one ever has evidence to back up the claim to not use lasers in those leathers. I mean if you're inhaling the fumes off of anything I'm sure it's not good... And this is from a former smoker who quit 14 years ago. But those who say chrome tan will, and this was once told to me one time... That using a laser on chrome tan will cause cyanide fumes. I just have a hard time believing the internet myths that are out there! Everyone should be using an extraction fan with lasering ANYTHING!

It is always good to question your assumptions. You may be correct. Look at the pinned comment for an update. I will also make a dedicated video on this subject. I don't completely agree with your assessment on extraction as it is not 100%, but I really appreciate the comment.
