My favorite TH line-up... Adrian Belew adds so much to the proceedings, his backing vocals blend so well with David Byrne. Actually quite similar. If you've never heard his early solo work like Lone Rhino or Twang Bar King, those are great records. And of course his work with King Crimson and Bowie. Dolette McDonald's support vocals are so killings. Nails it every time!!!!

I got to see Belew on solo tour in late ‘89 or early ‘90. Was about six feet from him. Great performer, fantastic musician, fantastic energy in a really small venue. At one point he swung around and the neck of his guitar knocked a mic stand into the keyboard player. One of the best shows I’ve ever been to.

What a difference Adrian Belew makes. I just listened to a live 1982 show sans Adrian Belew, and boy, did I miss his unique, angular, atmospheric lead guitar. Another important quality Adrian adds is onstage energy, theatre, and dancing with Nona.

I was at this gig. I was standing leaning on the barrier at front left in front of guitarist who plays keyboards. There were two stages. When Talking Heads finished, Roxy Music came on. John Lennon had just been killed a few days earlier and they played Jealous Guy for the first time. After that Dire Straits came on and then Mike Oldfield. I was 15 at the time.

@@andrewcounts7136 agreed. David Bryn fucked up big not holding on to Adrian. I was hooked first time I was turned on to the heads . And it was rare at this point to not be the first in my hood to turn on the friends of the next hottest artist to hit big. I should have went straight into picking out who gets air time on the radio... Not bribed or for garbage down peoples throats , then the heard follows. Anyone on subpop liable in , what 83, 84, 85... Copulation CDs... hats off to them. 90 percent winners. But let's get back to Belew. Joining King Crimson hands down in my opinion , along with Bruford, Levine, and off course Mr Robert Fripp unbelievable incredible. I'll never forget back to back nights 86, 87.. on sunset, or Hollywood Blvd Hard Rock Café. Tripping my balls off 3rd row dead crnter.. , could of been 4th row , maybe 5th. Those guys appeard to be having more fun playing than most of the audience listening , Besides me of course. I was commented to about the enjoyment people seeing how much joy spilling out . I was like a high school joy weeping, not missing a beat goosebumps on top of goose bumps from start to finish. My favorite line up. I've seen Fripp over the years , Zappa was outstanding live. Way better than his tracks laid on vinyl, In my opinion. I became you could say, the entertainment planner for the gang I hung with. My phone would start ringing around noon while I'm at work or wherever. Hello I asswered... dude ,where we going tonight.. and where we going to wake up Saturday, what bands are lined up for night... and are we going to be able to be back at work by 6am Monday morning? I'd start laughing ... sleep or no sleep? We can go two different angles. I'd say... rattle off a few band names most unheard of... but I never picked or planned a loser cruise. Oh wait... one evening last minute Matt.. Nothing tonight... The Fix playing 6 flags in Jersey right off I 76.... if we get this van rolling within 30 min... should be able to cat ch the opening act too. Summer 1980. 81.. half the crew my best friend and I along with our stellar unbelievable two wildest and attractive women who happened to be waitresses/ barmaids from outside our town , and they were roommates sharing a apartment together. The perfect senerio. What a fantastic summer..... except that evening I will not understand we never found the place. All of us saying we've seen the 6 flags off ramp signs many times before. .. Maybe it was the weed, acid, being maybe a bit tipsy, or we were just having too much fun enjoying each other's ompany... I know the latter one was true and to this day 43 yrs later I think that had to be the only reason. Back and forth too far go back, passed it... I never saw it ,turn around maybe just a bit further... 4 more exits... noway it's this far . It should have been around 45.. 60 miles were up over 100.. Ain't this far... turn around Now we're all laughing , what do we call this eveng.. bagged it. If we do find the exit heading back to our town outside of Philly... maybe catch last for tunes maybe. Park closes 11.. everyone out by midnight... fuck it... the first looser cruise.... last ditch suggestion.... South steel then the after hrs club... possibly get lucky. But I do not have the entertainment section and haven't a clue where to find one . Cell phones with Google maps would have been nice to have then.

An Other Story, Yep! So in 1980 I watched #THIStm on TV while at Merrell Barracks, Nurnberg, Germany (Hitler's SS Troops, Barracks) -where I lived for two years, while in The ARMY (I was 20, then) and using my drumsticks, THRILLED, I was beating the smack out of my legs playing along with Life During Wartime that night, blasting the thing on my NEW! Giant (Christmas Present) 220 Watt Stereo while recording that show on my Technics Auto-Reverse woopy-do Front-Loading Cassette Tape Player/Recorder, and had listened to THIS™ Show on many occasions during the 1980's. Later, returning to Los Angeles, Me and 4 friends bought tickets to The Pantages Theater for Stop Making Sense on The Day of The Show -of which we all had (purple barrel) Mescaline to enhance the amazing production! I personally have an appreciative outlook toward Talking Heads, especially Brian Eno, because I was one of the few people I've ever met who actually owned My Life In The Bush Of Ghosts Album and completely dug its essence (liek, I would play "Regiment") and blast my speakers out the window, and down toward the Chow Hall below, and the black dudes would break into auto-dance, not even looking up to see what was the source of the music influence causing them to dance).. (a trip memory I have).. I'd never investigated, or perhaps overlooked Adrian's Guitar Parts on The Remain in Light LP... The Great Curve and Crosseyed and Painless, until my dead heroin friend Gerry grilled me saying "Yeah, ain't it obvious..!" I must've listened to Remain in Light A 1000 times in my 1970's VW Bus during The 80's. So, for me, got no sarcasm here, no dissing of Byrne's Favorable Convictions. I love Tina's Bass on Great Curve and Adrian Elevates -no doubt in my mind (where there's a party, -all the time).. thanks David.☮

When I was in high school, 1979-1980 , I was just barely waking up to "punk / new wave/ what-ever-you-call-it " music . I think I knew the Ramones -- and that was it. A friend of mine said to me "There's this band called the Talking Heads; and they do this song called Psycho Killer". I was totally fascinated that a band - would call a song "Psycho Killer". My brian - just ran with the idea of what this song would sound like ; a snarling scary LOUD distorted punk song with bloody violent lyrics ( not too far off from the Sex Pistols singing happily about a serial killer or something) . My friend was like "No, it's not what you think it's gonna be". LOL. Around this same time , the Talking Heads (fresh off Fear of Music ) were touring with the barely known B-52s as their warm up act! And they played at our local college ; Stony Brook University . I was so sorry to be too late to the game ! If I could choose my personal favorite time to go back and see a band that I love- this would have been that tour. Later in life , I screwed up AGAIN - had a chance to see the tour that became Stop Making Sense (the movie) and ....missed it . Oh well.

Belew's impressionistic stylings are far out but at the core of the sound textures are... well more or less harmonically consonant tones. Making a guitar sound like bagpipes is a challenging endeavor I could imagine. We also get bits and pieces of later tone standards that represent his idiomatic trademarks... ie. "The Elephant" being identifiable early in the set. idk.. just a bit of observation.

@@bosprocket Indeed, Zappa & Crimson are perfect for his heavy handed style, Talking Heads are a complete 180 from them in style, so perfect fit with Zappa & Fripp, Talking Heads not so much. His guitar drowned out Byrne's subtle riffs, IMO the quartet was more interesting sonically. Just my opinion, but I'm far from the only one who feels this way.

+Rp Mx Actually, the brought in Belew precisely for what he brought to the table and he delivered exactly what the band wanted. Ego, schmego. You say the band came alive later, for me it was all downhill after 1981. Agree to disagree, but the stuff about Belew 'messing up with all the songs for his own ego' is just baloney.

+Rp Mx The Talking Heads owed a lot to the ingenious producer/sound engineer Brian Eno in the studio. This show in my home country Germany is relatively boring. The first 4 albums were very great, then again parts of the "Road To Nowhere" phase...and then they actually vanished into nowhere. What a pity. The last ridiculous thing I read about David Byrne is that in 2006 he composed a "musical" (with some "help" of Peter Gabriel) for the "honor" of the Filipino dictator cunt Imelda Marcos, grotesque "satire" or bitter reality of a Byrne who lost a sense for reality at all, too many dubious drugs? Did that still rich bitch Imelda Marcos pay him for such a slavery service? This cunt let the Beatles get beaten up by Filipino military at Manila airport in 1966, after the Beatles had refused to meet her in her husband's dictator palace coz (Ringo Starr) "We had our day off + then we ain't going to official dates". The Beatles left the Philippines in a hasty hurry + "of course we never went back there" (Paul McCartney).

Well, maybe not their best. But the real mess in here, is in my opinion Once In A Lifetime and I Zimbra (did they ever nail that live?). From Crosseyed and ahead it's pretty ok (Life During Wartimes works best). But I totally agree with @amaro9009 that Live in Rome is by far much better! Especially may favourite Tina.
