Les is such a severely underrated bassist! Nothing fancy, just solid playing, tasteful licks, and punchy tone. Class act!
These guys were such a badass band back in the day.
"The light that burns twice as bright burns half as long". Echo & The Bunnymen was one of the most intense bands ever.

I've seen the Bunnymen play live about 20 times over the years, I met Ian in 1982 at the Hacienda in Manchester, in the downstairs bar which was called the 'Gay Traitor bar'.. my first impression was how tall he was. He seemed like such a nice guy, and happy to chat about music and stuff and our favourite bands, he was already famous then and as an 18 year old I felt so chuffed to have met him and chatted for about 20 mins, before his manager took him away for a press interview

@@valley_robot I was also a fan of both WoT and Intastella, not for dance, but for driving over the Pennines from Manchester to Sheffield and back every day in the dark mostly. Saint Etienne were also a fave of mine around that time.

Thankfully i saw them once intact so to speak ( wembley arena 1988 I think, i remember mac dropping his mic at the start of thorn of crowns!) I've thought how Will has heavily influenced the guitar of bands like Radiohead also, sheer magic , when the lights go down and the gregorian chant starts its STILL a shivery moment even today....

Fantastic drumer!!!! a terrible loss for world music!!!
These were the glory days. I saw them for the first time in March and April 1988 at the Fox Theater in Atlanta, GA. The March show ended after about two songs because Ian was so drunk/stoned/wasted. It was rescheduled for April 15 (I remember it was tax day) and it was phenomenal. Ian gave a nice apology and our boys treated us to a splendid setlist. I've seen them numerous times since then, but nothing matches the power of that original lineup.

One of the best 'post punk' bands. Great soaring guitars and vocals...holds up to this day!
I saw the Bunnymen on Easter Sunday 1988 at the Universal Amphitheatre, Los Angeles. What an incredible show it was. Pete on drums hypnotized me beyond belief. The power he possesed was scary. One the best drummers EVER! R.I.P.

I went to same school as pete. I went backstage at gloucester on the ocean rain tour and had a smoke and a chat with him. The atmosphere in dressing room was not good , everyone at different parts of the room and not talking. They later took a year off. The gig that night was amazing though . Although the band were tired and obviously fed up with each other, they were on top of their game on stage. High watermark of the band .
Absolute raw magic right here. The best, original, psychedelic Post Punk ever made! Seen them many times over the years, met them drank beers with them in California. Long live the Bunnymen!
What an intense version of all that jazz. The full concert shows an energy hard to find in bands from 2020's.
BEST BAND EVER !!!! ECHO & THE BUNNYMEN !!!!
They are very good live!
世界で一番カッコいいバンド!
Back in the day I had a tape player with earphones. The walkman or something like that and I could fit it in my coat. I would ski with "songs to learn and sing" on perceptual play. It's strange but what I remember most is opening up my pocket and the smell of that roasting Walkman coming out of my pocket I'll always remember it and those good times.
The mix on this (as well as on Aztec Camera) is so damn good. Bass and drums comes in so well. Usually so muddy but this is spot on.
Omgosh I saw them 1984 in Berkeley one of the best concerts I've ever been to
Bunnymen at their peak, great version of Silver, one of my favorite bunnymen songs

I don’t know about “peak”. Realistically I’d say that was the previous year, but yes they were still very much on top of their game at this point. A year or so later and the cracks started showing.

Yep. History will look back on the latter half of the 20th century as the peak era of pop culture, and at the 1977-1982 period specifically as the pinnacle of the era. I was 10 years old in ‘77 and 15 in ‘82. I was turning on to all this incredible stuff for the first time, and it shaped me into the person I’ve been ever since. Forged in fire. As disappointing and dystopian as these times are, I’ll at least die happy knowing that I got to experience those years.

@@nicolekoretsky9062 I’m not sure if you’re addressing me or the OP, but in the context of what you said it only makes sense that you meant that for me. If that is indeed the case, then all I can say is that little American flag emoji certainly leads one to believe that the OP thinks that either Mac or the Bunnymen as a whole are from the USA. I mean, could I have misinterpreted the post? Possibly, as I don’t regularly communicate almost entirely in emojis… but from where I sit it sure does appear that way.

I saw them twice in this year, I was 15.That's all I remember cos you saw a cupla bands every other week in those days
They deserved a little more response from the audience. The songs were played with commitment. Not a hugely visual band but really committed to playing well.

I saw them 20-30 times between 81-86 (last show: Manzarek joining them on the Pier in NYC opening for New Order, lots of blow backstage and a hot night in the city). They really were one of the greatest bands of all time. With respect for fans who appreciate them now, once Pete died and Ian got into the rockstar lifestyle, it wasn't the same. Jesus, this is a great show. Thank you.

I was at that concert in 1986 at the Pier! It was one of the best ever! Gene Loves Jezebel opened the show. It was an amazing backdrop seeing the skyscrapers and hearing this great music. I took my new girlfriend who never heard of this stuff. I played Echo, New Order and GLJ in the car for her so she would have some benchmark for the show. We broke up a year or so after the concert, but we still stay in touch. She continues to tell me that show, that night was one of the best of her life. I agree. I would give anything to find a recording of that show in its entirety. Until then, shows like this are fantastic. Those were heady times with excellent music coming out from all over.....especially the UK
