Talking Bollox Podcast: Episode 34 w/Nicola Tallant

Комедия

This week we talk to Ireland's most famous crime journalist, Nicola Tallant.
We've been critical of Nicola on this podcast in the past but we wanted to understand more about her work and why she does what she does. We asked her about her perception of the north inner city and whether it gets a fair shake in the media.

Sorry lads I really like the podcast but this was a disaster of an interview. Ye had no evidence behind any of the accusations that ye threw at Nicola and she was able to clearly explain all of her points with research behind it. Ye also should have done more research as to how newspapers/journalism works. I have sympathy for the argument ye were putting forward but I felt that ye were unfair to Nicola here.

As someone who grew up in Southill in Limerick I can relate to a lot of this. There was a time in my late teens that I had to use my grandparents address when applying for a job. I get the stigma you have both experienced. This is not just a north inner city issue. As Nicola rightly points out "a gang with a different accent". It happens all over the country. Good to see you both using your platform to highlight this and fair play to Nicola for answering each and every question. I think she came across as very respectful. Very knowledgeable and articulate without being condescending. Refreshing to be honest.

I genuinely believe that most genuine reasonable people do not automatically think you are a 'scumbag' because of your address or accent. I once met a guy on my college course from Sheriff Street. MASSIVE chip on his shoulder. Constant references to me coming from a middle class areas constant references to how people think he's from a kip. I felt like saying to him 'mate I couldn't give a shite if you're from Sheriff Street, Dalkey or the Aran Islands as long as you're sound and a bit of craic'. Chill. Jesus christ. It's like travellers. They think everyones against them. 90% of it is in their heads.

Thought-provoking stuff lads. Always felt Nicola Tallant glamourised the gang stuff. It sells papers and books. Really noticed the sensationalism when she was on Eamonn Dunphy's podcast. Never thought about the impact this type of reporting had on the communities and young lads especially. First class podcast.

"If it bleeds it leads." That's why newspapers report on the bloodshed and the drama. Its a basic thing all journalists are taught. Misery stories sell newspaper sadly so thats why they focus on it so much. It's as simple as that

Great interview and well said. I fundamentally disagree that "doorstepping" is something that only happens in rare cases. I think there's tonnes of families that could attest to that point. There's lots of journalists who are ruthless in nature. While the media have a right to tell a story , the extents to which they go needs to change. There's being lots of big stories out there and the victims of crime get dragged into stories just as big or if even more that some of the perpetrators and certainly suffer .

Great podcast lads bit late on the uptake only came across it now but will deffo catch up on the channel pity about the last few points on herion though coz I've seen 90% of my mates growing up picking the foil up for no other reason but arrogance all came from decent clean families, in fact I'd say spoilt Silverspooned. But the drug took over, trauma can't always be the blame in fact should work the opposite if the will is there x

Great podcast very rare to find any genuine working class journalists in Ireland especially for the Sunday world thats what I find funny. Nicola and many others make money of the backs of people death's crime journalism glamorises that type of life I know people in that type of life not the north inner city but and it is far from glamorous. I fully get that comparison you got in that Cafe I mention the area I'm from and people's faces and perception change of me personally without knowing me It is like you are branded. My area is constantly talked about by the Sunday world press It is all by design to keep the working class areas at each other's throats the type Nicola reports for don't be complaining about the drugs and were they get it from for their RTE parties. Not always I know but it is usually the upper middle class who buy their cocaine of these dealers they are hypocrites really. It is all negative press by design imo
