    Well, wow... After watching this podcast I realised that our ginger male cat (Svaras) is definitely so annoying just becouse he is a ginger cat :D we have two cats. Sagutė has black furr and she is so simple to handle. She just wants to eat, sleep and hide. But Svaras is just from another dimention 🙈🤣 he jums into cupboard if you turn away for a second and you cant take him out of it. He scratches the door when you are in another room. Sits in front of a TV if you watch a movie and dont pay attention to him. And my oh my, you cant cut his nails becouse it looks like his soul hurts when you try to do it 🤣🤣🤣🤣

    My fiancé is allergic to cats and I already had two when we met...it was like if you want me, you gotta get used to sneezing! He loves my cats and had grown up with cats so was more used to the allergy and ways to prevent it, but yes I agree! Any person who puts up with that to have cats and date someone is such a keeper!

    Okay, but that story of the worker grabbing the orange cat and putting it in your house because he thought he accidentally let Zyler out is actually kind of sweet that he showed that much concern about it

  • @doctor_owl
    @doctor_owl4 жыл бұрын

    I can relate to the story about the maintenance guy who "rescued" a random orange cat thinking it was Zyler. When I was just about 18 yrs old my mom and I rented a house in a cul-de-sac and our neighbor right next door had a black Labrador retriever. We knew them just well enough that we were allowed to pet the dog and even go into their backyard to play with him while the owner was at work during the day. Well one day my mom was driving home and came across a black Lab who looked EXACTLY like our neighbor's dog. When she stopped, the dog was super friendly and happily jumped right into her back seat, so she figured it HAD to be their dog! She opened the gate and put the dog in the backyard. The next day the owner asked us if we knew how some random dog got into her backyard... Turns out her ACTUAL dog had been at the vet's all day, so we just coincidentally came across someone else's black Lab who happened to be friendly and allowed us to "abduct" him... Oops!!! Don't worry, we found the correct owner soon afterwards and we all had a good laugh over it, but man it was pretty embarrassing haha

    Re: Menchie and her attraction to Ben's ears and licking her bed. She may have been taken away from her mother at too early an age and didn't get weaned properly, or was weaned by force. If they don't get enough time with Mom cat and enough nursing time, they can develop some compensatory behaviors later in life. I have three cats from a litter where the mom cat had to go the vet when the kittens were still nursing. I bottle fed them for the week she was gone. They went back to nursing when she came home but one of them still wanted "mom" time well after she was weaned and the mother was no longer producing milk. It's a psychological bonding thing that gets disrupted when they're taken away too soon. 10/30/2020: Since writing this some five months ago, I've adopted a 4-week old kitten we call Zoey who was abandoned by her mom. Zoey sucks on my earlobes. I think of Ben every time she does this. (That sounds odd). Zoey was weaned but should have spent at least another two weeks with her mother and litter mates. I try to redirect her to something other than my ear and she'll move off and "bond" with the corner of my pillow. It's happening less and less so I assume she's growing out of this behavior. It's endearing in a way but also a little annoying at 2:00 am. :)

    My cat is a rescue and until I got another cat he would always lick my thumbs and then slide his face across them! I realized he was trying to get me to “groom” him and that it was more of a nurturing need he had. It decreases a lot when I got another cat, and she literally never does it but he’ll come and do it to me every once and awhile still!

    We inherited my grandma's cat when she moved in with us and eventually passed away. He's the sweetest cat I've ever met. When I was still living with my parents and would come home from work he would always be at the door shaking his tail and meowing for me to pet him. Which was a weird quirk haha, but cats do show affection sometimes.

  • @aadhikotak7721

    @aadhikotak7721

    Cats can be super affectionate! Both are lovely and in my experience I have had to earn the love of my rescue dog. Even though dogs are typically more outwardly affectionate, the love that allows them to trust you when they are afraid or feeling unwell comes with time. They do feel more inclined to be with you to begin with, because they are pack animals and have a strong family structure in their nature. Love from a pet is always earned, even though that love is expressed differently than affection. Its kinda funny though my dog is much more aloof towards me now compared to when she was a puppy, but I can tell that she loves me more and trusts me.

    I love how y'all pointed out how Menchie knows when y'all are in pain and actually cares. A lot of the time cats get a bad rep as being heartless and not caring about their owners, but honestly, that's not the case. I used to get really bad stomach aches when I was younger that I would just lay down, curl up in a ball and cry, my old cat would curl up in the little space in between my chest and my legs and just start purring because she knew something was wrong. When I start crying around my dogs, which I love to death, they just go "sooo... you wanna play??"

    CW: actually giving up on a sick kitten Something similar to what happened with Menchie happened to my mom and the kitten she'd adopted last July. I don't live with them anymore thankfully, but it means I wasn't there, so I don't know exactly how it went down that my mom realized she wasn't ok, but it was this January or February. She told me she was taking the kitten to the vet, and the vet did some basic tests, and said that further care would be like 800$ or something, (she's texting me all the updates as it's happening), and before I can tell her about ways to come up with the money (I was going to tell her how easily the story of a sick 9 month old kitten would gather support on gofundme, because let's face it, it totally would), she told me she just told them to euthanize her. She didn't even try to think of a way to come up with the money. I mean, once I told her about what she COULD'VE done, she regretted it, and regretted not taking the kitten for physicals, taking any of the animals for physicals, not having pet insurance, all the things I brought up after the fact, but it still hurt so much to think how quickly she just gave up on the life of that 9 month old kitten. I never even met the kitten, but just thinking about how much life she had ahead of her, how she was just a baby, it makes me so sad to think about. RIP baby Tosca :( I'm so glad that you didn't give up on Menchie and figured out how to get her to the life she deserves

My sister and my mom were meeting at a predetermined location for a job but my mom was about to leave and saw Tux on her porch! She thought it was strange, why would my sister come to her apartment, why did she bring her cat, why did she just let it out of the car to roam. So my mom opened the door and the cat just walked in like she owned the place. But then my mom looked around outside and my sister was no where to be found. Tux starting drinking out of the toilet so my mom rushed to grab her and realized it was in fact NOT Tuxy. So my mom opened the door and the cat trotted out the door and down the sidewalk😂 she was so confused.

    I know this is forever old 😅 But I just wanted to give some input on Menchie's aloofness about other humans and socialising. We got two sisters as kittens, and their personalities couldn't be more different. Tika loved EVERYONE, she came to say hi to anyone who stepped in the door, wether it was an old friend or an electrician 😂 But Talwen has always been a timid cat, when our best friends who we've been friends with for a decade is over it'll take her 2-3 hours to come out to say hi. So they both was socialised a lot as kittens, the exact same amount, but that's just their different personalities! We lost Tika in March 💔So now we are debating wether to get another third cat (we have Talwen and our fosterfail Myra, we've had Talwen for 13 years and Myra for 9 years), because Talwen and Myra don't care about each other and I worry they are lonely. They aren't aggresive towards each other; they just don't care about each other. Tika was their glue. So we are considering to get a kitten that hopefully will befriend at least one of them.

    Honeatly I came to the comments to see if anyone else had said something like this, where I'm from its normal for cats to be outdoor cats, theres tons of cats in the area and people have catflaps so they come and go when they want. Of course some get hit by cars which is horribly sad but most know to stay away from the roads. But the cats love to be outside, they see each other, they visit other people's gardens and steal food and head scratches and yeah they love hunting

  • @mirakaiser4771

    Same here. I live in the Netherlands and it's pretty normal to let your cat outside. Also, I have tremendous respect for Ben and Cristine and know they care enormously about their cats, but when anyone else has mentions indoor cats in the past I ... almost perceive it as "animal cruelty". It gives my cat so much purpose to be outside. He loves it. He gets to discover new territory, he gets to stare angrily at other cats, he sometimes catches a mouse. He's 14. My two previous cats were nearly 20 when they died of old age. What purpose in life do they have just sitting in a house all day? I guess I'm probably anthropomorphising, it sounds like being an indoor cat is way less hard on a cat than I'm imagining.

    My cat I had adopted as an 8 week old kitten and he just never seemed happy. Just subdued and melancholy. He was always trying to squeeze out the front door whenever anyone came or went. One day, when he was about 2, he got outside. He was gone for a couple hours and came back at dinner time. He seemed happy and content. So I tried letting him outside a couple times per week. He completely changed after that. He was happy all the time. When we let him out, he didn't stray far; always around the yard and always at the door for mealtimes. I realized he was depressed if he couldn't go outside. He doesn't understand English, so I couldn't explain to him why I needed to keep him inside. So I let him go out when he wanted. I know people won't agree with that, but he was happy and healthy until he died at 15 from a sudden liver disease. Being an indoor/outdoor cat was what *he* needed. Yes, I know I risked his safety, but I did it because otherwise he was literally depressed. It was the right decision for him and I stand by it.

They're so happy outside! They're healthy, active (one of them is 12, in condition of 6 year old cat; she has also panic attacks when inside, although in winter she likes to be in cellar), free and happy. Also I want to ask Cristine about grass. Do they have grass inside their house, or they don't have any? Cats need grass (many people don't know this). Also they arent really safe inside, because they tend to be apatic or they eat too much (look at Zyler)

I have never trained my cat to do this, but when she senses a change in my behaviour / emotional state, she comes running into my room and starts cuddling me until I am reeally calm. Sometimes I start dissociating while I'm having a panic attack and start breathing heavily, and my cat will bring me back to reality by touching my face and forces me to pet her until my breathing settles down. She has stopped many huge panic attacks and I don't know what I would do without her, she saves my life on a daily basis.

    I’m sorry for your loss😞😢 We lost 3 dogs in one yr a few yrs back and it was really rough. One was our 14yr old Golden retriever/lab mix who was also my self trained service dog. She was healthy until the last 2 months of her life when the cancer appeared. She had just got to the point we were having to consider ending her suffering when she passed in her sleep the next night. I miss her so much.😞 As far as the other two(both Pomeranians)one died from a seizure disorder they had developed in the last year which was apparently genetic (she was 9yrs old). And the other had a heart attack at age 11. Which after an autopsy the vet found he had a serious birth defect in his heart. We knew he had a murmur but as he had no other symptoms we didn’t investigate it further. 😕😞 We have a 14yr old Pomeranian right now and I dread the day he passes so much. But at least we will know he lived a full happy spoiled life. We also have an 4yr old Shepard mix(who I’m training to do the same tasks as my previous dog) & 2 tiny (5lbs & 7lbs) 3yr old terrier mixes who know some tricks but are mainly just little furry lap warmers😂. Hopefully they will all live long healthy lives...but you never know. Just like with people..cancer & other illnesses can appear suddenly without warning. I just wish our pets could tell us how they felt so we could catch & try to treat things sooner. 😕 They instinctively hide any sign of weakness as showing such signs in the wild would attract predators. Well...most do. My 14yr old Pom is so dramatic about nearly ANY discomfort he is feeling that once we thought he had something seriously wrong & rushes him to the vet and...the ONLY thing they could find wrong with him was mild irritation in his throat! (Likely from barking so much) Sprayed some numbing spray down his throat & within minutes he was back to his bouncy self. 🙄🙄🤦🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️ Thankfully the vet found it hilarious & didn’t charge us for the visit. Damn drama king😒😒But we love him

    I know I’m two years late but this was great! One thing - I think that you guys should try to mention the importance of breakaway collars versus regular collars. If they get snagged on something, they will come right apart and you don’t have to worry about your cat getting strangled. This is a real risk and it is something that people need to keep in mind. It’s not often that you see other collars for cats these days, but they are out there and sometimes people put dog collars on cats.

    Watched this episode recently and thought I'd offer some more information on some topics for viewers' interest. For context, I am a veterinary technician with 10yrs clinical experience. Sounds like Zyler had urinary crystals. This is one of the most common conditions in neutered male cats. Crystals form in the bladder when the urine develops a pH that allows the different minerals in urine to bind together. These crystals can become large and they can damage the lining of the bladder and the urethra; they can even become so large they block the urethra entirely. Urinary crystals is absolutely an emergent condition and a cat diagnosed with this should be on special urinary food (prescription food) for their entire life. These foods are formulated to keep the pH of urine in a specific range, to prevent crystals from forming. It should be noted that a cat that is going to develop urinary crystals will likely do so on any over-the-counter food, not just the really cheap stuff. Even if Cris spent a lot of money or Zyler's food when he was young, he likely still would have developed this urinary issue eventually as it's his 🎶body chemistry 🎶 There are 3 main types of discipline or training: positive reinforcement, negative reinforcement, and punishment. Most people confuse negative reinforcement and punishment - negative reinforcement isn't scolding, it's removing or taking away the subject of the bad behavior. Meaning, if you have a dog who is chewing a shoe, negative reinforcement would be taking the shoe away. Punishment (yelling at or hitting the dog chewing on the shoe) people tend to understand, and it is the least effective in training cats and dogs. Cats and dogs are more likely to avoid being caught doing the thing that resulted in punishment than avoid doing the offending behavior (the dog would take the shoe behind furniture to hide while it chewed). Negative reinforcement can work, but in my experience, it typically results in the pet just trying to achieve their goal in a different way. Positive reinforcement (giving the dog an appropriate item to chew on instead of the shoe) does tend to be the most effective in training cats and dogs. Cats can be trained, but it usually takes a lot more time than dogs. If they are food motivated, it's much easier. One of my cats actually knows how to sit, shake, turn around, lay down and roll over because he loves food so much! I hope this was informative to some folks :)

    Y'all are awesome pet parents!!! Thinking of the dynamic between your babies and choosing not to adopt another cat because the dynamic is perfect is such a responsible thing to do. I just wanted to applaud you for that. I made my husband and son week for the dynamic to be good to adopt our puppy and kitten. I'm not going back on anything I did because I plan to carefully and we now have a puppy and kitten who are best friends and our older cat has plenty of space to feel comfortable and protected even though he isn't the biggest fan of the babies He is not hostile towards them and he is beginning to take to the puppy quite a bit.

    I have a cat who we've had since she was a baby. She's about 5 now and is definitely an outdoor cat. We live in a small town in California, but it's definitely not rural or urban. She has made herself somewhat independent but also has learned not to stray off of our side of the block (it spans about 4 houses), and is only let out during the day. Sometimes if she’s still out after sunset, I take my dog on a night walk and she will walk right next to me until we reach the corner block and then waits in the nearby bushes until we come back. There are days when she will spend all day sleeping in her kitty condo inside, and others she could be out for hours. We don't worry much because she always comes back from her adventures and she's also been chipped. I’ve been a cat owner since I was a kid (I’ve had 4 total), and I learned that there are some cats who are able to hold there own for a while outside without supervision, but it all comes down to where you live. Side note - I found out last year that she would visit the house next door that gets rented out by culinary students because they left a bag of cat treats on the porch with a note saying they loved seeing her because it reminded them of their cats back home.

    two important things for everyone to learn: 1. As a cat foster myself, you don't need to only foster kittens! I've fostered adult cats for over a year now, and there are many adult cats in need of foster homes. Many rescues operate exclusively out of foster homes. Even if they have a physical shelter, by fostering a cat you are allowing another to take its place in the shelter, therefore saving TWO lives. 😊 Make sure you contact your local rescues for more information if you're genuinely interested! I found mine through Petfinder. 2. I have my own cat and while I understand the concerns, it is possible to foster and keep your own cats at the same time. My personal cat is super grumpy and not the most friendly with other cats. As long as you have a separate room with a door that you can close and a litter box/food/water for the foster, you can keep them separate without too much hassle. (maybe doesn't work if Zyler can open doors though 😂)

    Another thing that helps with the allergies (done some research because my bf is a bit allergic as well) - actually not letting the cats stay in the bedroom. Like Ben said as well - that's what sometimes irritates his breathing the most and not letting the cats stay in bed could help to reduce this irritation. I know it is a very very hard thing to do when your cats have been sleeping with you for a long time in the bed, but health is more important and it is one thing you can try out.

My fiancé had never had a cat before and he was super nervous picking her up at first and she would meow and want to be put down immediately but now he’s more comfortable and confident and so is she. Also you can train them in certain ways. I trained my cat not to touch the xmas tree by wrapping the bottom in foil and spritzing with water and shaking a jar of coins the first year and every year since she doesn’t go near it.

    The cat we had for 10+ years was always very afraid of people. It took probably 2years for her to get comfortable with just my immediate family. Whenever other people would come to the house she would hide the whole time and come out right when they would leave. It was to the point that people forgot we had a cat because they would never see her. She seemed like she had a lot of anxiety as she stayed very skittish and we never could clean her because she never wanted to be held and luckily she kept her self well groomed but she she was a beautiful calico cat and we adopted her as a kitten

    On the outdoor cat comment: Having a rescue cat that was a stray, we had no real option, that was the life she knew and would not settle inside. It took 8 months of having her indoors and her getting horribly upset and unsettled for us to realise that we'd stripped her of everything she knew. We've had a few close calls with her but at 7 years old this year she's absolutely fine. I completely understand your position, and if I were (when I get!) to get a cat on my own then I would have an indoor cat as I live in the city. But my parents live in the countryside, (they even moved the cat to the other side of the country!) and she is routinely vaccinated, dewormed and get de-flea treatments. She comes home 3 or 4 times a day to check in with us, and sleeps in my bed at night with me! Wouldn't normally write such a long comment but I genuinely feel like (in the rural parts of the UK at least) there is a culture of letting cats outside, knowing that they will roam and be free. But also that they love us and will come home for food, comfort and safety. The cities are different, and other countries will be different too but the dismissal of 'bad cat owners' is really upsetting for a lot of cat owners! Still glad to hear that you have an opinion and that it is based on the cats best interest, but I do think some acknowledgement is needed, that just because you let your cat outside doesn't make you any worse or better of a cat owner.

    Exactly! I have two cats, a brother and a sister. We live in the Finnish countryside with our closest neighbours 200 meters away, almost no traffic and a horse farm nearby. They love being outdoors and they always come home at night to spend time with me and my husband. They are neutered, very affectionate, well behaved to our guests, and we even taught one of them a bunch of "dog tricks". We regularly check up on their health. I couldn't imagine keeping them inside all day, robbing them of their sunny naps in tall grass and independency to roam freely. On the contrary I'm having a hard time understanding city cats that are indoors all day, but I understand that if a cat is raised that way and gets lots of affection and stimulation they can be happy. I admire Cristine and Ben a lot and can see that they are wonderful cat parents, but was a bit shocked about their judgmental thoughts in this specific area...

    I’m so glad you commented this too! I’m also in the UK and it hurts to hear such a sweeping statement that letting cats outside is bad. I don’t live in the city and most of our neighbourhoods have cats that are all allowed outside, and they are all happy and healthy! I’m beginning to understand their argument, but if I heard someone here tell me they didn’t let their cat out I’d probably feel quite sorry for the cat.

Most time shes been out for was 2 days then she turned up back home with a squirrel almost bigger than her for tea! I think it does depend on the cat though as some aren't very wild and wouldn't do well outside but if you have an active and feisty cat I think its definitely best to let them use that energy on hunting and playing outside

    french countryside here, i adopted my cat from the street (she was apparently abandoned when someone a couple houses over moved out), she's partly outdoors but since we don't have a cat door, i kinda police if/when she can leave and i think she's learnt to check the weather before asking me to open the door bc i won't let her go if it's raining or too cold/windy. when she's out it's from a dozen minutes (because i guess pooping in the vineyards >>> litter box) to a couple hours on normal days and she's usually back inside before night. only a couple times in the 2 and a half years since she moved in did she not sleep home and each time it was in the middle of summer with super clear and hot weather and the only time it lasted more than 24 hours, she still would show up on our terrace or the neighbour's yard but just refused to get in?? anyway she's getting used to the indoors life and doesn't scream at the door or try to rush out of it half as much as she used to but she still wants to enjoy some chilling in the grass at times.

    it’s the same with my cats. while we do live in suburbia now, we didn’t when we first got them and prior to having them they grew up outside, we thought it would be unfair to not let them live in the environment they grew up in and understood best and even when we did try to transition them into being only indoor cats they weren’t happy at all regardless of the enrichment we gave them while they were inside with us. however since they’ve gotten older they prefer to stay inside more which is definitely nice. and we try to be as responsible as we could be: collars with bells, only letting them out during the day and calling them in at night, microchips, vaccinations, spay/neutering but like i said now that they’re becoming more senior they’re spending most of their time on someone’s bed sleeping than being outside.
