I am in the process of learning Thai at the moment, not to get girls, but for my girlfriend. She speaks very limited English, within 2 months I have learned more Thai than she knows of English. Thai language is very different to English, direct translation does not always work correctly due to grammatical differences and words that just do not exist in Thai. There are many words that only exist in English and do not translate in other languages as English is a much bigger language than almost any other, second only to Arabic. Update: Around 7 months into learning Thai, almost fluent and can hold an extended conversation. I can create long sentences, explain things, ask questions and express opinion or emotion.

@@abbigayedavis1730 Mostly google translate, didn't find books very helpful because I can't read thai perfectly yet. I can read a lot but i cant write much. I also talk with my girlfriend for at least 5 hours every day and it is good practise. If you dont know any Thai people then go to a Thai restaurant or store , they are almost always friendly and are very surprised to see that a farang is willing to learn their language.

@@abbigayedavis1730 One thing that helped me the most is my whiteboard, I bought a small whiteboard and hung it on the wall in my room. Write some words you want to learn on it and every day when you look at it, you will be reminded of this word. It will stick in your mind eventually. Dont wipe the word off of the board until you remember it.

@@sheogorathdaedricprinceofm320 oh ok thanks. What i have been doing recently is watching thai shows on netflix with english subs and then i rewind the same scene and switchh to thai subs. A benefit of that is associatinh the sounds with the words. However, I realized that Thais speak really, really fast and when they do, they don't enunciate every syllable and the words sound different. Basically, identical words are said differently when spoken slowly versus quickly. So my new obstacle is to train my ear to the fast talking.

@@abbigayedavis1730 You should know that Thais dont pronounce "ร" properly unless the word is too similar to another word. The dont pronounce the "R" sound, they use an "L" sound instead.

Pluck up heart. Thai is a tough nut to crack and the greatest linguistic challenge I faced to date. Although I hope to reach native level listening & reading comprehension, speaking may remain a life long unaurmountable challenge.
