Talk Is Jericho: AEW’s Christian Cage vs Frankie Kazarian

Ойын-сауық

Listen to the full podcast at talkisjericho.com
Christian Cage is All Elite! And what a surprise it proved to be, not just for fans, but for Christian himself. The newest AEW superstar talks about his AEW debut at the Revolution PPV and what both Jon Moxley and Tony Khan said to convince him to sign. He details his journey back to the ring, including the extensive medical tests and the strict fitness and nutrition regimen he started long before AEW was even an idea. He shares the story of his surprise appearance at this year’s Royal Rumble, his moment in the ring with former tag partner Edge, and why that didn’t lead to a longer-term deal with WWE. He also talks about his first true match back after being away from wrestling for 7 years and why Frankie Kazarian was the perfect opponent. He explains why “Out Work Everyone” is more than just a clever catchphrase and what he hopes to accomplish in the final chapter of his in-ring career. Plus, Christian and Jericho remember some of their many collaborations and matches in WWE.

This is why I don't mind a legend wrestler like Christian wrestles.... They sweat, blood, and tears for this business, and for all the moments he gave us... He deserves to be back,... some fans are never going to be happy, but we should appreciate what Christians loves to do....

Jericho said it best, the variety of styles is why I love AEW so much. Personally thought the Christian match was a great, and perhaps better when you add a 7 year layoff. It was storytelling at its finest, without the modern dives and high spots. Also for anyone that thought Christian was gassed, you got worked. The story they told was fantastic.

I agree with Jericho in that this did feel like watching a match from a decade ago, but in a good way, much slower, more deliberate pace, it felt like a story was unfolding. The match had 1 week of buildup, and it felt like it told more of a story than any other match on the show that night. It wasn't perfect, and I think Christian alluded to that, later in the match you could tell he hasn't got his full stamina back, but that comes with time, which means he's only gonna get better. I really hope he sticks with this style, and helps some guys tell some stories in the ring. Kazarian was the perfect opponent for that first match back, because he worked in that era and knows that style and pace.

AEW has high spot guys like Guevara and Darby, but a lot of guys are having great matches stretching people out. Hook isn’t someone who uses high spots. I don’t see too many high spots used by the new BCC either. As for Kazarian I watch him on Dark. Sometimes I get the feeling they don’t know what to do with him. I actually wouldn’t mind seeing Hook lose a match to Kazarian where he learns something from Frank before beating him in a rubber or rematch. Christian could serve the same role. I have a sneaky suspicion that in Kayfabe, Team Tazz is about to break up. Send Hook on a hero’s journey and put guys like Kazarian and Christian in his way. Hey!

A lockup has been replaced with a guy doing a 450 in to someone at the start. It's nice seeing some old school wrestling matches mixed in on the show. That's the main reason i love aew. I had to stop watching wwe because they were taking guys i loved on the indies and other promotions and making them wrestle a wwe style and it just made everyone feel the same. I just couldn't watch it anymore and haven't for over 3 years now. I had just stopped watching wrestling all together. When aew came out i decided to give it a chance and even though i don't love everything i do like enough that i don't miss a show.
