Taliban's Opium Ban: Why The West is Upset With The Decision | Vantage with Palki Sharma
Last year, Taliban banned its opium and heroin cultivation which was the major source of revenue for the country. But some western commentators are now against the ban. They call it harmful for both the Afghans and the West. What are their objections centered to? Palki Sharma tells you more.

@5:01. You are hiding the truth. You KNOW the Taliban had ALWAYS been against opium, and that this is NOT the first time the Taliban banned opium. The Taliban had successfully banned opium for the first time in 2000. But the US invaded the following year. After the US took over Afghanistan, the US reversed the ban. Now that the Taliban is in control, there is no reason why they would not reinstate the ban.

as an on again - off again addict I gotta say I actually do agree with most of the arguments EU has made. This does literally nothing in terms of lowering addiction rate or heroin use it just creates more issues that come along with it. When I heard of this ban my immediate thought was - "Well f*ck here comes the fentanyl" and I gotta say I`m honestly surprised that politicians reacted the same way as well. Also I`m pretty sure that they are really doing some effort trying to make the argument about immigration seem like it`s EU`s main concern. Such statements were without a doubt made but just because it`s a fact. It`s also not just an issue for Europe - you can be sure that any and all of those hypothetical immigrants won`t be happy at all with such an outcome selling literally their last livestock and whatever personal possessions they may have left. And we are not talking about single individuals meaning the farmers - it`s their whole families that have to leave everything and everyone they ever knew and move to a place that is different in literally every possible way from what they are used to (climate, culture, religion, society, etc etc etc) and it`s a quite dramatic difference at that - basically day and night. The suggestion that those farmers should plant other crops like what and corn is ignorant at best I would add insulting cz the potential "profit" of any of these is tenfold less compared to poppy cultivation. Last but not least - imposing such a ban although seeming like such a positive initiative at first glance does literally nothing in terms of lowering opiate use and abuse. When users can`t find or afford heroin they would buy the next "best" thing though in this case ofc it`s worse - way, way , waaaay worse. Ofc as I said this is just what I think I`m actually pretty curious to hear arguments why this is indeed good news.

I love this. Most the world has no idea that the CIA has been paying the Afghan farmers to grow the poppy. They use it to sale in Turkey for Europe and Russia, it's how they fund their black ops. Seriously ask yourself where the US is selling the oil they are stealing from Syria and where the money is going? Fuel, drugs, weapons, and sex are the most used and traded assets on earth and can be easily traded if you created the trading network.

we have to understand that since the USA have declared "the war on drugs" after they occupied Afghanistan each year brought a record harvest of poppies and the production of opium skyrocketed. Another thing is that the opium and heroin from Afghanistan was brought to Europe's soil on American or NATO enclave in Kosovo. From there is distributed all over the European continent. This is why Kosovo has a huge interest for America not because they care of someone that lives there.

How is it a good thing that fentanyl will be in higher demand now? That is a net negative for society. Get ready to see people in your community start dropping like flies. And not just the IV-injection addicted drug users (which I assume many wouldn’t even care if they died, even though they are our mothers, brothers, fathers and sisters). Get ready for kids to start dying, for your friends who just do pain pills or cocaine every now and again to start dying (even if you don’t know about it). The majority of people dying from fentanyl are not hardcore drug addicts. It’s teenagers trying pills at a party they think are safe. It’s people doing cocaine that accidentally come across a bag cut with fentanyl. It’s “regular” people who are dying the most from this drug. Also China doesn’t necessarily benefit from a ramped up demand in fentanyl. China doesn’t make illicit fentanyl anymore, it’s the Mexican cartels making the bulk of fentanyl in the world. China just supplies the pre-cursors. China banned illicit fentanyl production in 2019. So really, the only people these policies are good for are criminal networks who skin people’s faces off on camera.

Get into fruity moonshine production. You can burn 188 proof whiskey in a camp stove.

I would say someone is paying them to shut down the operations of opium plantations. I cant really imagine the west really even considering this situation at all.

Very good question indeed. It is obvious that Afghans don't get 80% of the profit.

The idea and the goal is to complain and to keep complaining to make their opponents look bad. It doesn't matter if they are killing the people enmasse or finding a cure for Cancer. The idea is to demonize their opponents no matter what.

****Meetingitis?, I agree, a lot of the so called " meetings" could be accommodated via email or zoom. However, some managers with ego issues look for meetings to show themselves....pretty sad.

looks like a repeat of 1999-2000 when production was reduced to 200 tons vs after years of occupation by the US, production was 3500 tons in 2009. The farmers can do like before and grow coffee for a decent living.

If the West needs Opium so badly, why don't they grow it within their country? U.S.A has a huge land mass, I am sure a few acres of land can be spared for Opium cultivation. Why should the West's Opium come from lands of Afghanistan, India etc ? LOOKS LIKE THERE IS AN ALTERIOR MOTIVE OF THE WEST

Because they made a law that it's illegal to plant them in their own country, hence they used another country to do it and enforce it with wars. Just like when Dutch colonized parts of the world, they practice slavery but in Netherlands itself, slavery is banned. To this day, their people didn't know that those Westerners were slave masters and thinks colonization was a good thing because of their hypocrisy.

Interesting. A single economist who advocates for a more complex program for opium eradication suddenly turns into the entire West.
