    Just want to add that the devs actually added Text Chat in the early access release (it's in some cases a bit wonky still, like international symbols in text) by hitting enter! Really like the rest of the video/presentation, shows what TaleSpire really is good for and why people get so excited for it - even when it doesn't yet have the automation-bells-and-whistles other VTTs have. And props to you for mentioning those missing bells and whistles, I'd hate to see people go into TaleSpire with the wrong expectations and dislike it for that reason.

    Yeah, if you want to make your own maps from scratch and make them look really good, it can be a bit of a task. But if you utilize the slabs that you can copy from those community sites just to get aspects for maps (buildings, big terrain, etc) you can piece together some good looking stuff pretty fast. Might be worth waiting until the community has really grown and the amount available is really robust.

    Great review. The more I play around with this, the more I like it. It just requires a few hours of practice to get familiar with the controls. I don't really play modern "grid-based" D&D, but I totally plan to use this for table-top dungeon crawler board games like HeroQuest and Dungeon Universalis. I've even got the hide boxes working pretty well...however I have yet to figure out how to use the alpha fog of war settings yet.

    Oof, lemme see if my brain remembers what the CMs taught me about fog of war...Once you activate the feature in the menu, I think you so a box select of an area, then hit 5...or F5. Then assigned player Miniatures line of sight are literally the only thing that can cause it to vanish (as the GM, you cannot, so be careful!). Hope that helps (and that I remembered right).

    Tip to use one copy -> Everyone takes Discord and you share the Screen -> This will show all you have done but for saving up 20€ for each player? That is a fucking steal ;) and works wonders. You can easily move enemies for players and stuff.... Not that I have yet to use this but is something we tested using Cypher System where I shared the screen and showed pictures of places when we played and everyone had my screen which they could look. Loving this slick looking mapmaker! My only exposure towards tabletop games came solely from monopoly, and my experiences with DnD are from watching youtube/twitch channels (which are great to listen to when I'm working). That said, I'm nothing but a total normie. What drove me to throw my money on day one release of the early access is simply what it has to offer just by looking at their store page. The visual, prospect of creativity, visual storytelling, my background as a 3D artist, and the fact that steam recommended it because I own/wishlisted a number of dev tools and productivity software. If anyone asks me whether I give two piece about its VTT side, honestly I don't and I don't know any better to make use of it. What I CAN do is to be a mapmaker and contribute to TS community and have brilliant minds cook up stories around my creation.

    be cool to see what you would think of talespire now. the assest have grown a lot and Hero's Forge has paired up with them so you can design and import custom models into the platform. True this costs money but found if players pooled together or if you (as dm) use the pro plus sub to hero's forger you get 5 free digital transfers tokens (worth more then the sub) and monthly free random model packs. The community pages have grown and filled out a lot, and some of the menus in game have expanded or been modified. I am just returning to DMing after a break since talespire first came out and I was able to make several sizable maps with insane detail simply my mixing and using community made stuff with some personal touches. I would highly recommend this to any DM or party that is willing to spend the money. ((I will have to state as a closer it is still very much in progress, The team behind it has remained dedicated and whats there now is satisfying enough IMO))

    There is text chat built right into the game. Press ENTER (or was it space) to enter chat mode. Type content and it will be said in a speech bubble by the corresponding character as well as be place in the chat (which can be opened and closed). There are also a lot of unofficial plugins mods available for TaleSpire which provide user created unofficial functionality while we wait for the functionality to be officially added by the Tale Spire development team. They can be easily installed/enabled/disabled/uninstalled using the R2ModMan manager which allows you to choose which plugins you want active and/or choose to launch an unmodded game. Huh...honestly, I'm not too sure it would be great for that. But maybe...you know what, I'm actually going to just check right now lol... So, seems like it would okaaay at small maps, but the camera never gets 100% perfectly overhead, there is always a tiny angle to it. You get a map that is more than like 10x10 and I feel like it isn't going to line up as a flat picture grid (if that makes sense). I don't think it would be worth a purchase just for that though.

    Being honest and after being invited to a game that the DM requires us the players to get to play the game he wants I don't see TaleSpire as something worth wild compared to the other VTTs. I still think the 25 dollars per player is much BECAUSE they might not stick with the DM that wants to use it. They might get a game that will be on Roll20 or Foundry or Fantasy Grounds or Owl, ect. Most players won't even consider using it as a DM because of the lack of notes, character sheets, and support if they are new to being a DM. So 125 dollars is much compared to Foundry with the 50 dollars the DM puts in and gets forever. There is one thing that I can say is a positive and main selling point of TaleSpire, it does have the potential of making great maps. If you want a 3D lifestyle map making software you can also use to host your games, then this is it. You won't be able to find anything that beats it until WOTC releases their own VTT on DND Beyond.

    The chat isn't that big a deal to me given that discord is a thing. The character sheets is where I'm sort of left in a bit of a wtf mode. Granted, there are more stat slots now than when this vid went live. I guess what I'm trying to iron out is how to incorporate a newer ttrpg, Apotheosis into this given that, though it has similarities w/D&D, it's has some major differences. Anyone know of a good character sheet program that can be added into the game? I like this product given that it's a complete program versus a base for heavy monetization.

  • @gametender1

    You could always have your players have an actual character sheet then just stream the game or if you want to keep the gm mode private buy it for someone else as well have them stream and then you can move all the pieces etc. you would have to use the hand books for now which isn a big deal cause you can get them digitally or just have a set up in front of you since no one will see it.

    @@gametender1 Yeah, I was contemplating the separate sheets, issue with that is there's not too much use in using the app that I couldn't accomplish with something else. It's a bit of a moot point, I think, both the Author of Apotheosis and deve for Talespire expressed interest, but, all I was there for in that case was to make that connection, it seems that neither of them decided to for whichever reason, nothing against either of them, both are pretty busy I'm sure. Thanks for the suggestions either way. It's appreciated.

    I genuinely don't understand the love people have towards TaleSpire. It's a slick looking map-building program with extremely limited(and I'd argue in-the-end useless) TTRPG features that requires that everyone in your party purchases it. And then you have to still run some auxiliary programs on top of that to actually be able to play an RPG. Compare that to pretty much any other fully functional VTT program on the market and this falls reeeeeeeeeeeeally far off the mark. It lacks so much features that are necessary for a program to even be considered a VTT, it's kinda ridiculous. The fans of the product will tell you "Oh, but the devs have promised us X, Y and Z!" and that doesn't matter in the slightest. We're buying the software now, in it's current condition, not in the hypothetical future that may or may not come to fruition. The current iteration of the software is so painfully lacking in VTTRPG functionality that it is nothing more than a glorified map maker. And on top of that, it's one of those things that makes running the game even *more* complicated than it already is. The price of entry for the whole party is ridiculously disproportional when you actually consider at what is offered, and what else you could get with that money instead in the realm of VTT. Maybe this will be worth it in the future, I truly hope so. The map-building portion of TaleSpire is really cool and there is a lot of nifty tech behind it. But as a VTT? Naw.

  • @TheDungeonNewbsGuide

    @TheDungeonNewbsGuide

    3 жыл бұрын

    That's a totally fair assessment! As I've said to people, I would never use this for my major campaigns. The lack of support for all of the nitty gritty stuff, character sheets, journals, etc...TaleSpire just does not have what I need. I think the love comes from the fact that it really brings the feel of a high quality, real-life tabletop to remote play. I'm no graphics snob, but there is honestly something that just feels really amazing about moving your miniature around a 3 dimensional town, with stories to buildings, sewers below, and hills in the neighboring forest. For a lot of folks, I think having that 3D map to explore can be a lot of fun. I already have some amazing smaller campaign and one-shot ideas that I think would be a ton of fun to play in TaleSpire. Could another vtt do them better? I dunno, probably hehe. But again, I get where you are coming from. It really is minimalistic at this point, and if every player is going to have to buy a copy to play that is really important to consider. But I think some groups will have a lot of fun with it, especially if you are playing with a rules-lite system like Fate or something, where there isn't that much system stuff to integrate anyway. Thanks for the viewpoint though! I think that's an important perspective a lot of folks would agree with!
