For those that were still waiting for it, I'm sorry to say that I've decided to cancel the Tales of Zestiria critique. The more I thought about it, the more I realized that it no longer fit the current trajectory of the channel and that on a personal level, I simply had no desire to work on it or videos of that nature anymore. I apologize to those that were looking forward to the rest of the video series, but I feel it's best for me to drop it and move on. I hope everyone reading this can understand and respect my wishes.

Thanks for the upload. Zestiria was my first Tales of game, and while I did find a lot of it frustrating, it had enough things going for it that I did want to see more of the series. I absolutely loved Mikleo and Edna, the skits, and most importantly that freakin' soundtrack! Looking forward to the next video!

I've always felt a certain "something" in the series was missing from Xillia onward, bit could never put my finger on it, but the environment designs are very much a huge part of it, and it's refreshing to finally have that quantified. I actually like Zesteria a good bit more than most, and I do absolutely LOVE running around in the overworld. The Water Temple, however, can go burn in the deepest pit of hell :)

Tales of Zestiria was my first Tales of game and actually made me like the series. I have played Berseria and part of Vesperia, and I still find Tales of Zestiria to be my favorite out of the three. My criticism comes from a place of love, I deeply empathize with the developers and I have no doubt that they simply wanted to make the best game they could, but the end result was something that, as a long time fan, I felt wasn't as good as it ideally should've been.

@@adrianarius9802 If a game is weak and has problems, it's important to point them out so that the devs can learn and do better. This is a video game, not a person, not a family member, a product made by a company You've crafted a strange narrative, I've met plenty of old fans that liked Zestiria and newcomers that got turned away from the series altogether because of it aswell. You make it seem like all the new players love it and it's just old-timers like me that are complaining when that's just not true. Also, I never scandalized Hideo Baba, in fact I made a video defending him because his mistreatment was uncalled for. Honestly, it's not my intention at all to make anyone feel bad for enjoying the game, which is why I haven't made fun of you, or anyone for enjoying it. If you love the game, by all means, continue to do so. That's not what I said in the video, this is what I said: "As a side note, it honestly breaks my heart whenever someone tells me that Zestiria is their first Tales of game as it usually results in me trying to explain to them why they should still give the series a chance" I had friends approach me, saying that Zestiria was their first Tales game and it turned them off from the series entirely, that's where the line in the video comes from. I don't know if you misheard or misunderstood me, but you make it seem like I am broken up over this being people's first entry in the series, when it's clear that what I am actually sad about, is people giving up on the series entirely due to Zestiria. I tried to speak with Turquoise Moon multiple times, I tried talking things out and being reasonable with her, but instead she was aggressive, insulting, disrespectful, made completely baseless accusations and got into multiple arguments with other people, I don't see how her behaviour was at all acceptable. What? Rage? If you think I'm angry then I honestly don't know what to tell you because that's not the case, I don't see how anything I've said would've given you that impression. Anyways, I hope this clears things up, I don't have any interest in getting into long, drawn out backs and forths over this, it's just a game, it's not worth getting upset over.

At my first playthrough of Zestiria, I always wonder into places and I commonly felt like "Am I supposed to go to this dungeon right now?" And then I faced a monster +20 level higher than me, telling me that I'm not in the right place. That's not how you supposed to design a game world! You gotta make sure that the player is guided to the right place, because you're playing an open world game with linear game progression. There are also some Mutanized Hellions which are quite powerful by the time to see it, so then you skip it so then you fight it later. But then after you return, it seriously underpowered compared to your party which now already significantly leveled up. Thankfully all of this was fixed in Berseria. Bamco outright made the areas separated so then you can't go everywhere you like, and unlock areas by progression. Also Code Red monsters are properly leveled against the party by the time you see it, so you can fight them at an equal ground.

It's been a while, and I didn't finish it but I got the vibe that Berseria took a step back on the good points. I just remember generic caves and world areas that didn't feel as open. This was very interesting, I never drew the connection between the bland dungeons and the free-roaming camera introduced in Xillia. Maybe because I did not attribute the trend of linear environmental design to Xillia per se. One of my biggest problems with Graces (which still had fixed camera angles) was exactly its immersion-breaking hallway-style overworld, and thought that this ‘philosophy’ had simply carried over to the Xillias and Zestiria. Xillia had some memorable and complex dungeons like Gandala and the ESS Zenethra, but I do agree that dungeon design has been on a steep decline for the past several games (since Graces or even before). The elemental temples in Zestiria were a very welcome step up for that reason, they brought some interconnected spatial reasoning back combined with stellar music. Flaming Bonds is up there with my favourite tracks in the franchise.

Xillia was my first tales game and did a good job in showing me how he game series goes but didn't need two paths as cut away would have been fine for Jude and millia. Overall abyss xillia graces and vesperia were my favorite in the series for each being great in some way seeing graces having the best combat system. Abyss and xillia the best villains who would make heroes for themselves as the God generals and chimeriad were great people in story overall while vesperia in the weapon system was great so I hope Arise does a mix of them all being huge.

Velvet many new fans think is the best but like xillia I feel it's a gateway game to introduce fans to the series. Still one of my favorites but not the best overall compared to graces gameplay or abyss and xillia in enemy characterization as I though all the games made enemies who feel like main characters with complete kits and backstory like the god general and chimeriad being the best overall group to mirror the main cast having one on one rivals overall. Bersteria enemies should have been fought more as Oscar was empty with 2 fights same as his sister and they had many chances for it.

Story was cute overall being a family and kid versions was one of the best things it ever did to connect to the cast better. Gameplay wise in order of best. Graces abyss xillia vesperia bersteria Symphonia are my favorite in combat system. I ordinarily like puzzles, but I suppose what put me off about the Symphonia dungeons were two things: the interruptions of combat encounters each time I tried to focus on a puzzle (or am I wrong? It's been a couple of years now), having to run through the dungeon to try something new to solve a puzzle in dungeons with puzzles spanning multiple rooms, and the general concept of the game being an RPG, yet your attributes do not help you in any way, shape or form, instead relying on IRL "attributes" as the sole means of affecting this part of the game.

Gonna have to respectfully disagree, while I don't think it's an inherently poor idea because as you say there are western RPGs that utilize it, I personally don't think it works with Tales specifically. I think that type of system makes more sense in Western RPGs, because those games are more directly inspired by the mechanics of tabletop RPGs, wherein many elements outside of combat are dictated by stats and dice rolls, such as persuading someone or being able to lockpick a door, which isn't as common in most JRPGs.

I'll say, while zestiria doesn't have the best gameplay, I've been replaying it again recently and the battles aren't that bad, I've actually been having fun with them, it's just a game where you won't be hard comboing and making a ton of button presses to do so, it's more so chill gameplay, you do a combo and the enemies do an attack, you take turns and in your turn you do your best to dodge all damage The only thing that really annoys me about the game is that armatization doesn't feel like an option but something you absolutely need to use, no questions asked, if you want to stand a chance against enemies, even if they don't have an elemental weakness, you just do much more damage and have around 2x your regular hp while armatizes, it's ridiculous. Anyways, other than that, the only other complaint I can think about is that the combat can become stale rather quick, due to the combat not being very deep, but in 20+ hours so far I've not run into that issue But the strengths of zestiria, in my opinion, is the story, I'm about 2/3 of the way through and the story is so much better than I remember, it tells a tale of a man who has been put into the role of a martyr willingly but without fully knowing what that entails and the story explores that theme and doesn't pull any punches against sorey, from extortion, to manipulation, to impossible decisions, to forgiveness, this game has been impressing me with the quality of the story. Lastly, no surprise here, but the characters are amazing, Edna's dynamic with the whole group is amazing, dezel's story is great, lailah can be a goofball when if comes to the oath, yes, but she also knows when to be serious and be there for people, rose is the boss, even characters that you think would be generic like mikleo and sorey are great and have their own quirks that make them stand out from the rest, sorey might be pure, but he isn't naive, Mikleo might get made fun of a lot but he also retaliates sometimes, not letting people make him the core of the joke all the time. All in all from what I've played so far I think I gave zestiria too much slack, yes the fusing mechanic is annoying and yes the combat isn't as engaging as other tales games, but the story and characters are still great and might I say close to the best the series have to offer

    1. After you beat the base game, there are a series of character quests you can do afterwards, those quests are not voiced. I think saying they "gave up" isn't the right choice of words, it's more likely that it wasn't within the budget. 2. Probably just due to bad timing and because it was 2D game, so Namco might've suspected the game wouldn't do as well at the time compared to a 3D entry. 3. If you want to play an official copy, Phantasia on GBA is available, but is the worst version of the game, you can also play the SNES original and PS1 remakes of Phantasia if you're willing to emulate and patch them with fan translations. Destiny 1 is available in english, but not Destiny 2. Don't be confused with the Tales of Destiny 2 we received on the PS1, that game is actually Tales of Eternia, which you can also get on PSP. 4. Hearts R is in english, but not the Vita version of Innocence You can, however, play on an emulator, a fan made translation for the DS version of Innocence. I've personally not played Innocence yet, but I did play some of Hearts R and honestly I didn't like it very much. Hearts R is beloved by some fans though, so you might like it more than me.

I liked it too. I don't care if it doesn't represent the other Tales... shouldn't they let us enjoy this game without stressing on all the negative opinions? The negative reviews are more stressful than the combat system itself, kkk.

@@DanielSantosAnalysis im sorry, but thats just the truth. This "puzzle" isnt really a big Deal, u can turn your camera and see where eyes are, and no, they arent really hidden much. Its perfectly fine to go through the whole dungeon, without getting spottet once, as long as u use your camera. If that dungeon was a Problem for you, the Problem was you, not the game. @@RealEvilLordExdeath I understand that you didn't have a problem with the dungeon, that's fine, but just because you didn't have the same problem, that doesn't mean others didn't or that their experiences are invalid. This wasn't just me, many people have told me that they also disliked the dungeon for the same reasons. Insulting other people's intelligence over a dungeon and acting like you're more intelligent is ridiculous behavior, be better than that.

@@DanielSantosAnalysis no problem, just made me wonder, because older games like Symphonia for example have dungeon Puzzles that are a million times worse and such time wasters, most of them i just google because i don't have any joy doing them, So a Dungeon where all i have to do is "press button before going over some plates" is much less frustrating.

@@RealEvilLordExdeath I didn't find any of Symphonia's dungeons to be as bad as the water temple in Zestiria. I'm not saying all the dungeons in Symphonia were great, but the water temple sticks out to me as being worse than anything in that game by comparison.

I got this game day one, I got to where Zaveid joins, and I just couldnt keep it up anymore. I just beat this game today after forcing myself to beat it to compare it to the X, the superior anime adaption IMO. I am the biggest fan of this series, I white knight all of the issues with each game to a degree. But this game's combat is so god awful that I couldnt keep playing it anymore at the time. Combined with the terrible balance of getting one shot by every boss, while simultaneuously doing pisspoor damage if you didnt grind hours and hours to make equipment good enough to hurt them, also makes it a slog. As well as enemies just armoring through combos midway, while also taking no damage, makes pacing of these fights with armored invincible attacks they throw at all times. I cant even comment on the story, other than to watch the X anime.

The Tales developers need to play YS VIII and learn what real level design is all about. I think Tales is becoming dry and uninspired. I mean the series has always remained consistent throughout in many ways to the point that it can be difficult to distinguish them at times but the thing that is constantly changing is the combat system and the skill leveling systems. Tales Of Zesteria and Berseria both give the impression that the well has dried out. Both games have so much fluff it's crazy and kinda overbearing but the problem is that none of it really adds anything to the experience, it just feels like it's there to cover up the fact that it's "just another tales game" The silly thing is that the well hasn't dried out at all and that Tales has always remained consistent for better or worse, you know what you're getting into gameplay wise, there were minor tweaks but nothing that really broke away from the core of the game's design. Zesteria and Berseria are the two games that decided to break away from that core and that's why I don't enjoy the games anymore. I still think that deviating from the side view battle system was a mistake. There's way more potential in terms of flexibility when you only have to deal with side to side movement and it's that flexibility that allows for more combo variation than that of Star Ocean and YS. Plus the perspective was fixed to the side, sure you had Graces where you could move around but the camera was zoomed back far enough to the point that you could easily judge the distance between you and the enemies. In both Zesteria and Berseria the camera is right behind you. While this wouldn't be an issue in Star Ocean and YS which are both built with this in mind, in a Tales game it just feels wrong. Tales is all about using the directional inputs for executing different attacks but with this camera perspective, doing so feels really awkward to the point that Berseria outright removed it and replaced it with Valkyrie Profile controls which do not fit the nature of the game at all. As for the dungeons, they look like something I would make in the Skyrim Creation Kit. Just a giant maze of emptiness. It wouldn't take much effort to recreate most dungeons in the Skyrim Creation Kit at all. I will say though that the towns in modern Tales games have improved drastically. Fennmont looks absolutely stunning in Xillia. Vesperia's towns were so tiny despite the massive scope they had. Towns feel more alive in Tales games now and that's the only real saving grace in the level design department. I think Falcom have kinda taken a big shot at Namco this gen with YS VIII taking the real time ARPG throne from the Tales series and the fact that their games are getting really popular. Namco are going to have a much harder time competing now and I don't think Arise's new engine will be enough to maintain the series popularity streak but at the end of the day, Tales was absolutely dominating last generation so their reign kinda has to come to an end. I think the devs should reflect on the series more and figure out what can bring it back to its former glory.
