This is great! I love the transitions between groovy stuff and the more atmospheric moments in your opening. I also thought you two played quite well together! There were some very cool hits and unison moments.

Thanks so much! The instrument is one I picked up on tour in Japan, but similar instruments on the market are Meinl's "Woodpecker" (from their NINO line of instruments), and LP's "Snocker". I have both of these instruments as well, but the one in the video was a handmade one. It resonates much more, giving it volume and richness in tone. I have no idea what the actual name for this instrument is.

Thanks for checking out the video Alex. I agree that there is nothing like Billy Cobham, playing his song... I guess, as is the case with anyone playing their own song. I had the honor of hanging out with Billy Cobham when he came to see me perform in Switzerland on the MJ Immortal tour. What a great guy! To be hanging with him, and my bandmates Jonathan Moffett and Greg Philinganes was very cool. :)

That intro from Taku reminds me of the multiple drum sounds he did for chronic 2001 crazy

you are such an inspiration Mr Hirano. Conga playing has loss a lot of musicality lately ( just my opinion).......you bring it back........reminded me a little of Trilok Gurtu for some reason.

Thanks so much! Actually Trilok Gurtu is a huge influence for me, especially for playing colors and soundscapes. The John McLaughlin albums "Live At Royal Festival Hall" and "Que Alegria" both featuring Trilok were big influences back in my college years...

I'm a huge fan of Billy Cobham's and know Spectrum well! It was definitely a thrill to get to hang out with him when the MJ Immortal tour was in Switzerland. Also, it was definitely fun performing this tune with Trevor. Many thanks to him for inviting me to play on his Modern Drummer Festival presentation.

Gonna have to respectively disagree with you my man. He only crash rides a tiny part of the song. Did you notice the 3 whole minutes he leaves for "sonic space" for Taku in the beginning. yeah that 22'' stadium dark ride is a little washy but doesn't take away from Taku's sound at all. Trevor Lawrence is one of the most musical drummers out there, not annoying at all. This video is titled "Taku Hirano" but its from Trevor's set.

This drummer is a little annoying. He does not leave enough sonic space for Taku (the percussionist). Should have selected more logical sound choices - like a dryer cymbal approach instead of legato crash ridin
