I have been following your video's and done many cuttings exactly as you show.Thankyou so much for explaining everything so well.....I now have lots more plants& some in bud already.

Thank you so much for making a video that includes several stages. Almost all of the other videos about propagating plans only show the first step, and you are left wondering if it actually worked/was successful.

I wish I saw this sooner, thank you so much for sharing. Now I don't have to throw away the little ones that sprout in fall.

Me too. I dug up everything and threw the cutting out. We are in the low 30's at night. I saved the tubers to plant next year.

WOW! Thank you for filming and trying the autumn cuttings out too. Mine have not been that much of a succes, but I do have some that are alive... But I have ´many problems with mildew, and I dont even grow them outside - they are all inside in my livingroom in the windowsill. I am about to build myself a propagator, and then I will try again in the spring. Great information about the growlights - they will be put on my wishlist :D And then in addition to being completely and utterly impressed with your skills as a gardner, I would like to tell you how much I enjoy your voice and relaxed narrating. Thank you for this valuable information. I have a favorite dahlia that is throwing a sport variety in another color of itself. I wanted to take a few cuttings to see if I can stabilize the new color. Thank you for you help in learning how I might do this. Ta, from Seattle!

This was a highly informative video. Thank-you for the care you took in providing as much detail as you did. Not very many videos can be found on taking cuttings from dahlia plants in the fall. I am trying it but not with the success rate you are having. Was inspired by your methods. Such fun.

Hi Kelli, Thank you for your kind comments. The idea of taking autumn cuttings was really an experiment and subsequently was not all that successful. I managed to overwinter a quantity of plants only to have many of them die in the spring when I potted them on into a more fertiliser rich potting compost. I ended up with about five plants in total that went on to flower this year, so a worthwhile project but some more thought is required. Barry

Yes of course I will. There are so many question marks surrounding hollow stem cuttings, not least those voiced by Simon above.

I learned a lot of great info from your Dahlia cuttings video and I have so much more to learn! I fell in love with Dahlias last year (2014) and feel like I'm running behind this year!! Thanks again keep up the good work. I'm inspired to buy a green house and propagator a now :)

what does he mean by "propagator?"

I always thought you need a little piece of the tuber as well to have a successfull cutting.

With out rooting powder the roots come from one side only. With powder roots come round all the stem.

Very Informative video, very much thanks to you for this... I just want to know two things, 1. what type of grow lights you used (I mean the brand), and second where from I can get this propagator and grow lights.

part of the reason people stopped using rooting hormone is because you can root them with willow water we just grab some willow sticks that are thin chop than in quarters just sticks really and boil water and pour it over them

As always a great informative video. Thank you for sharing. I would be interested in finding out more about the grow lights. What wattage are you using? Also it will be interesting to see how the plants develop. I have found that whilst cuttings taken with hollow stems will in fact root and indeed flower they sometimes do not make a tuber and if they do the tuber often is blind the following season. At least you will have an opportunity of taking further non hollow cuttings. Simon.

Hi Simon, Thanks for your comments - glad you found it interesting. The model I bought for this experiment is just fourteen watts (14w) so very low powered. I bought mine from www.growlights.co.uk/ but since then I have found them cheaper elsewhere ;-( Kind regards, Barry

If you get frosts then, yes they need to be dug up and stored.

What is the name of this rare variety you are propagating please ?

Use a pane of glass to use as a cutting board, better forboth the fingers and the cutting. Cutting the leaves in half just make an open 'wound' that make the cutting to oose moist urettferdig, i. e bigger loss of moisture and larger strain on the cutting.

Mine are getting too wet in the propogator unfortunately, don’t think they will survive. I’m removing the lid in the day but leaves feel like they are soaked through

Hi! I’ve done some cuttings sealed in a plastic bag for humidity... they lost all leaves but now have some new leaves coming through. (Which was a nice surprise!) Would you let some air in now or keep them in the bag? They seem like they’re going a bit sludgy!

The potting-on compost is just a straight multipurpose compost - I use 'Humax Original' ' - excellent compost without bin rubbish. Regards, Barry

I haven't seen any new ones on what's happening in your garden or allotment. I know I'm being cheeky here but your videos are one of the best in terms of detailed information for a new gardener. We are trying a similar experiment and frankly I do not expect a great success rate. I have started off fairly thick stalk cuttings in nutrient rich potting soil. The bizarre thing is that the stalks that I thought were good for the compost heap only are producing leaves. Perhaps what stands against this whole process is the natural rhythm of the plant-which may need a period of dormancy. But since you got five plants to survive and flower, I think the project was worthwhile indeed.

What a bad service by Google MALTA, some one needs to be fired.

Especially LED. They produce hardly any heat and the spread is minimal. I mean that any area outside the 'footprint' of the unit gets NO benefit. The lights need to be mere inches away and raise every day if needed.
