Taking a picture vs making a picture - how far can you deviate from reality?

Фильм және анимация

Photography faces a dilemma - should you take your photos or make your photos. How much freedom should you allow yourself when decide how to portray something? In this video I try to spark a discussion about taking a picture vs making a picture. What is ethical, what is allowed, how far can you deviate from reality? These are some of the questions where I appreciate your feedback.

Sunday at 1:30 in the morning..We're finally getting sun in the city. Did I take advantage of winter light as promised? It's gone now...I take pictures and find out what's wrong with them. Then I take more pics. They get better. It's a life project. I watched this on a large retina screen. I think certain work requires scale to appreciate. Your work does. It becomes more immersive. But the rules of composition will always apply. We aren't working with successive imagery as movie makers are. It all has to happen within one frame. I recommend reading Proust Was A Neuroscientist.

Hi! Great to hear from you and thanks for watching. The winter is almost over, so now we'll have new photo opportunities. Cheers!

An interesting video. At the most basic level, do we really understand what 'reality' is and, even more fundamentally, does it really exist? I've heard it said that no two people see colours the same way, so how can we hope to produce an 'accurate' representation? Is black and white going too far? I've been a keen photographer for 50 years and the only 'rule' I have is that I will not use ai prompts to create an image; nor will I use generative fill. I'm not, for one moment, suggesting that I'm 'right' or that others should do the same. However, unless light photons hit a light sensitive surface, it can't be deemed to be photography. As I'm only interested in photography, that type of AI is of no interest to me. I can live with using AI as a tool to reduce noise, sharpen and other techniques which don't materially affect the photographic content (only enhance what's already there) but I want the scene to look how I (pre)visualised it. Also, unless we're shooting professionally to a customer's brief, we should allow ourselves the benefit of doing what we want - so long as we don't try to defraud ourselves or our audience that an image which has had items added / removed, skies replaced, fake shafts of light added, etc is the 'real deal'. For me (and probably 99% of other photographers), integrity and honest is key.

Hi Paul! Thank you for your very interesting and thoughtful response. I agree with you when you talk about what you think constitutes photography and how to go about it. I especially liked your 'photos hitting a light sensitive surface' as a definition of photography. I might add that I'd also like to have a lens involved in the process (although we know that pinhole photography is a very valid form of photography without lenses). Kind regards!
