my squad was north at the airfield for most of this and we didn't encounter nearly this much resistance. When we finally got there with a tank and an IFV, we were wondering why literally everyone had been called to Provins and then we just see all of that carnage from the top of hill north of it.

I remember being in an APC on the way to remains of Provins after dying there twice to Innie Armor. Everyone was talking about how short they lasted with one guy saying he only lasted a minute, I then honestly replied "You guys lasted a minute?" and everyone just busted their gut 🤣

Wow, my 3rd ignis op was provins and I wanted to die inside. I had 4 grenades left at the end of the operation.

The UNSC went full Imperial Guard at Provins.

I know it's been an entire year since, but I just realized, the fight in Provins is literally the fight from project wingman, they sent a fighter squadron to the middle of the sea, to intercept the enemies, so the enemies sent reinforcements, so they started to do the same, until the entire airforce of both countries met in a single fight again, in the middle of nowhere, that was like in the artic seas

The Battle of Provins is basically the Ignis Corp equivalent of the entirety of Vietnam, Verdun and every other incredibly horrible and bloody battle both in human history, and fictional history.

More important than that. Two roads went into the capital city, and if the Innies took that it’s all over. Two roads, one went through a tiny little place called Provins. The Insurrectionists picked that and through almost everything at it.

I wasn't there for most of the horrors of provins, once taking the town and second being dragged there by Jays Jeep....both times ended with me being eviscerated by some kind of explosive

I LOVE THE BATTLE OF Provins. Please give us all of the footage u have of it. I like such situations where everything goes apeshit and the players are actually losing/being overrun, if it werent for the constant reinforcements!

I don't think Provins had any value once multiple squads of men died there.

It actually did! the Battle of Provins happened because it sat on one of two (2) roads into the capital and the enemy AI threw everything they had into pushing through it. there are times in war were places have enough strategic value to warrant just throwing reinforcements into it as needed.

I feel like any time from here on out that someone goes "this is hell!" in an ARMA 3 op, you reply with "let me tell you the story of Provins..."

Reminds me of an rp server from space engineers. I refer to it as the defence of Watcher 9. The stations name was watcher and it was the 9th of May. The server had 25 people, plus 3 admins who were the attackers. Every single ship was destroyed, and the few who escaped and brought more ships were also killed. The station survived, but there were 3 survivors. I was one of them. I then leaned there was gonna be another one of these battles. However, I died in the say down

Somehow I feel like using the lull between waves against Provins to push up to the hill and try to establish a better defensive line there might've been worth it... Because being stuck behind a few houses DOWNHILL from the enemy? That just seemed like a very bad idea.

this reminds me from back when I was playing with my old arma unit, the 1st Commando Battalion, we used operation optre and the whole conquest gamemode thingymajig (love the gamemode, cant remember its name tho) and we had set up an FOB as a staging ground to invade a portion of the island, and for a good solid Hour we had to ward of tanks, IFVs, Infantry, Warthogs, Pelicans, and even more infantry. it was absolute carnage yet we somehow managed to hold the FOB and survive. (If I remember correctly however the FOB was lost in the time that I had gone to bed and had woken up, I still refuse to return to those situations, the fear I felt and the agony that occured around me, although beautiful to me now, was absolute horror to younger me)

Ah, the mystical battle of Provins; we meet at last.

14 hours of footage and you came up with a 2 part 20ish minutes? Come on! You know there's more. (this one was good :D )

So few casualties! The Imperial Guard would like to know your secret.

I'm mainly commenting this to invite others to fill me in if I'm wrong, since I don't know anything about the operational protocols nor procedures of these guys and their war efforts. What I'm seeing wrong here is a lack of advanced intel on the enemy, probably no scouting done before hand. There's no creative thinking on the parts of anyone in charge here, not even a thought to falling back for the sake of regrouping. What I would have done is all of the above. Once I see the AO under such ridiculous seige, We'd fall back, regroup with as many troops as we could scrape together, send in teams for scouting no the town itself but the surrounding area, perimeter of the town, and countryside. What they're looking for: 1) enemy positions 2) enemy numbers 3) enemy equipment (armour, artillery, birds, MGs, etc) 4) travel paths Using this information I'd dispatch teams to every relevant locations, team compositions and equipment relevant to what they'll be taking down. They'll ambush enemies en route to the primary objective, dealing with them in descending order of priority: 1) Birds/Aerial vehicles 2) Armour/ground vehicles 3) heavy equipment, such as mortars, artillery, MGs, etc. 4) troops These ambushes, as said, will be as the enemy is en route to the primary target, so no one will be taking the roads in. They'll use the terrain, if possible, to their best advantage. Once a team has dispatched their targets, they'll leave behind troops to further secure and surveil these routes into the primary objective, while the rest move onto any other secondary objectives they may have, and if none remain they will instead move onto the primary objective, calling in their progress as they do. Once close to the primary objective, all teams will wait outside at a pre-determined perimeter and hold, waiting for everyone else to fall into position. Once in position, the final stage of this operation would begin. Anyone with binoculars will scout the town, identifying targets, and if there are none, one third of available teams/personnel would move it to secure the town. If there are any enemies not spotted at range, the troops moving in will call them out and with the support of their perimeter teams begin to clear the objective. If there are absolutely no enemies at the objective, one third of these personnel will remain behind as perimeter guard as the other two thirds move in on the goal to accomplish their final objectives. If there are enemies easily spotted from the perimeter from the beginning of the final phase, defer to the above priority list and eliminate targets accordingly. Approaching the town/objective will be by our favourite "rule of thirds", one third of each team begins their approach, when they're halfway there another third will begin their approach, after which the remaining third will stay behind to further secure the perimeter. When all is said and done, not only should the town be secure but the surrounding area as well. I'd like to get into team compositions and squad divisions, but this has gone on for long enough so I'll wrap this up by reminding anyone reading this that it is written in the hopes that someone will tell me I'm wrong somehow or missed something. I will say this, I know they're mostly goofing off, but this is just what I would do, not what's likely to ever happen.

Sounds like a lot of moving parts, which lends well to the sayings about the best laid plans and not surviving contact with the enemy. Especially when you have a god spontaneously creating more enemies to fight when they feel like it that you couldn't have known to plan for in advance.

I think you assume the mission goal and situation was smaller and less complex than it was during the OP. The AO was at least the full Everon island and few smaller island surrounding it, the point of the Operation was to conquer the entire map in 48 hours, with the AI being able to spawn and launch attack to reconquer lost objective. By the times of the battle of Provins they already had secured a good third of the Everon island including the capital of Montignac ,only the east and northern part of the island were left to conquer. From what I could gather in comments and the video at the times of the battle Ignis was taking offensive action to secure the nothern part of the island and the Everon Airport to close a front this made senses as it was the smaller and easier front. Provins was simply a defensive position alongside the eastern front securing a road leading toward the capital of Montignac. What started the battle was the Innies lauching waves after waves to retake Provins and Montignac through Provins. Your plan is nice and sound, but it is based around the idea of having one fortified position to take back and don't really take into consideration that part of your army is tied up into an offensive, and maybe even defending other postion, or that the enemy is going to continue their offensive once the position taken, severly limiting the amount of times you have to do recon and plan a counter attack. If the enemy toook provins it was only a matter of times before they launched attack toward Montignac, which would threaten the only road leading to the northern part of the Island and threatening the offensive against Everon Airport, and threaten the only road connecting the town of Entre Deux which was also under their control. This also split open their front, With Provins under their control they have secured a direct road connecting Every frontline city (Entre Deux Provins Igari and Morton) and the capital city of Montignac. without provins if they want to move troops from Montignac/ Entre Deux to Igari/Morton they would have to either take the long way around, pass through rough terrain or take back Provins. If there wasn't only 48 hours to take the island, I'd say this strategy could've worked. Unfortunately the Innies didn't leave Ignis any time to do what you suggested and kept sending in more waves of armour and mechanized infantry to try and take Provins,, which Ignis could only respond to by sending more reinforcements to Provins.

Provins was our Somme.
