We saved our contractor a ton of $ by checking measurements twice. The framing on our exterior wall was uncorrected installed ... out by 4 inches! The framer wouldn't listen to us even though we showed him the plans. We contacted the contractor to explain that the lower cabinets would be extending into the doorway by 3 inches. If we didn't check the measurements, the drywall would have been installed, plastered, and painted before the cabinets would have been in place to see that the work would have to be demo'd. Lesson learned was to be involved in the whole process - the contractor trusted their employee however, they really weren't completing their task correctly.

I knew I had found the right designer when she measured all of our small appliances and large pots and asked us where we would prefer to have them. She also measured my cookbooks to be sure the large-format ones would fit on the bookshelves I wanted over my kitchen desk.

I love this video. It’s a blend of everything you’ve already shared over the years in one place. Looking forward to the next in the series. I can honestly say that your channel was so helpful in getting me to the kitchen I have today (finished in April). All planned, assembled, installed, and finished ourselves! Was it easy? No. Was it Fun? Also, no. But it was all worth it in the end. Having a functional kitchen will always be worth it. I found an RTA cabinet company that offered cabinet sizes down to the 1/8 of an inch. Really made the difference in creating a truly custom space that fits my house. And no corner cabinets!

Curious what RTA company you used and where they are located?

I always love hearing about kitchen design from Jason Sudeikis. Another great video! We've been struggling with our remodel design for a while and this helped a lot!

Thank you so much for doing the drawings & 3D for my kitchen. We had someone who started some basic drawings, but were incorrect. Yours helped my designer and I to see things in real time during our Zoom call with you, as the placement of things may sound good, but once we saw them in 3D they tuned it into reality. Your professional experience guided me with some details I wouldn’t have known about. No measurement mistakes now. All of your measurements will be double and triple checked as well. So far they are all spot on! 😃

Re: asking customer about budget, this is me daily: Me: what’s your budget? Them: I don’t know. Me: here is your price. Them: ohhh, no, that’s not in our budget. 🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️

While that is true, it is also just about impossible to budget if you don't know price ranges of materials. Th e designer should be able to provide ballpark ranges so people CAN plan a budget. After all, the designer is the pro, the client is not! A simple copy of lists of relative costs is a valuable tool to present to a clueless client on the first visit.

That would totally be me. I don't know the value of these things, or what to expect in my future kitchen. So, I would prefer a "if you choose X, it will cost you Y." type of choice.

Here's the thing with the budget. I have X amount of money saved up. I want to remodel my kitchen, but I'd also like to help pay for my kids' weddings, go on vacations every once in a while, buy a new car at some point when mine breaks down, retire someday, etc. I don't have a separate pot for each item, so if someone asks me how much I have for my kitchen, I have no idea how much of that pot is needed. If I say $3,000 they're going to laugh in my face. If I say $300,000 they're going to recommend the most expensive appliances and natural stones and fixtures available, which I don't necessarily want. The point is, I have NO IDEA what number I need to pull out of that pot for the kitchen. So rather than asking, "What's your budget?" it would be much more helpful to ask what the client is hoping to accomplish and give price ranges. Or give options such as "Well, we could refinish the cabinets you already have for about $X, or we could install new ones for $Y to $Z, depending on what type you choose. Or you could even say something like, "We can do a complete gut job and replace everything for around $A-B per square foot, or we can use the appliances and cabinets you have and reface everything to make it look better for about $C-D per square foot." That makes it more difficult for you than simply asking for a budget, but it gives the client the ability to choose based on the cost that they're comfortable with.

Consulting an architect or designers is useless without double triple quadruple checking the measurements of the house
