I was so pleased that I found a designer for our kitchen renovation that actually measured items to be sure they had a home: large pots and skillets in drawers, most used and also large "small" appliances, large cookbooks to be sure they fit on the new bookshelf, various drawer depths for bulky utensils like strainers, etc. I was all for putting everything away quickly once the renovation was completed, but my husband had the genius idea to put items away as we used the new kitchen "normally". We had the opened boxes in the dining room and as items were cleaned after use, we put things away where they fit closest to the area we used them. Our kitchen was finished just before the new year and I still get a happy thrill every time we use it.

The primary function of a microwave is for older children and younger teens to heat milk drinks and reheat snacks, so having it down low works for them. If you're using it a lot for baking related activities such as melting butter and you feel the low microwave isn't working for you, consider a second microwave. You don't need the big expensive sort! Also Mark your wife is a treasure. If she were an employee in a business you were running, she'd be the one you made a point of giving regular bonuses and raises to. You will never regret making sure she knows you appreciate how awesome she is!

I Love everything on your list that I have done to my kitchen so far. I give it a total score of 50% only because I am only about half done with the total remodel. I do get to use my kitchen wile I am remodeling it because I pick bite sized projects to do so I am not without the use of my kitchen except for whatever project I have decided to take on next. Right now I am installing a large single bowl stainless commercial sink with a drainboard on each side. I have already custom made many accessories to turn it into a work station sink. I know I broke all of the rules by designing, building and doing everything myself (this is why it is taking so long)/ Also this is my fist and last kitchen remodel.

Great video, love the interaction between you and Amy. My current kitchen is about a 60. One walkway that is only 27" and a cook top in an island under a skylight, so the only way to vent is a down draft which I loathe with an intense passion. Not enough pantry space. Not enough counter space. But I love how much natural light there is, and the placement of the fridge, microwave, dishwasher and sink works really well. My new kitchen is hopefully on track for installation starting in September. Bigger pantry, an island that is just cabinet and counter space, cooktop moved to a wall where it can properly vent to the roof, proper clearances, and lots of pullouts. I did go through the exercise of measuring EVERY SINGLE thing in the kitchen and figuring out where each thing belongs in the new layout, which resulted in changing some lower cabinets from doors with pullouts to drawers. Some things better in pullouts, some things better in drawers. For people contemplating remodel, be prepared to spend a lot of time in planning. I booked a consult with Mark in March, then met with two other designers in April. Everybody offered such good advice, and each one contributed an oh, I didn't think of that, what a great idea moment. Get as many people as feasible to take a look. I had friends look too. For aesthetics. Sorry Mark, I just do not like white at all. Have not since childhood. New cabinets will be medium toned cherry, shaker style. I love the warmth of natural wood, and I think they will my heart sing.

I really enjoyed your interaction with your wife. I especially appreciated her input on height....I'm 4'11". Mark, I think I've watched long enough now, and heard often enough about the microwave, to give you a little input: just pull the thing out and put in a drawer! Or use it as an appliance shelf...Anything but a dead mic! lol. Thanks for another great topic.

Yup, still P.O.'ed that our kitchen designer talked me out of slightly deeper cabinets (14') for our pantry wall. As a consequence, we have to leave the microwave out on the counter and the InstantPot and airfryer are in a hall closet. Grrrr....

You talked about the counter top space: 36 inches preparation space 15-24 inches landing zone But you did not give any numbers for service/social and storage areas. I guess it's because it depends on every family needs, but since I am in the planning stage of my new kitchen, I would like to have numbers...

My favourite thing about our kitchen is that there is no stead zone to get trapped if the fridge is open or someone is cooking. So I hate U shaped kitchens. We have an L shaped kind t hen and an island in the open L area. So if I am putting groceries away and the fridge is open, others can get to the sink and stove..

IMO, shallow drawers amount to clutter. I purposely had two shallow drawers converted into one deep drawer with a vertical divider. By doing so, I was able to store my toaster on one side, and two baskets containing cleaning "quick-up" rags. The toaster has an extended cord and rests on an elevated metal pan. After use, let cool, and close the drawer. My rule is if an appliance is used only once/day, it should be stashed and not take up valuable counter space.

I'm also thinking that your wife might be the perfect person to figure out what to put on pull down units and what one can get away with storing elsewhere (since she's the person who's organized, and the cost of those units can add up). I'm thinking about getting a pull down unit in my kitchen (mainly for for resale purposes to appeal to a short potential buyer, since I'm almost 6 feet tall), but I can't figure out what to put up there. I realize there's no one-size-fits-all answer to this but looking at the possibilities may be helpful. Just random musings.

Watching a man who has a strong partnership with his wife and also a successful career is very soothing to my motherly anxieties.
