Re the pictures at 6:00 - I honestly find the left picture stronger than the right one! The parallel lines of the steps, the four cats approximately equal distance apart, the two centered rectangles on the house, the vertical rhythm of sky - house - cats - stairs. Sure, it follows standard composition rules less than the one on the right, but I guess this really goes to show how subjective this all really is. For the other side-by-sides I 100% agree.

I think a good way to learn about image composition is to look at paintings by artists such as Caravaggio. A painter spends a lot of time creating each composition. They call some paintings masterpieces for a reason.

As with almost anything in life, one must know and understand the rules - in order to break them. Any fool can get lucky, perhaps many times. But in almost any field, in this case photographic imagery, a true master is well aware of every aspect of their composition - from a single capture to a defining style/visual signature that the rest of us recognize in our heroes (and villains)…But they ALL know their work so well to be at one with every aspect and detail intimately. This includes the ‘rules’ that even the most arrogant egos scoff. But we already knew that..

I am thoroughly enjoying all your tutorials. I have just bought the V-Lux 5 - so Leica is very new to me. I have always had Canon SLR Mk3 and L Lenses - all very good but very heavy to lug around thats why I decided on a Bridge camera `and decided on Leica.

Thanks for your inspiring tutorial. It actually reminds me an interesting painting by Miro which has only a single blue dot in the entire frame. Guess where he had “painted” it at?

Very informative video, well presented. I do have a question about the image of the black tanks and white church (Falklands ?). I find the white object to the left of the tanks distracting. I know you had to have purposely left it in the image, so would you please explain your reason(s)?

Frankly I didn't really pay much attention it but now you mention it I can't un-see it! It's a sign explaining the history of the site. I rarely remove objects in post as I tend to shoot documentary work, but this could have been a valid retouch. I don't find it particularly distracting myself, but I suppose others might.
