I have a Merrimen boat! He was an amazing man and took the time with a spoiled teenager in the 90’s!
Ha ha nice, I used to hunt these kilos IRL once upon a time.
The Seaview...so awesome to see that model on the wall.
Bob is the true man who made rc subs into a huge hobby we all love so much.
I'm into rc planes and cars. This video blew my mind. Amazing stuff.
Really interesting video on how rc submarines work, and also like the realistic model of the Seaview from Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea.
thanks for another extremely interesting and well built sub.The maneuverability of this design seems to be above average. When I hear the name David Merriman the first thought that crosses my mind is and seeing the big Seaview behind you on the shelf that Mr. Merriman actually did some involved restoration on the 17 foot largest Seaview miniature used in the movie and later tv series Voyage to the bottom of the sea. it's really a treat to see this as another example of his skills.
One of the things that really impresses me with these boats that you never mention is the weathering, it's very good and realistic. Most RC modelers neglect this completely and the ones that don't tend to over do it. I'd love to see some demos on how you accomplish your effects!

If only I had created videos outlining how I weather my models. ;)

I completely agree with your weathering comment. I’ve been modeling since I was a young boy and I love it. Even I struggle with this concept. You can QUICKLY take it from underdone to overdone with the stroke of a brush I swear.
Really nice. Never knew that RC subs existed.
❤thank you for your time and video
Great to see men doing interesting and worthwhile activities 👍.
Over your right shoulder is the submarine from 'Voyage Under the Sea' (I think). One of my favourite sci-fi shows when I was shorter.
Nice. And a big, heart felt shout-out and thank-you to David Manley who produced this excellent kit.

Really cool stuff, mate! I don't believe RC Subs ever crossed my 40 year old mind until I saw this video in my recommended vids today, for some reason. This was fun

I thought that was your work, David!
That model of the seaview on the shelf looks good.
weathering is always nicer for streaking using the Oil dot way like he's done on this with the salt streaking! Still doesn't beat that cool seahound in the background! that's well cool uve build just a model of it in dry Dock for a ww2 diorama
much nicer than my sub... I have one of the old white and yellow NIKKO r/c subs.....
He's got the SEAVIEW!!!
kept on getting side tracked with that Oscar in the background 😂

1/96th scale. I offer a beautiful kit of that boat in the same scale.
I am starting this new hobby!
I'm curious you need the override switch for the leveller. I have three versions of pitch controller, including one from you(!) and they all permit direct control of the aft planes with channel 1 - or whatever - when you need it, no extra button required. Really interested in the 'depth cruiser' thing though. That would be a help...
@RCSubGuy
Жыл бұрын
Any time you manually command your planes that are attached to a pitch controller, you are overriding the unit. I didn't use an "extra button". That channel was stern planes. As it's on a non-proportional switch and not a stick, it can only command full rise or full dive, hence my calling it an override. Sorry for the confusion.
Very cool, just found this randomly. I love the technology you are using, but I have one question. How do you guys manage the roll torque? Are the planes enough to counter act it?
@RCSubGuy
Жыл бұрын
Torque roll can be managed statically via a large righting moment as a result of flotation and ballast, or dynamically with control surfaces, though in RC subs in general, modelers rarely go to those lengths.
I have seen on your channel scale torpedos as well as almost every type and kind of submarine. To include The big missile boats. However I have yet to see anyone actually launch a model rocket from a missile boat. Not from a submerged boat or even from an in the water surface boat. I think this would be a good project to see actually get done.
@RCSubGuy

I haven't done it myself (yet), but it's been done time and time again by others. Kevin McLeod has an awesome Oscar II that fires Estes-powered rockets.
Cool
how does the signal from the radio above the water get to the boats when submerged under the water and what kind of range can you get?
@RCSubGuy
Жыл бұрын
Low frequencies penetrate water quite well. Range is inversely proportional to depth. The deeper you go, the closer you need to be. You can get down 20 or 30ft in nice, clean, fresh water.
How do you control since radio waves don’t work in water easily?
@RCSubGuy
Жыл бұрын
Oh, really? They don't? ;) They work rather well in fresh water when broadcast at low frequency.
So Bob, question! I had a crazy idea of building a Gato Class submarine that's maximum allowable towable length behind my truck. I think that's around little over 20ish some odd feet. Think that's doable?
@RCSubGuy
Жыл бұрын
No reason it wouldn't be doable. It's all down to your time, talent and determination.
Voyage to the Bottom of the Pool. Can you put a camera in it, and make a sea drone?
3:30 But where do the little ppl go? There are no decks, i mean C'mon! 🤣
David Merriman....... the name that shall not be spoken.

Oh man the Seaview in the background! Magnetic linkage wow that's cool. After some ballast is vented and you want to pump in more gas for buoyancy, where does it get gas from the stern motor cell? Wouldn't that begin to create vacuum there?
@RCSubGuy
Жыл бұрын
It draws air from the surface via the intake in the sail. There is also a pressure vessel aboard that stores compressed gas for emergency surfacing.

how does the radio signal go through the water?

Using an AM radio does the trick but I don't know what he's using on this...
@RCSubGuy
Жыл бұрын
Low frequency radio waves penetrate fresh water fairly well over short distances. We use 75mhz here in North America
I can't find the post for the Seaview in your history... could you repost please ? I had an uncle who was an actor on that show.

I've done a smaller Seaview in the past, but the large one you're likely asking about is an upcoming project.
so this is a thing i just discovered exists
Sorry this is all I have to ask but... that music is driving me up a wall. I know it from some movie. What is that from? Thanks.

Music is thanks to Tom Martin with OBT Music and he created it specifically for me. Maybe it's close to what you're remembering?
Oy, it's 877 nice, шифр Палтус
Have you ever built a Porpoise class U.S. boat yet?
@RCSubGuy
Жыл бұрын
Don't think I have. You talking US or British? Porpoise is not a popular boat from a modeling perspective, and kits are only produced if it makes sense from a business perspective. If you're an avid and talented modeler, you can definitely build one yourself for your personal enjoyment, but not many would buy a kit of a sub class that is not well known...
Does it shoot torpedoos? do you have torpedo shooting rc subs...? that will be cool....!
@RCSubGuy
Жыл бұрын
In 1/96 scale, as this boat is, the torpedoes would be incredibly tiny. Doable? Yeah, maybe, but it would be exceptionally challenging. Lots of people have done 1/72 and larger scale weapons, however.
I keep wondering what that German sub to your left is, and if its real? Love your channel!
@RCSubGuy
Жыл бұрын
German Seehund midget submarine. Definitely a real boat. We're finishing up that build as we speak and hope to have a video on that soon. I also have the same boat that is twice as big in 1/6 scale...
Ok, the wire moving on its own at 02:47 is very freaky

Like model train guys, they have very realistic trains- you have a very realistic sub. BUT it gets ruined (just like the model trains) by the SPEED when running the model(s) It should be running at a 1/4 speed to make it look more realistic... JMO.
@RCSubGuy
Жыл бұрын
Sooo.... run it at slow speed, as I suggested and commented in the video (but you knew that 'cause you watched it all through, right?)
@walterhoffmann5462

Since the introduction of Digital Command Control, model railroaders have been able to operate at close to scale speeds and simulate the inertia of a fully loaded train while starting & stopping. I wonder if a DCC decoder could be adapted to the R/C Sub world in a similar fashion?
(pauses, smacks lips)
I love the model of the SEAVIEW. !!!!!
