Most of these commercial shelters have an important design weakness in that all it takes to trap occupants inside when a storm lands a tree or any other heavy objects on the door. Doors need to be vertical, sheltered, and even open inward to help prevent a blocked entrance.

@Brandi MacLaren You should be able to specify what you want. Most certainly avoid a door that opens upward. Think about what can land on it. All the stuff that blew away from other properties. Trees, limbs, trailers, kangaroos. :-)

I’m sure you would be able to install a setup with a hydraulic jack that would push the door open if something landed on top of it. Keep a couple of hydraulic jacks and a couple pieces of 4x4 or 6x6 in the shelter. There’s all sorts of ways that you could prepare for such a case, I know that I would.

Many years ago my great grandfather staked off a place in his yard, dug down about 10 feet with a backhoe, then put concrete blocks in it a door and steps that go to it and the most important thing he did was take a piece of sheet metal and put it on the top and place dirt back on top of it and also put a vent on the top and even ran electricity to at one point. That storm pit has saved us from multiple tornados and is so safe that was such a great way to build it he did an absolutely amazing job

I'ts uncanny to see what looks like a piece of paper descending from the sky only to see it develop into a 4 by eight foot section of broken vinyl siding still attached in rows that lands within feet of you. Tornadoes are deadly powerful.

that few inches of rain gives me one concern...the possibility of that becoming a drowning-pit if it needed to be used during a heavy rain situation...flash floods here in central TX with only 1.5-2 inches of fast rain. Any drainage or bilge-pump style solution recommended?

should have a one way valve for the air intake with a pressure regulator for discharging old air out. Tornado will suck all the air out of a room.

Back in the day, before basements were the standard, many rural families had a separate “root cellar” that offered shelter from violent weather. Think of the storm cellar in the Wizard of Oz movie.

I wouldnt really consider this one a bunker, it doesn't have much in the way of long term living, if anything it seems like a fancy cellar that you can hide in during a tornado or other storm. Im sure you could use it as a bunker or modify it to be one, just it wouldn't be too effective as is
