Takamine CP3NYK review

A full review of my personal CP3NYK, owned and played for eleven months at time of filming.
This compact parlour or New Yorker sized guitar is one of three very similar models in Takamine's lineup as of March 2017. With it's 45mm nut and 12th fret neck joint I feel it's a great all-rounder, although it lacks ultimate volume and bass response for unplugged situations. Once plugged in though, those issues disappear!

Superb review! Honest truth - such details, accurate and very informative yet not boring. Good coverage and playing too. Please do more reviews. I'm going out to get the Takamine CP3NYK :)

I've said it be for and I'm more than happy to repeat it: your reviews are delicate and very thorough. You tend to go n the depth in a way very few does. Thnx a lot for that. Additionally it seems to me that you have me (us) "foreigners" in mind when you're talking a bit slowly with a good diction. As for a bonus for me I expect to have my Takamine p3 NY in a week or so. Looking forward to that.

Thanks for that review. Fantastic detail and helped me make my mind up. I was originally looking for a GS mini but after playing both, and getting a great deal on a new one of these it really was a no brainer. Yes, I spent more money but I definitely got value for it. Incredible sounds and I'd recommend anyone to find one of these in the flesh and try it. You won't be able to put it down! The guy in my local shop had to wrestle it out of my hands just to get it in the (excellent, and not covered in the review) hard case. Another thing you don't get with the Taylor.

You're welcome Chris, really glad the video was helpful. I would not really put these two guitars in the same category due to the differences in price but yeah you sure get what you pay for with the Tak. Welcome to the family!

Yes, I agree they're not really competitors, there's a fairly big price difference. I guess what I'm saying is that the jump in quality is much bigger than the price difference though.

You're welcome, thanks very much for watching. Strings are D'Addario EXP16 light gauge coated, the same as come stock on the guitar. The strings on the guitar when I did the review were quite well played in. The more I play this guitar the most I like it, especially the plugged in sound which is so well-balanced, big and warm for such a small guitar!

@@GLBProductions it went great! Liked them both but I have to give the edge to the P7NC. I wasn't sure if I would like the cool tube but in the hard surface venue we were at it did sound a little warmer than the cp3nyk, that that may be more the guitar than the preamp. The Cp3nyk did sound awesome on the Jethro Tull stuff though, very punchy! I may just have to bring 2 guitars from now on!😄

Thank you so much for your takamine reviews! My first takamine was an ean15c and it is still one of my best sounding. 7 years ago I got a gn93ce because the ean15c was getting dinged up too much and the dread body was getting too uncomfortable for 3 hour gigs. I really like the next body style and recently fell into some spare cash so I got my first all solid flagship guitar, a p7nc. I've still yet to gigs with it but it does sound wonderful through my bone so pro. I'm now looking at a new Yorker, just because I've never owned a parlor guitar (and I have always love Ian Andersons guitar sound). Your review was extremely helpful and in many ways I also prefer the ct4b preamp to the cool tube 2 in my p7nc. I've been looking for a used one of the 3 you talk about in your video. Takamine should have you instead of brad davis as their pitchman!

You're welcome Mike! Thanks very much for watching. The P7NC is a real Rolls Royce of a guitar, should last you decades. I believe Brad Davis is no longer endorsing Takamine, but he was certainly quite the virtuoso player 😊 Happy New Year!

Do you still have your TSF48C? I’m trying to decide between TSF48, P5NC, and TSF40C. I know the 40C is very different. I’m curious to how you like the TSF48 now and how you compare it to P5NC. Thanks again

  • @GLBProductions

    @GLBProductions

Yes I still have it - it's a great all-around workhorse guitar. On the three guitars above: you need to decide if you prefer spruce/rosewood or cedar/mahogany. These are both classic acoustic guitar wood combinations and sound quite different. Once you've decided that the choice between the TSF48c and P5NC comes down to aesthetics and whether you prefer a pinned or pinless bridge. Other than that they are basically the same.

You should try half-pickup, half-microphone sound. It usually delivers best of both worlds.

It's definitely a good option to have, although many purists will argue that pickups have no place in recording and with live sound it is often impractical to use a microphone.

I love this range of guitar, Ive just managed to purchase the CP400NYK, it has everything I want in a guitar, small bodied, 12 fret, slotted headstock and 42.5mm nut. 42.5mm nut with a slotted headstock and 12 frets are nigh on impossible to find. If I had to find a negative it would be the use of ivoroid for the binding, I would rather have paid more and had something like maple.

Hi Bruno what's your general impression about the Takamine EF740FS TT? is it a parlor guitar like this CP3NYK? How do Takamine high-end Guitars like the EF740 compare with the other high-end Japanese guitars like Yairi Alvarez?

  • @GLBProductions

Hi Dylan, I have a full review on the EF740FS TT, on which you have previously commented 😉 In my opinion the 740FS is not really a parlor guitar, it's an OM with an unusually deep body. The only only high end Japanese guitar brand that I have played is Headway - I would say their value for money is about the same as Takamine.
