China doesn’t need aircraft carriers to invade Taiwan. It is comfortably within missiles range. The more likely battlefield would be Philippines that is further away and poses less threat in the event of retaliation. Many believe that US is irking to engage in a proxy war (but not a direct confrontation) with China. The outcome of a direct war could be fatal and there’s no clear winners. Philippines is more preferable for China not only because of its proximity to the mainland, but it also doesn’t have to be concerned about post war rebuilding. To a certain extent, China is also calling US bluff as it would have to protect Philippines with its own troops, being a partner in a mutual defence treaty. China is betting on the US public not wanting to support a replay of the Vietnam war.
