Thanks, I did briefly try to look for ones online. I haven't come across a sparring version, only ones made of plastic or thin wood, and ones made of steel, I'm thinking it's best not to spar with ones made of steel, even if they are non sharpened... :D I may purchase another similar fan and eventually do a sparring video with it again even if it breaks, but probably not right away... got other things to try :) I do feel like solo training with it a bit more, if I do get one, now that I've done some of the techniques in a combative context :)

Whenever I look up demonstrations of people sparring with fans, I either only find solo forms or pre-constructed demos with no actual combat or contact. Both of which are true art forms and martial arts of their own, but I rarely see the fans used like this in a non-staged fight. This is exactly what I've been looking for. The way that he implemented the fan in his form and even took note of how it could be used as a distraction was genius and very impressive!

Thanks Mark:) I've trained with the fan before, but never used it in sparring (or seen anyone else do so, for that matter), so it was a great experience testing it and being able to apply many of my techniques in a dynamic combative context. The one thing I think I could have done better, would be to lead more with the hand holding the fan, not that you should always do that, but for the most part I think it would be advantageous for blocking and having further reach. I always felt the fan was most practical closed, but the opened fan also has some advantages, including a greater surface to hit with and obscuring the opponent's vision is a unique advantage with the weapon. :)

Very neat. You're most definitely a more accomplished martial artist, but I think your tessen usage needs a bit of work. For instance, the tessen you're using is too small to be made effective the way you're doing it. It's about distraction and speed which means you want to dual wield with one that size. The flash of one tessen can distract from the other's strike. There are larger tessens (and some I wouldn't call tessens but are large enough to be called two handed. While they can be used one handed, they're nothing more than glorified clubs/shields/ and wide arced slashing weapons when fanned out.) I also noticed the outer rib broke real easy on that. It must not have been well made. I sparred with bamboo fans and the joint HOLDING the ribs break before the ribs do. Besides that, there are a few different techniques I did not see employed here, but that's to be expected if this was just your trial with the weapon. When free form sparring many years ago outside of dojos, I used to get laughed at for bringing those. However, one thing that's EASY to improve your use? How to POP it. With the quality of the ones you have I doubt it'd have the same effect, but a well made one that would cost you $50-100 will make a loud as hell crack as you pop it open which caught a lot of people off guard without even hitting them. It's like the crack of a whip. Also learning 'crack' patterns with the fan is another deception because they're trying to figure out which fan it is and is the one being used to attack next. The next thing is what most call fan dancing. You do a lot of straight forward strikes. This is probably only because you are using one fan, but a lot of side slashing motions in different directions is done in this if you're going on the offensive (which... these are defensive weapons mind you) alternating in angles which with the wide arc of the fans is also very distracting The last thing is the 'whip fan'. I don't know what you'd call it but this is the closest example of what it looks like. You can grab the edge of one of the ribs, whip it out and do that loud crack noise, but you're doing it at the end of the rib instead of where the joints are. Those look to be 1' fans so doing this gets you about 2' reach. The other benefit is that with the way the other rib whips out it really hits them hard. Now switching from the standard hold into this is difficult, but a lot of those I sparred with had no idea this could be done, or if they thought it was possible, underestimated both how loud the pop was and how hard the strike is. I know the fans are not 'effective fighting weapons' but I always like seeing people still give them a try :3

Thanks for sharing those tips :) Yeah, I agree. Learn the most practical stuff for combat, but test everything in combat. That's how to get the best understanding I think (of course taolu/kata and drills also have value in training). :)

@@medusa3012 I lack the ability or space to record and practice this again. I may be moving to a much bigger place in a few months and I'd be glad to do it again! But, most of these techniques are pretty easily viewed by other tessen users, though they tend to focus way more on the clubbed aspect or smacking or thrusting with it. if you've a tessen (not just a handfan) try just opening the fan up as fast as you can. Eventually you'll see how your wrist flicking with it will make it open faster enough to hear it pop. The trick then is to practice making it pop when you thrust a rib, or swing the rib at someone. It's just two simple techniques just now adding that loud pop. After you get the popping done, learn how to make the fan fold quicker. This is very similar to the idea of most martial art weapons of how to make them switch their own attack forms, or how sword users practice sheathing and unsheathing. The other unfortunate thing... tessens take a lot of maintenance. Oiling the fabric, fixing the joint, making sure the fabric is firmly attached appropriately onto the right ribs. You'll get in the habit of doing this after a few matches where things like swords only need sharpening rarely and blunt weapons...well generally need very little maintenance. Another thing that can help, look up Kali stick techniques. This is the bulk of what you do with the tessen folded, you just can add popping to a few of the strikes. Never underestimate a loud boom's ability to distract anyone.

@@medusa3012 let's see if this works. kzread.info/dash/bejne/nZuE0ah-eLq8ddI.html So, I figured, while this is a demonstration, you can probably gather some useful things from this in terms of how it's used in actual combat. You can see the many different ways she pops open a fan (though she doesn't do it to make it loud) and then with one unfolded uses it to hide the strikes of the other, or how folded she thrusts/swings with them. These may look just flashy, but take what you can of actual application. remember, the distraction is really the only thing the fans have over other short melee weapons for offense, so you practice doing those. Otherwise, you're just mimicing clubs. but no, you don't generally throw the fans to switch hands as she does in some. That's just for show. You can throw the fans in someone's face though and then go at them with the other fan. Or thrust a fanned out blade upward to give the illusion you are throwing it, even though you're not.

Another fun video to watch! While the iron fan isn't as deadly as a more optimised weapon like a sword or dagger it can still be used quite effectively in self defence, especially against an unarmed opponent. I seem to remember hearing that it was sometimes carried for self defence in Japan when it wasn't appropriate to carry a sword but you still wanted something to protect you if things went down. I can also imagine it might work well as a parrying weapon alongside a sword.

  • @ZenDragonYoutubeChannel

Yeah, I believe in Japan it's called a tessel. In China during a period where it was illegal to cary weapons, the fan became used as an improvised weapon. Due to the climate in some parts of China, the fan was quite common, and just like a pen, a bottle, or a pair of keys, it makes for a useful self defense weapon. Eventually fans were designed particularly for fighting, with the sharp metal at the ends, which made them more durable and not just for blocking, striking and hooking, but cutting as well. This mirrors modern day, where you can buy tactical pens and flashlights designed for blunt force which hit harder and are more durable... still a regular pen or flashlight can work well as an improvised weapon, if you don't have the concealed actual weapon of a tactical flashlight... or a war far/fighting fan/iron fan/steel fan/taji fan/kung fu fan/tessel/whatever you wanna call it :)

Yeah, I realised that at some point, and it was an interesting parallel. That's a good way to measure progress I think. Don't get sucked into comparisons with others, you'll always be able to find someone better, and as soon as you've picked up just a few skills, you'll be able to find someone with less skill... but I think neither focus is constructive. Compete with yourself, even when sparring opponents or whatever it might be, it's a journey of self improvement and the true enemy is one's ego, so just enjoy the process and look back after a while and notice the improvements you've made:)

In my mind I was doing it as a distraction to set up that jumping kick, but when he fell down like he realistically would if it was sharp, that made for a cool ending. Recorded lots of sparring today... 3 fights with me, and one between the two opponents I faced today (same from the Muay Thai and Karate sparring video), I liked all the matches for different, but the Kung Fu vs Muay Thai part 2 was probably the most intense. It's a good thing none of us got seriously hurt... we recorded inside a ring and that definitely suited the muay thai style more I felt, can't wait to share that one. :)

I did one time have the chance to spar against someone using a chain whip, or meteor hammer rather, which was made more or less like that, but honestly I chickened out. It was when I met up with the Vesuvian Sheeps (if you search "Zen Dragon Napoli" you'll find the video sharing my adventure meeting up with them) I'd done lots of weapon sparring that day, and I'd just healed from an eye poke injury from sparring vs capoeira earlier that week... I felt I'd tested my luck enough (already had scratches from sparring with pudao vs trident). If you search for The Vesuvian Sheeps chain whip, you'll find, probably the only online footage of someone sparring full contact with a meteorhammer!

The key to making something work, is to learn the techniques and then test them in sparring. Some techniques are simpler and easier to use under pressure, but any legitimate martial art based on principles of the human anatomy will work, it's just a matter of trianing properly to make it work and sparring is key.

He is, but two factors played a part in him not landing much. He did land a couple of sidekicks, but for the most part he was out of range. 1: My increased range due to the weapon. 2: The unfamiliarity with the situation. He's never sparred with such a weapon (neither had I, I'd practised with the fan before, but never in a dynamic combative context)... also he got cut a bit, this wasn't a war fan designed to cut, that would have been way too dangerous, but still when the fan broke it had some sharp pieces of plastic, you can't tell that well in the video, but he shows a few cuts on his hands and fingers.

  • @Psiberzerker
    @Psiberzerker5 жыл бұрын

It's very useful for Mestubushi, as well. This is more of a Japanese application of the same weapon, but the "Cuts" you demonstrate forward in your Kata video, can be used to unfurl it right in someone's face, 1:20 So, they raise their guard, and can't see what you do with the other hand. (I usually follow-up with a palm uppercut to the chin, so I can go low for a sweep. If they can't look down, they can't see you to counter, and it also exposes the throat to a spine furl. Whack them with the back edge, so it folds up, and all those spines impact their throat, which is not particularly good for their breathing.) I've also put on a burlesque show, with glitter folded into the fan so it bursts out, and I can fan it in the air. Usually leaning back for the overhand flares, which pop them up over me, for a really flashy effect in stage lights. Folded, it's basically just a Kubaton for pressure points, and blocking.

Not sure what happened to Sean Knot's comment about wrestlers grabbing the weapon, but here's my response. "If they snatch the weapon, the fight procedes from there. Had it been a lethal warfan designed for self defense, the wrestler might or might not have been cut closing the distance, if not the fight would have proceded. Like any weapon, including improvised ones such as a pen, a set of keys, or whatever it might be, it's just a tool. When the fan is closed, it's similar to a club. At very close range the icepick grip with the fan closed would work the best, but if you have to let go of it, you let go. I fully respect wrestling, wrestlers train very hard and are difficult to deal with... but that doesn't mean this is useless. :) Anyways, I'm happy for you that you've trained martial arts for such a long time :)"

Thanks, good points. It can be used as a concealed weapon, and be pulled out in combat. In this context the opponent knew I had the fan. It's not an obvious weapon either, so there's a bigger chance someone would attack a person that's using a fan to keep cool, rather than attack someone standing with a sword in hand. I've always felt that the fan was most practical when not fanned out. This was my first experience using it in sparring, and I wanted to test both ways of using it, as both are done a lot in forms and such, and I was actually surprised how well it worked when fanned out. It's less durable, even if it was a steel fan, but eventhough it broke a bit, that didn't stop it from being useful and this was a cheap plastic version... a steel fan would have lasted much better. It's good to be mindful that in addition to using it open and closed, both ends can be used like you said, I did flip it at one point at one point flip it (at 4:36, may have done it once or twice more as well)... I would have loved to get to use it's hooking capabilities as well, but it didn' happen, however openeing it up to obscure the opponent's vision worked quite well, I did it more than once and it kept working as an element of distraction, obviously it works best the first time and in a fight with lethal intentions, if you do it get to use that tactic it's probably just once... self defense situations tend not to last as long as sparring or even combat sport fights.

@@StayCoolAsh Exactly, honestly I've trained with the fan a bit prior to these 2 sparring videos, learned some principles from my sifu but no extensive training with it, but the 2 times I've sparred with it for videos have been the only times I've tried sparring with it... and not only that, it's the only recordings I've come across of anyone ever sparring with the fan. I do believe this is the only footage you'll find online. So I'm very happy to have provided some footage and recordings of techniques working and what it can look like... maybe I'll record a third fan sparring video at some point this year if I get the chance. I think the reason why I was able to pull off a lot of the stuff, especially in this one where my opponent's fighting style left me more space, was not so much that I'm high level with the fan, but rather that I've sparred with tons of different weapons (there's a playlist full of sparring with all kinds of Kung Fu & Karate weapons this channel) as well as many different types of empty handed sparring, so I'm good at adapting and applying the stuff I learn in a combative context, for the most part at least.

Yup. When it's closed it works like a club/stick, when opened if it's one designed as a weapon, it'll have sharp points at the end and be able to cut when opened. In this case it was neither designed for combat nor sparring, it was just a cheap one for taolu practise and such. He did get cut a few times though as it broke off it's plastic was sharp in some parts, but it wasn't deadly like one designed for combat. A fan not designed for fighting can still be used as an improvised weapon, as can even a rolled togeter newspaper, but once people started using their fans to fight there were designed sharpened ones which made for a truly deadly weapon.

I have also practised with the fan without using it in sparring, but there's nothing wrong with testing the techniques in sparring, I think that's exactly what there's needed more of with traditional martial arts. Even if it's light contact, it teaches you something. In this one the fan proke, he landed a solid sidekick to my midsection and he got some cuts from the broken fan... had it been a sharpened steel one, it probably would have lasted longer, but he wouldn't, as it would have sliced his throat when I threw it at him.

I was lucky to train Kung Fu at a place with empty handed sparring (although not full MMA rules, I was able to spar after class with guys who'd practised various other things before joining the club) eventually i started training Krav Maga and MMA, and I pressure test everything from weapons like this to animal styles, to more MMA like sparring with Kung Fu kicks, etc. I was surprised at how effectve it proved to use the fan as a distraction, and I do agree that it's more of an extra tool to incorporate with your empty handed skills unlike a knife where you can do well just knowing how to use a knife, but I will also note that for safety purposes, there's stuff that's efficient with the knife (close range strikes with the fan closed, like a short stick or kubotan even), that just can't be done to the face or throat etc without really messing up the opponent... Not sure if you watched that video I linked yet, but we ended up on the ground several times, where I was able to use my BJJ skills, but the first time he got a hold of the fan but had to hold back in terms of striking with it in close range on the ground.

  • @ZenDragonYoutubeChannel

This was someone outside of "my own", I met the guy a while back at a JKD session. He's trained Karate for a long time and now trains JKD, I've trained Kung Fu for close to 10 years and now train Krav Maga (simply because I can't attend classes in both, and have lots of experience from Kung Fu and want to train something more self defense focused). The point isn't to constantly walk around fighting with a fan, I've practised a handful of techniques with it before in taolu and non resisting applications, and I believe in testing everything in some form of sparring, be it light contact, medium, hard, multiple opponents whatever. This was mostly to open people's minds, not to say that a fan would last forever... a lot of this is fancy Kung Fu, which I'm happy I was able to pull off in sparring, but for a practical self defense context, if that's your perspective, most of this is too complicated... still there are certain takeaways, using an object to distract the opponent's vision can work, if you get attacked with a jacket or something else in your hand... a tactic depending on the circumstances could be to swing the jacket and then throw it on the attacker to temporarily block the vision, as you go in for a knee strike to the groin... for instance. Also when the fan is closed, it can be used like a club, which can be done with even a magazine or something, but preferably a thick stick or iron bar... you don't have to be fancy and do spinning backfists with it, like I did with the closed fan... just like you don't have to jump off the side of the cage and do a showtime kick like Anothony Pettis... fancy techniques CAN work, but they're not reliable enough or the tactically best options for self defense. If you watch my 2 vs 1 Self Defense sparring, my approach is very different.

I think he did punch at some point, the fan did break as it was not designed for sparring (such aren't available anywhere that I can find, I think because very few have actually tested their fan techniques in sparring like this, so there's yet to be a market for it), but it continued to be of use, had it broken completely I would have simply continued empty handed. He didn't do a lot of punching, I think a part of the reason was that he was getting cut when I struck with the fan as it's plastic was broken and somewhat sharp... it had been sharper of course if it had been a sharpened steel fan, like the ones historically used for self defense.
