Just to give you guys the characters: 谷 That’s master gǔ‘s surname. 谷师傅, as you would say in Chinese. Master Gu actually did come out with a reflection on his performance, so I will translate it soon. Also, for those of you wondering why Xu didn’t take on the Master himself, Xu needs surgery to fix one of his arms, so Xu cannot really exert too much force right now. In fact, I forgot to translate this, but part of the reason Xu was able to get the Master to show up was he put up some money. He basically told Master Gu: if you can beat a student of mine, you get 100,000 RMB of money. So Xu basically put up the money he was saving for his arm surgery to get the Master to show up. Also, I have a followup video coming soon. The more I look at both Master Gu's social media, the more I see fascinating content to explain and analyze. Stay tuned!

I think there is a lot of confirmation bias in how people see events like this, but watch again, the Tai Chi guy is dizzy from early on, has lost his balance, the thing tai chi guy should excel at.

I use it with common sense. Every martial art has there strength and weakness. That is why we must mix styles together and create our own mma. People mistake mma as specific style but in reality it is a idea of multiple styles, that is why Bruce Lee’s philosophy Jeet Kune do is the father of MMA because it was the first idea of mixing styles

About football players I do think they can make decent fighters though. I played rugby only a couple of trainings and that gave me an edge against my non fighting trained friends. Jon jones even said that he’s lucky his football pro brother never joined the ufc or it would have been over for him. I’m Not saying there aren’t football players that overestimate their abilities but they have potential imo. There’s a lot of people who overestimate themselves. Have seen footage of soldiers poorly fighting civilians on the street in their day off. False confidence is everywhere. On the other hand potential is everywhere as well. Have seen footage of cricket players fighting really well on the streets in self defense.

It has nothing to do with fighting - it doesnt matter how good his ‘form’ is… the body mechanics are fundamentally flawed and will always end up losing to any conventional western fighting style… boxing and wrestling are true MA, everything else was MA fantasy with no context - For reference the boxer wasnt very good either… he was squared up 80% of the time, bad footwork, fell over himself and smothered his work - but the tai chi guy is so helpless… ive trained 12 year olds who could probably smoke this guy, honestly ive trained 15 year olds that will take out any guy trying to do tai chi - even with the correct ‘form’ - absolutely smashed.

A person who’s never been punched in the face before are usually in shock mode, and are either in fight or flight response, or don’t have the mental strength to continue. And this is from a jab. If someone was rocked from a punch, forget it. It’s 100% mental and emotional after that. The feeling is you don’t know if you’re gonna survive or not. In reality, people do. It’s just the mental challenge of feeling your brain vibrating is scary.

So i grew up on knowing martial arts as early as i can walk. So, when I first joined my teachers school, i knew how to fight and they were shocked because i was in there sparring them on the first day. But, looking like this older guy, you can see he never had a real fight in his life and he's only going on the notion that tai chi works, theoretically. but you can see, this guy has no guard, doesn't know how to move around, not dodging or evading. if you're going to take your martial art into the fighting realms, one, you need to know how to fight first. two, make sure your basic punches, blocks and kicks are up to par. three, SPAR. Spar light, spar heavy, and spar often. This is why i make my own students do and is the reason why we did well on our very first ever match in the Muay Thai community.

In this case I would say that this boxer could easily avoid that long guard with upper body movement while striking to the body and above in combinations that long guard should be of no consequence / oh and tyson did win the fight mentioned / Credit to anyone with training who is willing to professionally test their skills not every master is great just like not every fighter is great, and even that said sometimes luck is a factor aka murphy's law in this video case the boxer out matched the tai chi guy // Tyson vs Paul IF there are no behind the scenes agreements tyson could ko paul in round 1 if he's not running fast enough!! this was great! My teaching in Shanghai was always interested in how modern fighting and bagua or tai chi would do against each other. I think what has been lost is the practical application of these arts. they have turned it into a dance and have forgotten how to apply the pieces in a fight, and have lost timing all together. I hope more masters explore this. relearn it. this master was brave and dedicated to getting in there and explore and be willing to find out what he doesn't know, what doesn't work. now go back and rethink it. play with it, adjust, and try again.

People are clowning but guys...This Tai Chi master showed great compassion and restraint by not using his internal Chi powers which would have permanently injured or even killed his young less wise opponent. It was clear from the beginning that the master realized that an exhibition fight, clearly for no reason other than ego gratification, was not a place to truly unleash his power on a defenseless and foolish young man. Instead he wisely and bravely chose to take a beating himself rather than cause irreparable harm to a weaker man. He also knows that if western people ever saw the true power of internal MA that they would begin demanding to be taught these dangerous techniques and that well, we in the west just aren't ready for it. Better to let them mock what they aren't ready to understand than to unleash a bunch of barbarians trained in the art of chi on an already suffering world.

Excellent analysis, you also have to watch out for the masters that have “big bellies” that’s where they store their chi

A Tai Chi master is supposed to be wise for letting someone beat him up? Not very wise or compassionate to himself. The wisest thing would have been to not let rip on the internet with ego driven claims about being able to beat other people. Then you don’t get in an escalating situation where you might have to use your Chi death ray.and take someone’s life. Shaolin monks trained to defend life , not egos.
