Tahoe Power Generator Bad Gas (TPI9000LXU TI9000LXU)

The gas in this Tahoe Power generator has gone bad and clogged up the fuel system and rusted up the fuel tank. I cleaned it up and got it running again.

It's funny that you mentioned the Duramax. I had a customer drop two of them off doing the exact same thing. He claims that they both will not start. These things are still very new and should not be in the shop already. The Duramax tries to start three times before it cancels itself out. I'll let you know what I find out. Your attention to detail and they way that you test them out (even in the winter months) are really appreciated.

Hey James, I really enjoy all your videos and your narration is outstanding! On several, I see the steel fuel tanks have one thing in common, they rust! Obviously, this is an ongoing problem so I'm sort of surprised manufactures continue to use them instead of plastic. Keep up the great work and looking forward to more of your excellent videos!

I agree. The only bas thing about plastic is that the bushing fails after about 10 years and start leaking gas out. Hopefully while not running. Steel tanks are fine as long as the fuel does not go bad.

Hey James, enjoy your videos. This one brought back memories. I used to work for a company that imported these generators from China. I was the only service tech/mechanic there. I know for certain that the gen you have there was relabeled by the distributor after it was bought from the importer. We sold thousands of these. I was able to purchase a few of these gens every time the company changed names. I have been able to keep mine in working condition because of the experience I have with them but mostly if users watch vids like yours they should be able to repair and maintain their equipment.

The engine as a 420cc Honda clone. The solenoid is an "anti-backfire" solenoid, when the engine is switched off for any reason (user switch, low oil pressure...) it drops power to the solenoid which shuts fuel off to the main jet.

  • @MickWootton

    @MickWootton

    4 жыл бұрын

I think the anti backfire solenoid circuit is only closed when ignition is off. That is when igition is switched on, no pwer to solenoid, therefore it is retracted, which means fuel can get to main jet. Which means you can start it because the plunger is retracted, not blocking fuel to main jet. So , when engine is running, ignition on, no power to solenoid coil, engine can keep running. Now when you shut the engine off, the solenoid circuit is energised, and will extend the plunger, shutting fuel off to main jet until the voltage winds down as engine slows and stops, at which point no voltage produced, and plunger retracts, unblocking the fuel, ready for the next start.

How do you think mine works? Lookin forward to the insight!

⚠️Generator safety tips: All generator safety rules need to be followed carefully whenever you use your portable generator. This is a reminder. 1) KEEPING OTHERS SAFE: Please do not allow an unqualified person or your children to operate and service the portable generator. Just because some manuals don’t say that doesn’t mean it’s safe. That is important against the generator safety rules. We also need to be keeping an eye on our children too. You need to make sure that your children are not playing near the portable generator especially when it’s running so they won’t get electrocuted. Generators pose electrical risks and they can be hot during an operation. Please keep your children away from the portable generator at all times. It is important to keep our children safe especially our little ones. Be aware of all the hazards. 2) WHERE TO RUN YOUR GENERATOR: Some people use their portable generators indoors which increases the risk of carbon monoxide poisoning. It’s important to have a carbon monoxide if you have a gas generator. Never ever use your generator indoors even if your doors and windows are open and even in the garage is not safe to use a portable generator. Not even at your porch and your deck. It is never safe to use your generator indoors and in enclosed areas of your home. Your generator needs to be 15-20 feet away from your house. 3)🔥FIRE HAZARDS: Never refuel your generator while it’s running. You need to let your generator cool off before refueling it and before storing your generator. Never overload your generator too. Never ever back feed your generator. You should never plug your generator into a wall outlet. Also never store propane tanks indoors. Please keep flammable things away from the generator as well and please don’t smoke cigarettes near the generator. Having a fire extinguisher next to the generator is also important against the generator safety rules. 4) GENERATOR OPERATION: make sure your hands are dry before touching the generator. Never use your generator in wet conditions. Don’t let your generator get wet. You need a generator tent if you need to use your generator during wet weather. Please don’t wear loose clothes when operating the generator. Turn on your generator before plugging in appliances. Use the right cord for your generator. Please do not use worn out cords. kzread.info/dash/bejne/e2WetpV6fqi0pqw.html and here is a video more about keeping others safe when using generators Hope this helps

Tahoe was a brand that was sold by fly by night salesmen. They would stop you and say that they had a big order cancel on them. Most of the time they stopped at your house and sold it and unloaded it at your house. It would come with a gas compressor, generator, water trash pump and pressure washer. They would sell it to you for as much as they could maybe 2000.00 or more saying it was worth 4000.00. It would work for a bit and then break. I’ve worked on some of these and it’s made poorly.

Your video are amazing, I inherited a 2500i generator that would not start and I was scared to tear into it until I watched your videos. I’ve watched I guess 30 or so so far. Anyway I took my first carburetor out and cleaned it and bam after installing it the generator started. Now I have a problem tho it seems to be idling way to high and it started on choke but now only starts on run. Can you give me some ideas on what to look for. Thanks

The throttle plate on inverter generators are computer controlled. Is the generator making power? If not, then the inverter module is bad at it might not be able to control the throttle. If you have power, then double check the wires to the servo are plugged in and that the throttle plate can move (try moving it manually). Also make sure the servo shaft is correctly inserted into the throttle plate. There is also normally a spring that sometimes gets lost or installed incorrectly. Here is a like to a short video I made for someone about that. kzread.info/dash/bejne/mp2es7iSebafpJs.html As far as starting on choke or run, would not worry about that as long as the engine sounds like its running well.

  • @jcondon1

Also check the idle set screw. If driven all the way in, then the generator will run fast. Back it almost all the way out so that the throttle plate can close all the way. That screw is not needed to control the idle and will just cause problems if in too far.

@@jcondon1 thanks a million, when I took the carburetor off and was turning it upside down to remove the bowl I noticed a small spring on my work bench had no idea where it came from. I thought it was just there from something else I think I saved it tho (packrat) not sure tho. But I’m definitely going to check. This generator is a craftsman’s 2500i I believe a clone to generac anyway your videos are great and gave the courage to try getting into it. It was free so I couldn’t lose either way. It does make power and will only start on run but maybe this will make the difference. Thanks for what you do. Phillip

I may be wrong but don't the fuel solenoids default to "fuel on", and they only close the fuel for a few seconds during shutdown, no? In other words, there's a circuit to send 12v to the solenoid when the switch is turned to off, but before the generator has coasted down enough to lose 12v. So in that way starting shouldn't be an issue.

joseph puchel this one ran pretty well. The remote start was nice. This is a common Chinese generator configuration. It is rebranded by duromax, champion, generac, powerstroke and a few others. Tahoe has been out of business for a while. Personally I would go with the Ryobi. It is the best price and the same engine plus parts are available (although I do not like their easy start system). Second would be duromax. Generac is overpriced for what it is. Have not worked on to many powerstroke or champions.

Hey I thought a not to older unit might be better. I see several other brand/ models like either barely used or left over stock up for sale. Maybe being older they might have better components. • @jcondon1

joseph puchel it depends. The Chinese ones are sometimes hard to get parts for. The 24 year old generac 10000exl I fixed is one of the best built ones I have worked on, but parts are an issue because of the age. I really like the Briggs and Stratton storm responders because they are cheap in my area and engine parts are easy to come by and they are a simple design. Also I like plastic tanks since rust always becomes an issue with the metal ones. With that said most Briggs do not have oil sensors and people tend to run them out of oil. Some storm responders have AVRs and other do not. In theory the AVR provides more steady power, but it is just something else to go wrong. I like almost anything with a Subaru, Briggs or Honda engine because parts are not an issue (at least in the engine side). For the power head it does not matter because even if those parts are available, the cost is more then just buying a new generator.

The fuel filter on these are inside the tank at the fuel outlet. Probably would not hurt to double filter if you wanted, but would not recommend it. The fuel flow is slow through the narrow fuel line used on this setup. Would be concerned flow would be further reduced with a second filter.

Seeing your unit with writing tattoos all over it if not glaring billboard like signs I don't mind. I JUST DONT like my women with black writing all over their white skin, that is really tacky. All a matter of taste. The fact your generator had solonoids and other controls means I would rather it be plain---like a battery charger not to be smart, but have a big wire coil to reduce the voltage and a diode to make dc after the winding and you can't find one except to go to an old second hand store and maybe put a silicon diode in it to replace the stinky failing selenium rectifier.
